American Idol Recap – uninspiring inspiration

Posted: 04:02 AM ET

*Note: the "American Idol" recaps are a series of blog posts from "Morning Express with Robin Meade" Technical Director, Keri. Keri knows what every button on that giant panel (above) in the control room does, and she presses most of them while putting "Morning Express" on your TV every day. Keri is also a long-time Idol fan and provides the Morning Express writers and producers (who typically go to bed way too early to watch "Idol" live) with a recap. We get a kick out of Keri's "take" on the show, and thought you might as well. The opinions below are Keri's alone and do not necessarily reflect those of the staff of "Morning Express with Robin Meade" or HLN. Here are her impressions of last night:

It is “Idol Gives Back” week, and tonight (Wednesday) we will be treated to a 2-hour star-studded event that will tug on our heartstrings (and purse strings) like no other night of “American Idol.” But first, in keeping with that vibe, the Top 7 sang inspirational songs last night.

Idol top 7We were introduced to their guest mentor – Alicia Keys. In harmony with this week’s theme, she helps children and families devastated by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Music can make you feel, and after 12 Grammys and 30 million records sold, she wants to help the contestants “bring out that emotion and bring out that truth in a song.” I hope she can.

I am still reeling from last week’s swirly vortex of light (probably the coolest looking thing I’ve seen on Idol) that left me wishing I could get sucked into that wormhole and deposited in some alternate time or universe where it was still Season 8. But I must get over my nostalgia. And in honor this inspirational week on Idol, I’m going to wipe the slate clean. Start fresh. Forget the past (or try to at least… since I can picture the eye roll of disbelief from my friends & family caused by that last comment). Top 7… I am ready to be inspired!

THE INSPIRED (in order of appearance):
LEE: Alicia doesn’t want him to lose sight of what his song is about, and Lee appeared to really connect with “The Boxer.” Though I chuckled when he sang about “mumbles” since he has a tendency to do that. I don’t think chuckling was the reaction he was going for. I thought he was good, but the judges loved him. Ellen loves his “soul and depth.” Kara thought this was his “moment.” Simon thought it was “sincere, emotional, and inspirational… absolutely brilliant.”

CRYSTAL: Alicia thinks Crystal is very special. For the first time this season, Crystal was sans instrument. On top of that, she started off “People Get Ready” a cappella. And then she inspired herself into tears and choked up for her ending notes (you could hear how she meant to end it on the rehearsal footage used during the phone numbers montage). Standing ‘O’ from Randy. Kara said they call her MommaSox because she “just schooled all those contestants!” Simon thinks she is “in a completely different class.” Crystal explains she was emotional because her dad was in the audience for the first time. Then she tries to pull the hanky from Ryan’s pocket to dab her tears only to find that it was taped in. “Oh Hollywood,” she exclaims.

THE UNINSPIRED (in order of appearance):
CASEY: Alicia wants Casey to really give a lot of personality to “Don’t Stop.” Great electric guitar. But other than that, it was the usual from Casey, consistent, but not special. Missing his “Jealous Guy” performance (me too), Kara is frustrated that he made himself just like everyone else. Simon said there was “zero emotion… no originality… lazy song choice.”

TIM: He chose “Better Days.” Love the song, but I so wish someone else (anyone else) sang it. Tim always sounds out of breath and never quite finishes the notes. Ellen compared him to the soup of the day… sometimes you like it, sometimes you don’t. Today, she “didn’t like the soup.” Simon feels that Tim has shown improvement over the weeks, but this was “a little bit of a letdown.”

AARON: Aaron has been singing “I Believe I Can Fly” since pre-school (not that long ago). Alicia wants him to connect so deeply with the song that it almost makes him cry. Not even close! The vocals were clean, but I think even he fell asleep part of the way through. Really strong ending though. Ellen said there was a brief time in the 70s when she thought she could fly, but thought Aaron was “real good” on a tough song. Kara thought he had trouble taking off but was finally flying by the end. Simon said, in the real world, he would have turned off the radio “within 10 seconds.”

SIOBHAN: Alicia advises Siobhan to milk her money notes. Looking like she just exited a butterfly garden with a few stragglers hanging on, Siobhan sang “When You Believe.” It was pretty, but it seems like it takes so much effort to control her voice that I feel uncomfortable watching her. Randy thinks she did “just OK” on the toughest song of the night. Kara felt it was technically well sung but too dramatic. Simon was distracted by the butterflies (which he mistook for leaves), and thought it was “old-fashioned” and “all over the place.”

MICHAEL: Alicia wants Mike to take people on a ride. Mike hopes to soar on “Hero.” I was more inspired last week. Ellen thought he did a great job. Kara thinks he made the song “unrecognizable.” Simon thinks he sang it well but felt it was “artificial.”

Inspirational songs? I’m not inspired. I tried, really I did. Thank goodness for MommaSox! If the rumors are true that she was thinking of leaving the show, I’m glad she changed her mind. Season 9 without Crystal would be like grilled cheese without the cheese… TOAST! Oh no, did I really just say that? Sorry! On second thought, no lack of cheese here.

