Who is the sunshine in "Morning Sunshine?"

Posted: 08:34 AM ET

A huge "Thanks" to all of you who have clicked the "like" button on the "Morning Express with Robin Meade" Facebook page.

Now, if you were up REALLY early facebooking with us today, you MAY have seen this exchange between two of your fellow viewers:

Patricia E.
Robin, you make my day better when you say, "good morning sunshine!" Thanks for that!

Bernice M.
Do you know if she is addressing someone in particular? I have often wondered. I like Robin.

Well Bernice, here's Robin with the answer:

I say "morning sunshine" to you the viewer. All viewers. Its something I've always said. I got it from my father who used to bellow, "morning sunshine" when we were kids trying to wake us up for school. "Morning sunshine," one time, and if you didn’t get up after that, he’d rip off the covers and the brisk Ohio air would get your hiney moving and getting ready for school. So for me, that’s the origin of the greeting "morning sunshine," but it's directed toward all viewers.

Kenneth Close   July 23rd, 2010 11:13 am ET

I like you Robin but hate self promotion.

David   July 23rd, 2010 11:24 am ET

It's so warm to wake up to your rays of sunshine. Thanx for starting my days brighter ! Tell your dad what a great wake up call.

Don from Albany   July 23rd, 2010 2:24 pm ET

That must be a midwest thing. My grandmother and my mother used to say that to us every morning when they heard us sturring about. I have been saying Morning Sunshine to both my kids and wife everyday since forever. Sometimes we would be greeted with "wake up and pee the worlds on fire". Especially if we didn't respond to "morning sunshine" I am originally from Iowa/Nebraska. :)

Kimberly Kelly   July 23rd, 2010 5:14 pm ET

And I thought it was just me!! ;)

Cindy   July 23rd, 2010 5:39 pm ET

I love the morning sunshine comment, but there is a sad side for me too. We have a daughter, and when we were adopting her, I would sing the song, "You are my Sunshine" to her. Then bio family who had not been around for over a year suddenly came back and tried to take her away. She would bounce on my lap and say SUN SUN, wanting me to sing her that song, and I would, but when it came down to that final line, it would nearly destroy me.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
She's 28 now. We won the challenge. Adopted four more kids as well and are now adopting another four. (I know, nuts.) She's still my sunshine. When you greet us with Morning Sunshine, Robin, I think of her.

Jackie   July 23rd, 2010 5:42 pm ET

Thought she was talking to me.
Wishful thinking, I guess!

Marcia D   July 23rd, 2010 5:51 pm ET

My mom loves to say "morning sunshine, " too, so I always think of her when I hear Robin in the mornings!

Dana   July 23rd, 2010 6:20 pm ET

I had always wondered about that too! My Dad ALWAYS said that to me when I woke up on Saturday and Sunday morning! I love hearing it from Robin. I reminds me of him, he has been gone for 11 years now, it brings back very fond memories!!

Chuck Vaughn   July 23rd, 2010 11:19 pm ET

I have a question about your dogs. Well, my Golden Retriever, Loki, has a question...he's a retriever, but he doesnt retrieve anything. I have to go after that %#$@! little blue ball..anyway...whats the number one dog treat in your house? He hears "Mornin, Sunshine!", he knows it's time to get up. We love you. And Bob, YOU ROCK!!

Kathryn, Gretchen, Jon, and Lloyd Brinker   July 24th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

Oh, yes: Robin's beauty and her charisma with presenting the various news headlines captured our attention–and hearts–at first glance !!! But, the morning greeting of "Good Morning, Sunshine ! " was her loving way and personal touch to all her dedicated viewers . . . it was what made her message so unique and different from the other morning anchors and their networks' morning shows !!! We highly recommend Robin's book, "Morning, Sunshine ! "–it is packed with very humorous and informative facts about our sunshine girl !! Go buy it !!! Now, we were very happy and surprised to see our Robin on this Saturday's segment of "Clark Howard" !! It was the one with her helping to build Atlanta Habitat for Humanity homes; and it was quite cold and blustery for the event (but the turnout was impressive). All for a good cause !!! We needed a distraction here in New Orleans/Metairie, especially with Tropical Storm Bonnie lurking in the Gulf–and delaying the so important, continued oil spill cleanup !!
Robin, hoping you have a great weekend . . . and we love Ya, our Ohio girl !! :) Robin's Follies.

