Robin on the red carpet for "Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D"

Kenny Chesney and Robin Meade in Las Vegas for the premiere of "Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D"

You are right there, rocking out with Kenny Chesney.

You are so in the thick of the action, you can reach out and touch him.

You swear you can see beads of his perspiration, yet also make out the facial expressions of people in the nose bleed section.

That's how it feels, watching "Kenney Chesney: Summer in 3D" the new concert movie.

Now in my case, and a theatre full of people attending the premiere in Vegas, we really could reach out to him because he was watching it with us! I never thought about it until then. But can you imagine the pressure the star of the movie feels at the premiere, watching with industry folks, celebs, and family? In this case you had Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaughey, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Jewel, Dierks Bentley and others slouched in their movie theatre seats, wearing wayfarer-styled 3D glasses. Will their reaction be what you want it to be? Will they clap in all the right places? Will they laugh if you want them too? If someone gets up and walks out, were they bored or did they just have to use the restroom?

I should preface the rest of this blurb by saying this isn't a traditional review, because Kenny is a pal who personally invited me to the event. I told him I would attend as a friend and not as a working media member.

The concert footage opens with Chesney in a whatchamacallit-chair-thingy-doodle, suspended high over the audience. (At this moment in the premiere I think of Kenny’s mother, who chatted with me on the way to my seat, and with whom I've banged pots and pans on stage for the finale of a Kenny concert. I wonder how she felt about him being perched so high at the mercy of what appears to be just a few cables holding his weight! Before the movie she tells me she has already seen the film and could "watch it every week!" So sweet.)

The spectacular-looking 3D film was shot over a number of dates in select cities on recent tour. In between musical hit after hit delivered from the concert stages, you also get Chesney's thoughts about his career climb and his personal relationship with his fans.

I know I'm supposed to go gaga over the video component. It is realistic, like moments someone’s hand goes up in front of you and you catch yourself dodging and ducking to get a better view, only to realize... 'Hey, that was up on the movie screen!' And true, you can tell this was shot with the intention of being 3D and
not retrofitted after being shot in 2D.

But I'll tell you what I told Kenny after the premiere: what blew me away was the sound! It’s like the audio was in 3D too (which I guess technically means it's surround sound). But you could hear the character in his voice. You could hear the blare of each horn (I rode to the after-party with the fellas in the horn section. They were so tickled to be in a movie, but so afraid once it started rolling what they would look like on camera. Cute). You are enveloped by what sounds like concert goers clapping from behind you and someone hooting and hollering from in front of you.

The sound was delicious. So much so I asked Kenny if that audio truly was from his concerts or if his voice had been dubbed in later. In fact he said... this was truly his voice from the concerts, albeit with slight tuning here and there. Impressive!

Maybe it’s because I've seen his videos in high rotation on the country music channels. Maybe it's because he's a pal. But besides a few vintage KC photos I hadn't seen before... there wasn't a whole lot new I learned about Kenny through this movie.

With one exception.

The ending.

I don't want to ruin for you. So let's just say it ends on an emotional note showing a moment on stage that surprised even Chesney when it happened.

I know his fans who make it a tradition to attend his concert every summer are bummed he's taking this summer off. But take comfort, KC fans: this movie may serve as the nicotine patch for your Kenny concert withdrawal this year. It’s showing in limited release April 21st through May 2nd.

Great post Robin.

Enjoyed you pointing out it was not retro-fitted for 3D. Think most people didn't know that Clash of the Titans/Alice in Wonderland weren't shot in 3D. Studios saw Avatar and did the 3D after the fact.

Awesome post Robin! But then to me, any news about Kenny and you (my fav morning tv host!) are great!

I have tickets for this Thursday, can't wait! I think I know what the ending is as I was at that concert........ if that is the ending, it was so surreal to be there for that, just amazing really!

hey robin i know this sounds weird but my family last name is meade and i dont know them very well seein if maybe there could be a chance of relation.

That pretty much nailed my emotions and comfort levels as well. It was also pretty special watching it the first time in a room full of people that Kenny would invite to just about any party of his, which included your husband, Tim and yourself.
See you in hot 'lanta!

lucky girl, wish it was me standing next to him... he is truely my fav and has been for the last ten years, can't wait to see the movie... i've seen him nine times in concert, so this will be really fun to see. although i will miss him this summer, it is my treat every summer to go to the concert and have a good time. last year at qwest field in washington i fell and broke out three of my teeth, but i stayed for the concert no matter what.. love ya kenny...