The “Idol Gives Back” charity event is tonight (Wednesday 4/21). This is the night when Idol reminds us, that after taking our Tuesday and Wednesday nights away, they do actually give back something other than corny coronation songs (thankfully none of which were used to inspire us this week). Lots of stars on tap to perform, though strangely, none of them were mentioned tonight. Ryan has already warned they will go long so set your DVRs accordingly (wish he warned us about going 5 minutes long tonight).

Maybe Idol will be too busy giving back and triggering our tear ducts to have a Top 7 group performance. After last week’s Elvis medley agony, I could use a week off. However, they will still have to find time somewhere during the star-studded event to end the journey for one more person when the Top 7 will become the Top 6. Who didn’t inspire you?

YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHERE THE COMMENTS OF THE JUDGES ARE GOING. THEY LEAN TOTALLY ON CRYSTAL. SHE HAS A NICE VOICE, BUT SIOBHAN HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL BEAUTIFUL VOICE. COMMENTS WEEK TO WEEK FROM SIMON, KARA AND SOMETIMES RANDY ARE DEFINITELY TRYING TO DESTROY HER SPIRIT. IF THE RATINGS OF AMERICAN IDOL ARE GOING DOWN COMPARED TO DWTS, MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD CRITIQUE THE JUDGES. AS KARA MENTIONS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS REFERENCE TO SIOBHAN THAT SHE HAS NOT FOUND HERSELF YET. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THE JUDGES HAVEN'T FOUND THEMSELVES MORE. JUDGES GO HOME....

JEFF   April 21st, 2010 8:34 am ET

CRYSTAL CAN'T WIN THE AMERICAN IDOL POPULARITY CONTEST!
SHE CALLS HER CARPET/RUG HOME AND THEN WANTS TO QUIT BECAUSE SHE IS HOME SICK. WHAT A DRAMA QUEEN!

genspace   April 21st, 2010 8:35 am ET

I think Siobhan has a beautiful voice but somehow she has not being able to pick the right song. I also think someone has to tell her to keep it simple and not to pick such difficult songs. To me she is the most talented.

Nino   April 21st, 2010 8:39 am ET

I AGREE WITH GLORIA 100%.

THE JUDGES ARE PUSHING CRYSTAL TO WIN. COMMON! ANOTHER BORING PERFORMER WITH A SWEET VOICE AND NOTHING SPECIAL. ONLY OLD GENERATIONS COULD VOTE FOR HER>

SIOBHAN IS SO SPECIAL!

dblzap   April 21st, 2010 8:47 am ET

Crystal is the only one with talent and experience.

The main reason this season is lackluster is because she outshines the rest of them and it really shows how very much karaoke this show really has been

Spoon-diggity   April 21st, 2010 8:49 am ET

Every week for the past month, I've only watched Crystal's performance.

She is in a different class altogether.

MarkM   April 21st, 2010 8:50 am ET

Can I get sucked back into that vortex with you?

Seriously, Lee? SERIOUSLY? Brilliant? To quote Zoolander...I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I guess we're supposed to listen to the judges and just blindly agree but this dude is boring, unemotional, and looks constipated half the time.

And Crystal, she's a lot better than many contestants, but she's boring. And those tears angered me for some reason. Maybe I"m just jaded after last season. But they felt contrived to me. Like someone searching for an elusive Idol moment...and falling short.

JayLee   April 21st, 2010 8:53 am ET

Did anyone notice that hardly any of these contestants trend on Twitter (except maybe the talentless Tim? It's like the entire world is bored with them.

Sam Crawford   April 21st, 2010 8:57 am ET

That star quality the judges are looking for is generally something that one will have, or they won't. I suppose it can be coached, or learned, or manufactured – and it has been throughout the history of popular music – but I firmly believe the judges consistently lean towards the performers who have this star quality built in already. Crystal could get up there and sing her ABC's and still have the same appeal. If it is favoritism, then I try to remember that pretty much anyone, as a judge, would choose their favorite. This year's winner will be a consistent favorite – concerns about lopsided viewer voting notwithstanding.

Mensi   April 21st, 2010 9:08 am ET

I see no one with "star quality" in this group. And that includes Crystal. Nice voice but visually boring and unappealing. Her only plus is that she's the best of a bad lot.

TinaMcG   April 21st, 2010 9:16 am ET

Everyone else can go home now. It's down to Crystal and Lee. They are both unbelievable. As for Siobahn...she's all over the place and relying way too much on big notes and screeching. She also cannot take criticism. I don't like her attitude at all.

KJM   April 21st, 2010 9:21 am ET

MAMA SOX... Nice performance but... I am tired of the judge giving other contestants the following "you have shown us nothing new" or "you doing the same thing you have done the past few weeks"... NOW WHY HAVEN'T THEY SAID THAT TO MAMA SOX? Agreeeeeeed last night she was the best performance. However, she had repeatedly done the same song every week since the beginning. LOOK Mama sox is ready for her career but lets be honest... she is a susan tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt or any other female blues singer you want to throw in .... I am in a Band with one, so I know wherefore I speak... She has remained in her SOX BOX, or on her carpet, for the entire contest. She took only one risk.. the piano.

