June 8, 2009 Speed sensors could be a factor in Air France crashPosted: 07:55 AM ET
From Political Correspondent Richard Lui and Writer Lauren As investigators work to unravel the cause of the Air France flight 447 crash, they've identified the plane's speed sensors as a potential cause of the fatal malfunction. Investigators in Paris say Air France didn't replace a part that monitors the plane's speed after the plane's manufacturer, Airbus, recommended the replacement. Airbus tells CNN that replacing the part was not mandatory to flight safety, but airbus now replacing speed sensors on all of its bigger planes. So, how might damaged speed sensors have affected the plane? Industry officials told the Wall Street Journal that damaged speed sensors shouldn't have cause the plane to crash because modern planes have backup systems to monitor speed. However, the Air France plane sent 24 automated error messages, lasting about four minutes. Officials say those messages suggest that the plane may have been flying either too fast or too slow through severe thunderstorms, before it crashed. Stay tuned to Morning Express, and we'll have more details for you on Air France flight 447 as they emerge. President Obama will announce tough new fuel standards today, and they may end up costing you more money. According to administration officials, Obama's proposed changes, along with the cost of already enacted fuel economy standards, will add about $1,300 to the cost of a vehicle by the year 2016. However, the fuel efficiency regulations could make up for the cost in the money you'll save on gas. Writer Lauren was kind enough to do the math for us. - 10,0000 miles per year divided by 27.5 miles per gallon = 363.6 - Multiply that times today's average cost for gallon of gas: $2.31 x 363.6 = $840 - 10,0000 miles per year divided by new standard of 39 gallons = 256 - Multiply that times today's cost for a gallon of gas: $2.31 x 256 = $592 Under Obama's plan, in a passenger car that gets 39 miles per gallon, you'd get a 30% savings on the cost of gas for your car. Is it worth it to you to spend a bit more on the initial cost of the car if you cut back on gas costs over time? Let us know what you think in the comments field below! Writer Lauren We’re in the home stretch of the presidential election – and about 7 % of you are undecided (that’s according to CNN’s new average of polls.) We want to hear from you! Why are you undecided, so late in the game? What do you need to hear from the candidates, to make your final decision? And, if you’ve already made up your mind, what is the one issue that sealed the deal for you? Join our conversation now: We might read your blog comment on TV this morning!! Posted by: Writer Lauren July 23, 2008 “Black in America”: A CNN Special ReportPosted: 01:57 PM ET
Writer Lauren When I was 19, my biggest problem was acne. Oh, and choosing which beach to go to, while I skipped college classes. Rough life, I know. Don’t weep too hard. So, I teared up this morning as this gorgeous woman named Marvelyn Brown recalled her terrifying discovery at age 19. She found out she was HIV positive. Her story shook me to the core, because it could so easily be me, or you. When I was 19, I didn’t think anything could really hurt me. Death was for old, wrinkled people, not me. Then life shakes you up, and you realize that daggers are everywhere. Marvelyn’s story is part of CNN’s new documentary “Black in America.” I watched huge chunks of it, as I prepared for host Soledad O’Brien’s live interview, part of the coverage on our show today. “Black in America” isn’t just for black people. It examines the triumphs and challenges that black people experience – and that we as a nation face – when it comes to race. So, what does your skin color mean? Does it help you or hinder you? What does it mean to be black in America? Or white in America? Or Latino? Does your skin color really define who you are? Maybe our faces are just masks – that others judge us by. I am a Southern girl who spent big chunks of time on the West Coast – and I attended more schools than you have fingers. I’ve been to mostly-white schools – and mostly-black schools. Private schools and public schools. I wore a different mask at every one. We all wear masks to get along, sometimes. So, I invite you to tune into CNN Wednesday and Thursday, for a special two-part series of “Black in America.” Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, Soledad O’Brien investigates the experiences of black women and families, the staggering statistics of single parenthood, and the devastating toll of HIV & AIDS on the black community. You’ll get a chance to see the heartbreaking story of Marvelyn Brown, one that moved me so much. Then Thursday at 9 p.m. ET, in part two of the series, Soledad O’Brien looks at what it’s like for black men, living in America. Watch the special report, then share your thoughts. Is race an important part of your life? How close are we to stopping racism in America? Posted by: Writer Lauren |