I was actually in that audience, I was given passes to the Red Carpet Premier and it was amazing. I was actually in the very first row and thought it would be terrible, but it was the opposite. I had my head leaned back feeling like Kenny was singing directly to me. Plus to see the view from the stage and really feel like you are there is awesome. Knowing the Man himself was seated not too far behind me made it all super sweet.

Looks like you had a great time,Robin! I am a Kenny Chesney fan. I hope his movie is successful, they may release a 2-d version at a later date. He is coming to Minnesota to perform this summer on his limited tour. When I see his videos, and listen to his songs,I think of you. He is awesome and so are you!!!

Debbie   April 20th, 2010 7:49 pm ET

I seen it at the Knoxville premiere this movie is great I've never seen a movie or video like this ever. In some ways it's even better than seeing him live even if your on the front row or sandbar this movie is like you riding his back. Kenny has really out done him self on this. And for me it was even better because Kenny was back where he comes from at home where we love him and are so proud of him and Kenny was so humbled to be home!

Rosanne Perricone   April 20th, 2010 7:53 pm ET

Wonderful review! I'm sure the movie will be great! You are so LUCKY to be able to know Kenny! By the way, as usual, you look great!

Phillip   April 20th, 2010 9:16 pm ET

Do you think any famous singers might join the team for the kids ?

Heather   April 20th, 2010 10:01 pm ET

I was also one of the lucky ones to attend the Vegas premier. I rec'd a call about 6 hours befor the start to see if I was still interested and available to go, I couldn't stop shaking. When my girlfriend and I realized that Kenny would actually be watching the movie with us we just couldn't believe it!!! We are huge fans and lucky to live in Vegas where Kenny comes every year. (this year 4 times). All I can say is it was a magical night that I will NEVER FORGET!

Mickey   April 20th, 2010 10:02 pm ET

So jealous. I would love to meet Kenny in person. He seems like such a nice person, so real and of course, talented. I love his music and his message. I was so glad to read that he is in a relationship and has been for the last two years. I wish him all the happiness life can offer him.
I plan on seeing him in concert, for the first time, in June 2010 at Bama Jam in Enterprise, Al. . I am really looking forward to hearing him sing in person.
Thanks for sharing your photos.

trish kurtz   April 20th, 2010 11:20 pm ET

I am seeing this tomorow night in Va Beach. Yes, it is a total bummer, for us, that he isnt touring this summer because it truly isnt summer without Kenny. However; it is awesome he is enjoying life and venturing into so many directions and reconnecting with his family and friends as well as ALWAYS thinking about us. There is not a man or entertainer anywhere as devoted and talented as Kenny. Thanks for the great review and I have no doubt that summertime will hit the theatres tomorrow and last us through to next year, in a totally different way. But thats Kenny, making us happy and keeping the mix going :)

keteba   April 22nd, 2010 1:00 am ET

I commented about his realism also. I was at that concert and initially thought, oh brother this is a come on...but as I listened and watched I could see this was really him. His emotions were true and real...This is where that moment comes when--whew!!! its over and yet sadly its over, I am so glad this is in the movie. This proves to all that he really is MORE than just a performer, but a true heart felt human being. A good manlike him is hard to find in this world, especially a true hard working one such as Kenny.

Paula   April 22nd, 2010 4:22 am ET

hope it comes out on dvd sound really good hope so

DE   April 23rd, 2010 12:08 am ET

Just saw the movie. OMG! Kenny just never stops amazing me! I have been going to his shows since 2001. He wasn't near as famous back then and it has been awesome watching him grow into the amazing artist and person he is today. The 3D was more than I could have imagined. It was like he was right there in front of me, better than being on the 1st row at his live shows! I really like the commentary and stories he told. Thanks Robin for not giving the ending away! I thought I knew what it would be but it was another of his "touching" moments instead of what I thought it would be. It was great to be surprised and to see that – just unbelievable. I hope the break he is on is only temporary but he has given his all, plus some, for so many years straight that I know all his fans know he needs this time. We just pray he comes back soon. Seeing everything from his point of view on the stage gave me a totally new perspective as being in the crowd, you don't get to see what he sees at each of his shows. Love ya Kenny! Your friends in Dallas!!!

michelle haverkamp   April 24th, 2010 6:50 pm ET

Go Robin go!!!!

Went To See the Movie This Weekend in Columbia, Missouri. I have never been to a 3D Movie. I thought it was awsome, especially to experience the first one with Kenny. I felt like I was experiencing his concert in all the differnt seats in stadium and of course the best seat would be right there in front. I really enjoyed it. There was only three more other people that was in the theater besides My sister, my mom, and I. But We enjoyed and felt like true Kenny Chesney Fans!!!!!!!!!