People get ready... Rod Steward and Jeff Beck...
Come together ... Michael Hedges or Marcus Miller or any number of others did this better... even the Rutles.

She ain't that great... she is just a female blues singer... the lack of other talent make her look good.

Yes Casey is doing what Casey does, Tim does what Tim does. I am tired of the judges being unfair in this regard... I am not a Tim or Casey fan... In fact I don't really like any of the contestants this year.

Enough for now... I think I am done with this show for this season... Tim Urban and no Katie or any number of others.. the show has gone down hill.

Roy   April 21st, 2010 9:29 am ET

Crystal is clearly in a class by herself. Her performances have consistently been the best, and even on an off night she's as good as anyone else there. Regardless of what happens to the texting fan's voting, she's the one who is most likely to end up with a successful career.

Big Mike is a good possibilty with the right people around him.

Siobhanis a maybe, but she needs to find good people to advise her, AND LISTEN TO THEM, as well as a lot of seasoning. Hitting high notes is an asset but she's nothing in that regard compared to Ella.

MickT   April 21st, 2010 9:36 am ET

Siobhan is the most talented and trained singer. The judges, aside from Ellen, don't actually evaluate the talent they just show up to make
huge sums of money and flaunt their egos. If any one else had cried and botched a song like Crystal they would have been severely bashed by the judges instead the judges awarded the behavior and the senior management of the show edited in a prerecorded ending.

Owlflee   April 21st, 2010 9:47 am ET

Crystal is a star up there. Her voice is so honest and raw, she may not be the best technical singer up there but dang girl has got soul like no other!

Michael   April 21st, 2010 11:13 am ET

Calling last night's performances 'inspired' was a long stretch – it was honestly one of the more painful nights of American Idol I've seen in quite a few years – and distressingly so for an episode so far into the season when everyone should be at the top of their game now. With that said, Crystal, Casey, and Lee were probably the best of the night (given, not great), but the other four...ouch. I think Aaron's going home to be honest...http://thesmogger.com/2010/04/21/idol-hangover-the-final-7-perform/

vinny   April 21st, 2010 11:19 am ET

I agree with everyone that says Siobahn has a beatiful voice, but it is also true that she is usually all over the place and rarely delivers a completely great performance. For that reason she should not be viewed as the best. Crystal on the other hand always delivers, which is why she deserves the praise. Lee also does not. His one and only really great performance was last week. Now he is one that gets undeserved praise from the judges. That's just wrong.. It's gonna be Lee and Crystal in the finals unless "little girl nation" keeps votingTim forward. Anything is possible.
I mean, remember Taylor Hicks. Yikes!!!

Renee   April 21st, 2010 11:54 am ET

I am with all of you Siobhan is amazing. Crystal is in a group all by herself, kind of like Daughtry(spell?) and I bet will be voted off the same as he was.

Mary Towers   April 21st, 2010 2:06 pm ET

My order:
1. Crystal – Real musician, great voice and singing technique. Most mature and ready to shine in the group. Genuine.
2. Mike – Good voice and stage command. Needs to control his ego. Enough with is "muscles" (or fat?). Needs to be more humble and don't think he is made.
3. Lee – Best male voice. Needs more confidence and singing lessons to control his pitch.
4. Casey – a diamond in the rough. Has he stooped learning? Seems to have stalled on his development, but he is truly talented.
5. Siohban – Good voice when controlled. Otherwise, too nasal. Needs to lear how to sing and use her voice. Screams too much, can't hit high notes with control. Too immature, doesn't accept criticism.
6. Aaron – Great voice, too young to realize how boring he has become with his poor song selection.
7. Tim – Is not THAT BAD....has a future as a TV teen idol...Disney channel, Glee, etc.

Ann   April 21st, 2010 6:42 pm ET

I just discovered the most amazing song: GALWAY TO GRACELAND. I could hear Siobhan, Lee or Casey performing it well. Also, one of my all-time favourite songs from Canada's Ian Tyson (no, it's not Four Strong Winds ha ha ha) is SOMEDAY SOON. I can DEFINITELY hear Siobhan on that one.

Koodos to a job well done last night no matter what happens tonight!

Ann   April 21st, 2010 6:59 pm ET

I just read back the comment about Crystal being a Drama Queen since she's homesick. She has a CHILD so OF COURSE she's a little homesick! Whoever wrote that either has no kids or is the DAIRY QUEEN herself skating on Olympic Ice!!!

darlene   April 21st, 2010 9:44 pm ET

tim belongs on the brady bunch, get up to date with the hair dude.
As far as im concerned they dont have an idol this year moma sox should win, but not as a teen idol she belongs to the thirty and above crowd. but hey thats what the judges are. lee could be like sprinsteen, he is good so again he is compared to the old. arron needs to just go country and get it over with wait till he is 20 yahoo.

Wild Bill   April 22nd, 2010 7:27 am ET

ENOUGH!!!!!!!! Let Siobhan sing Pat Benatar, Love is a Battle Field!
