February 28, 2011 Tornado watches in effect from Tennessee to PennsylvaniaPosted: 07:02 AM ET
Here we go with the spring-like storms transitioning into winter-type weather. There is a strong cold front chugging through the MW right now, with tornado watches from TN to PA. The low-level jet stream, higher dew point temps, and upper level jet stream are all phasing to get severe weather to roll into TN, KY, and GA this afternoon. I’ll have the map. It’s starting as freezing rain in the New England states, and freezing rain advisories are up for a good chink of the region. It should be all snow in Me, with around 5-10” falling today. The fire weather calms down a bit for northern TX today as the wind dies down, but south TX will still see the dry and windy conditions today. The NW is getting more action too, with snow on the Mountains and rain in the valleys. As you can imagine, air travel delays will be long today with all the storms and snow. I’m forecasting at least 2 hour delays in NYC, an hour for ATL and Philly (at least). I’ll have the updates for you. This is so funny... Have you seen the viral video of the baby, who laughs at ripping paper? His daddy got a job rejection letter. He tore it in half and little Micah loved it! So dad just kept ripping stuff! Actress Alyssa Milano reportedly saw this, tweeted the link, and it went viral. It's had more than 250-thousand hits on YouTube. Like Charlie Sheen to a phone interview censor, today’s weather will keep you on your toes. The storm from yesterday over the south is moving through the MW and into the NE. It’s centered over KY now, with a cold front dipping down to the Gulf and a warm front stretching into New England. When you see it on the satellite it looks like a comma, and that is the sign of a powerful system. Heavy rain, wind, and snow is all wrapped into this thing and I’ll show you the action on the show. I think 6-12” of snow in interior NE will be common, as well as 60- mph gusts from DC to Boston. Air travel will be greatly affected, so tune in to see who is getting hammered the hardest at the airports (I’m betting NYC/Philly will see at least 2 hour delays today. I hope not, but it looks bad). After the 10 tornado reports yesterday, with 2 near Nashville alone, the Mid south and SE dries out this afternoon. The West is a different story. Another shot of energy will slam into CA this weekend, with heavy rain and snow in the Mountains edging all the way through the Rockies. San Francisco will most likely mix with rain and snow this evening, with the snow level around 350-400 feet. 1-2’ of snow for the Sierra is a good bet too. Hey it’s Friday, at least that rocks. Later! Filed under: Bob Van Dillen High winds HLN Snow Tornado Weather February 24, 2011 Bob's Forecast: Severe StormsPosted: 07:33 AM ET
The weather today will be more active than a Lohan police blotter. The first severe storm day of the year is starting to unfold around TX and OK, and that will head east into AR, MS, TN, MO, and KY today. Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes will develop around the Mid Mississippi Valley this afternoon and tonight. I’ll show you the risk area on the show. Rain is going to come down in sheets, so flood watches are up for KY, TN, AR, MS and up to OH. Look for 3-4” of rain. Once the cold air gets involved tonight, it will switch to snow on the northern fringes of the storm, so there are winter storm warnings from KS to ME as well. Again, I’ll have the details. Out west, it’s more snow. Winter storm warnings and watches cover everybody from the Rockies to the coast, with a blizzard warning in Spokane right now. The cold air comes cracking in tomorrow too, so for the first time in 30 years San Francisco may see snow. The best bet will be in the North Bay Mountains, but SFO may mix the snow with the rain too. Just a heads up, traveling today by air will be better than tomorrow, but neither day will be a bed of roses. See ya out there. Bob's Forecast: Winter Storm Falling ApartPosted: 06:09 AM ET
Like Fergie and a royal wedding, northern New England got snubbed yesterday. I think they are happy about it though, b/c I’m sure they are sick of the snow! Most of the snow fell to their south. The winter storm that threw about 3-6” snow from NYC to Philly and Baltimore is moving east and falling apart now, but light snow is still hanging around PA, NJ, MD, and DE this morning but I expect it to be gone by this afternoon. More light snow is falling under a weak impulse near Chicago, and the WI/MI/IL snow will head to IN and fall apart today as well. I think there’s enough snow and wind to see minor delays at the major airports around the region, so I’ll update those on the show. Skip to the south, and I’m watching some light rain near AL, GA and the Carolinas along with dense fog in South FL. The middle of the country is quiet, but more snow and rain is falling over the NW. A series of storms will head in off the Pacific over the next few days, and there are winter storm warnings and watches for ID, WA, and OR. I’ll show you the projected snowfall through Thursday. Filed under: Bob Van Dillen HLN Weather February 21, 2011 Snowstorm Heading EastPosted: 06:24 AM ET
Good morning everybody, more snow to talk about today. The storm that wrecked Minneapolis is headed to the East, and it’s slamming the MW and NE right now. MSP got 12”+, and I expect to see areas in Central MI, NY, and PA get about the same thing. The snow seems to be heaviest in one band that stretches from Long Island to MI right now, including the NYC metro area. Snowfall rates are about 1 to 1.5” pre hour, so I bet NYC will see around 3-5”. The snow will move off the coast later this morning, but the next round will aim into the Mid Atlantic region this evening and tonight. I’ll have the latest radar and snow fall predictions. Under the MW storm, the air is still mild. Heavy rain and storms are dotting the region from IL to MO. The radar looks pretty active for this early in the morning. Out west, more rain and snow for the North CA coast. The new storm is much weaker than the ones form last week, but I bet it will mean a short delay for San Francisco with low clouds. Air travel details on the show also. That’s a brief look, see you out there! Here we go with the Friday forecast, and it doesn’t change much from yesterday. Two storms, one over the West and one over the Great Lakes right now. Lots of wind for the MW and NE today and tonight below this impulse, so I think lengthy delays will develop later today in NYC, Chicago, and in between with the gusts tot near 50 mph. It’s a two bagger bumpy ride. Warm air is back for the Plains today, but not quit as nice as yesterday. OKC hit 80 degrees yesterday breaking the record of 79. That’s the same spot that hit -5 last Thursday! Wow, that’s a bigger jump than the gas prices over the same period. More wintery weather is headed to the West Coast, and that will last off and on through Sunday. There are winter storm warnings for CA, NV, UT, AZ, ID and CO. The rain will hammer away at southern CA, and I think it will be unstable enough to produce thunderstorms in San Diego and Los Angeles today. I’ll have the whole weather deal on the show for you!