Erica   July 25th, 2010 7:55 pm ET

Im one of the people up early that get the pleasure of the comment I will watch the sun set and rise mostly everyday. Like the beginning of time when god made the sun and the moon to show the difference between the day and the night each day brings its own worries and yet you have to push through for u know there are things that needs to be done before night falls. Each new day I pray for change that all the corruption shall stop and be over before night falls even though I have found peace in myself to watch the world thrive off of the pain of others is quite sad. I try as much as I could for others to see the truth so there would be no need to keep up the lies that this world has brought on now I see why they keep church and government seprate because if you mix the both together you can catch the timeline of Jesus death and from then on it has been nothing but war and people trying to take over the world satan was the first to rebel and has trained many others to follow his lead thats why when you go looking for the truth the vipers ran and hide because all they know is the lie that has been passed down since the beginning of time but somewhere it has to stop somewhere good has to shine throught the evil. So people need to stop looking to the sun for another day to earn a buck but another day to change the world for the better and how to save every life that can be saved by doing good thought not by sending troops to kill for a better way because when the sun sets life is the only thing that is lost, this trash that people live for will still be here piling up in the land-fills causing more waste than good. So when you wake up every morning you should be thinking what good can I bring to this day and in the lives of the people across the world. What will your good deeds amount to in the end.

George A.   July 26th, 2010 9:59 am ET

Robin
I just want to say thanks for always having a big smile about life!! I love you!

Mary Newman   July 26th, 2010 3:08 pm ET

I disagree with Kenneth what's his name.
I do not sense Robin as a self-promoter, and think I have seen enough of those types to discern the difference.
She is delightful and makes me smile in the mornings.

Kathryn, Gretchen, Jon, and Lloyd Brinker   July 27th, 2010 12:11 am ET

Thank you, Erica, for your very inspirational verse and message !!! It was so thoughtful and beautiful of you to share with all of Robin's "Morning, Sunshine ! " viewers. The world would be a much better, loving place with more people like you, Erica. Thanks again !!! Have a Happy Tuesday, Robin . . . we love Ya, our Ohio girl !! :) Robin's Follies.

Chris   July 28th, 2010 12:29 am ET

Isn't it nice waking up to two sunshines in the morning.Your gorgeous Robin awesome work. From canada

Mandy   July 28th, 2010 1:57 pm ET

Hi Robin! I wanted to share an experience I recently had with you. As you know, many Americans have been struggling financially – me being one of those Americans. I contacted Discover Card to inform them that I was unable to make a payment; I lost my job and now have no unemployment benefits. Their response to me was to "donate plasma"! I couldn't believe that they suggested selling a part of my body to make a payment. How degrading! What's next, selling organs or even your body!
Thanks
Mandy

Thanks for upbeat tone each morning. I listen to you everyday on the way to work. After more than 25 years in the military, some days I would rather stay in bed knowing what is waiting for me but it makes me smile to hear you be so upbeat and I enjoy hearing you laugh.

Hello Robin:

LOVE the boots today! Great to see you looking so sassy so early in September. Where do you buy your boots from? I will have to get a pair like you have on today.

Great show today! :)

JoAnn   September 3rd, 2010 9:24 pm ET

We often call our teenage daughter "sunshine" when she's being crabby or dramatic, etc...as teen girls can be. One morning while watching you, Robin, my 5 year old daughter woke up and made her way down the stairs. So I gave her a "good morning sunshine" to which she too great offense and clenched her fists and stomped back upstairs. We did this 3 times and I scolded her for being so grouchy when I was saying something nice. Through her tears, wiping her eyes, she stuttered out..."that's not nice to call me that, that's what you call Sierra." (our teenage daughter) What a good laugh we've had over that one!

LOVE LOVE LOVE watching your show every day! Thank you!

Jon   September 8th, 2010 2:45 pm ET

Robin, You're positive attitude and smile always brighten my days that I am able to watch your broadcast. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Mike Schultz   September 9th, 2010 8:37 am ET

I'm 66 years old and have never written to a celebrity before. I don't usually watch TV, but listen to it. You have a great speaking voice and personality. I like your style of reporting very much. The fact that you are easy to look at makes it a lot better. I turn on every day to listen to you, and am disappointed when you take a day off. Keep reporting.

Sunshine   September 9th, 2010 12:00 pm ET

Honest, it's my name! Love your show, and not just because you say morning to me everyday! Very good at what you do, seems the whole crew has fun and enjoys what they do.

Maggie Kopko   September 14th, 2010 8:35 am ET

I watch your show everyday in Houston Texas. I loved the "Doctors for Veganism" segment during today's show. My husband and I became vegans 3 months ago after he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. John Robbins vegan books inspired us. We feel great, lost over 60 pounds together, and my husband's heart is getting healthier. You should do a segment on Mike Tyson who became a vegan over 8 months ago. He looks great and the diet has helped him get rid of his mental issues.

Richard Lewis (Richlew)   September 14th, 2010 8:43 am ET

I remember you saying that your father said that "Morning Sunshine" and thank you for adding it to your morning to all of us. For all of you, Jen, Bob, Rafer, and yes the missing Richard.. You are our sunshine in the Morning, SO (Morning Sunshine) Have a great day today and wonderful tomorrow.

Don James   September 14th, 2010 11:22 am ET

30 years ago when I started my radio career, the best advice anyone gave me was "be human".

I got turned on to your morning show by one of the best news guys I ever worked with. He said, "I know you, you'll like her."

He was right. Thanks for a very human, personal delivery. It sounds like you're "just sittin' in a room with a buncha friends!"

As easy as you make it look, that's tough to do.

Bob   September 15th, 2010 12:07 pm ET

You mean you're not saying that to me, personally?? I'm crushed. Thanks for starting my days off with a smile.

Edna washington   September 19th, 2010 6:10 pm ET

To Robin Meade: I only listen to the News with Robin. The other news is unimportant compared to what Robin has to say. I love the way she presents different issues! x0x may your husband forgive me? I had my ablity to have sex taken away with cancer.
Who should run Health Care if not the Insurance Companies that just want what to make money. Please, tell me that social security disablity payment will not be conceled or stopped in this depression?
I see some people working but are still facing high gas prices, food prices, every year property taxes are higher.
I need not just the news reported but answers to the problems that will help people. I have not seen reports about how the homeless people that lost their jobs how are they going to get throught the winter. Yes, my family is three months behind on our mortage with AHM. CO. 30 days behind on our car payment with wells fargo and they will not wait. If they do find my wife that just started a new job she will not be able to continue or buy another car as our credit has become bad because we have been trying to pay for a family member that has survied cancer, our bills, my sons college and he will complete the arts institute in a few months. Two years ago he had a DUI that cost $10,000 dollars. I keep praysing. Help!!
Please, look at my art work at http://www.redbubble.com or http://www.fineartamerica.com I have on month until my membership is over. May God bless Robin You Are A Light In The Heavens!!

Something I say to my children every morning for the past 14 years.

Linda Cookson   October 7th, 2010 8:08 am ET

Robin...thank you for informing my husband that you say "Good Morning Sunshine" to ALL your viewers. He's a little down right now but after 38 years of marriage....I'm sure he'll get over it.

Really....your approach to you viewers is very personal. And your commentary to so many of the articles is very much enjoyed. For all the bad news we hear everyday, the variety of issues and stories is very refreshing and easier to take throughout the day.

My husband asked me to say "Thank you" also...Q(:-}

Butch Hollenbeck   October 14th, 2010 2:49 pm ET

You make it a pleasure to get up each day and face whatever is in store. You haven;t mentioned your puppy in quite a while. What ever happened to the Supreme Court hearing both sides of the hateful church picketing at our fallen soldier hero's funerlas. I never heard the outcome?? thanks Robin you are the best. Butch

Good Morining Robin Meade, The news is insane. You make it ok to listen to. Love your delivery of the news. You are beautiful and your new hair cut is wonderful on you. I love it.! Don't tell my wife I am e-mailing you. She still does not understand I am disabled and chain to the T.V. and bedroom. You make my day!

Jason   November 8th, 2010 2:54 am ET

My mom always said "Wake up! Its daylight in the swamps!" Not sure what that meant. I like "Good morning, Sunshine" a lot better.

Marie   November 8th, 2010 9:23 am ET

Good morning sunshine, you are the true sunshine in our life. When I do not see you on some fridays and week-ends I feel like the sun is not out yet.
I have been watching your show since I got pregnant and I will be du in december so I hope I will still be around watching with the baby.
I can't wait every morning to see what you are wearing and what is your hairstyle, by the way I love the recent hair cut. In the morning the first thing I do is to turn my tv on and look at your style from your hair to your belt or your boots, and I love it when you go beyond people expectations. I have not seen a women that rocks the news like you do, but anyway I am one of your biggest fan, I just wish I could talk to you on the phone or just get a message that tells me that you did read my email.
Thanks to you Robin

GT   November 10th, 2010 8:36 am ET

Every one is either welcoming or grieving military people. What about the mothers that have just lost children and still do the holidays?I,myself lost 2, my youngest was on NEW YEARS DAY 2010. To all moms out there may your holidays b as best they can. REMEMBER TO SMILE. That seems to steer people away from the sadness. HAPPY HOLIDAYS MOTHERS EVERY WHERE..You R all in my prayers!!

John Norris   November 30th, 2010 5:38 pm ET

CORRECTED !
Robin, I have been a firefighter for 48years, I cannot remember any news anchor that can truly light up my day such as you, when I hear that robust greeting in the morning "Good Morning Sunshine" I cannot help but start my day with a smile. Your program each morning is viewed before I leave for work, and as soon as I enter the fire house to give my morning briefing. I can always rely that the off going shift, as well as the oncoming shift will have your program on bringing them up to date on the latest news and weather. As Chief of the Sunrise Beach Fire District, in Lake of the Ozarks Missouri, I have made a point to copy your greeting with the people we serve, after all it fits with our reply to the people that ask "How is it at the Lake" and our reply is "Just another Day in Paradise"
In behalf of all of the firefighters across the nation thanks so much for your precise and sincere reporting, and your work with our troops.

Thank you for this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for “Good Morning Sunshine"
CHIEF NORRIS
