American Idol: Technically Speaking

Posted: 02:56 AM ET

*Note: the "American Idol" recaps are a series of blog posts from "Morning Express with Robin Meade" Technical Director, Keri. Keri knows what every button on that giant panel (above) in the control room does, and she presses most of them while putting "Morning Express" on your TV every day. Keri is also a long-time Idol fan and provides the Morning Express writers and producers (who typically go to bed way too early to watch "Idol" live) with a recap. We get a kick out of Keri's "take" on the show, and thought you might as well. The opinions below are Keri's alone and do not necessarily reflect those of the staff of "Morning Express with Robin Meade" or HLN. Here are her impressions of last night:

Results night on American Idol. Since the judges saved Michael last week, two will go home this week. Are you ready to say goodbye to two contestants? I am! Let’s whittle them down and get this season moving along please. Bring on the “dramatic double elimination!”

We get an actual vote total! I can’t remember the last one it has been so long. “Some great news,” as Ryan put it, with the highest vote total of the season so far… over 34 million. That many? Seriously? Did I miss a number to call for Adam?

There is an Elvis medley group performance from the Top 9. The lip-syncing is getting worse. Corny choreography. Katie is knocking her knees. Crystal is draped all over Big Mike. And it just keeps going and going and going… like the energizer bunny without the energy. Even the camera operator at one point seems to prefer shooting the floor instead of the Idols. PLEASE… MAKE… IT… STOP!

The “Idol Gives Back” special is next week. We watch a video of Season 5’s Elliott Yamin’s trip to Africa with Kara. I couldn’t hear any of it though as there was a local emergency alert message airing on my TV (I wish they did that during the group performance). There will be a lot of big names at the event next week… Black Eyed Peas, Carrie Underwood, Mary J. Blige, Sir Elton John, etc.

In keeping with the “Idol Gives Back” vibe, guest mentor Alicia Keys will join the Top 7 next week for a theme of “inspirational songs.”

Now the results…

THE FIRST CUT
- Ryan pulls Casey, Aaron, and Andrew to the center of the stage. All of them had a pretty bad week.
- ANDREW GOES HOME. The only surprise was that it took this long. He sings himself out with his Top 20 song, “You Give Me Something.” Ouch. But it is not like he had many great moments since Hollywood Week to choose from.

THE SECOND CUT
- Ryan brings the remaining contestants to the stage. He sends most back to the safety of the couches leaving us with Tim, Michael, and Katie.
Tim is safe. Mike and Katie remain… One goes home. The other isn’t even in the Bottom 3.
- KATIE GOES HOME. She’s the first eliminated finalist who actually chooses a song from the finals to sing herself out with, last week’s “Let It Be.” She’s the first eliminated finalist who actually had a performance good enough to do that with. It is not nearly as good this time around, but she is singing through tears.

There is a package looking back at Katie’s and Andrew’s Idol journey (9:58). Andrew smiles through it. Katie is in hysterics. Then they are both on stage together. Wave goodbye.

GUEST PERFORMANCES
- BROOKE WHITE & JUSTIN GASTON DUET: Justin Gaston joins Season 7’s Brooke White for Elvis’ “If I Can Dream.” Brooke sounds lovely alone, but then Justin joins in. Boring. Pitchy. Very fitting for this season of Idol.
- ADAM LAMBERT: This week’s mentor and last season’s runner-up returns to the Idol stage to show Season 9 how it’s done… Taking notes? He rearranged his own song for this performance (originality… check.). Adam begins "Whataya Want From Me" dramatically and quietly in the dark. A vortex of glowing swirling fog surrounds him and ascends into a laser pinpoint above him as if he is about to lift off into space. Then the song builds (Beginning, middle, end… See Casey? Dynamics!). And of course, the signature screams (Listening Siobhan?). Even my DVR seems to be getting into it with lights blinking along to the music (or was I just sitting on the remote control?). Shiny suit. Bedazzled ear monitors. Oh, how I miss Season 8! I’ll admit, the rearrangement, while adding drama, might have taken a little of the groove out of the song making the vocals sound just a bit forced. But I’ll take it. The show was in dire need of the drama.

This season of Idol has been a black hole sucking the light and energy out of my Tuesday and Wednesday nights right up into that swirly pinpoint of light above Adam (too much?). The talent is mostly average and always unexciting. Ryan is increasingly uncomfortable and inappropriate. The themes are dull. But having Adam Lambert back on the show this week made it worth watching. Adam wasn’t a miracle worker, but his honesty was charming. His criticisms were perceptive and constructive. And how great was it to see him perform again on the Idol stage!

Having said that… I worry that whatever short-term boost Idol may have gained from Adam’s return might not be worth it… for them. Season 8’s talents, in general, were like high-definition television in relation to Season 9’s standard def. Watch SD for a while, and it looks OK. It looks fine. But then switch to HD, and it is, “Wow! Look at all the pretty pictures!” This reminded us what we’re missing. Season 9 was just beginning to show some growth last week (kinda sorta), but now I am back to missing all the pretty pictures.

Did the judges make the right decision last night? Sound off here and be sure to click over to Morning Express with Robin Meade on HLN this morning for news in the fast lane and at Keri's handiwork behind the controls.

You are totally right about the arrangement taking a bit away from the songs "groove"-this coming from a hage Adam fan(my favorite singer of all time). The solo guitar in the opening of the song is what really gives the song character, except for Adam ofcourse!!! I have seen him perform that song so many times that for me it was a great change, but I would have liked all the viewers (that haven't heard that song yet) to hear the original version of the song first. Adam's said before that the sound system in that theatre sucks-I think it's the same theatre the AMA's were held at and they had sound problems then. I think he has to raise his voice to overcome these technical issues and there was popping in the microphone! However, I loved his performance and his hair and the mysterious green smoky stage. He was born to perform and his fans (me included) are fiercely loyal!!!

lambert stunk. that performance was too much of all the wrong things = screeching, smoke, lasers, all of the things that make for bad pop. lambert doesn't know the art of subtlety, and the bombast of it all was just too over the top

I totally agree. This season is quite unatractive. Almost boring. Talent is indeed very very average. Even though I followed the selections, I wonder how the judges ended up with that bunch.
There are still at least 3 that should be sent home right now.

Yeah, this season is missing a spark. Even (horrors!) excluding Adam from last season, there will still many watercooler worthy performances, like Kris's She Works Hard For The Money, Allison's Cry Baby sing out, Danny's Come Rain or Come Shine, Anoop's Always On My Mind just off the top of my head. And LOL don't even get me started on the Adam performances that me and my roommates could not stop talking about the next day. This season, meh. Tonight, I was relieved that Idol finally put Andrew out of his misery, felt a slight tinge over Katie because she seemed to be waking up a bit this week, but eh it only lasted a few seconds and I went on with my life.

Count me in as someone who adored every gorgeous over the top moment of Adam's performance. Loved the visually stunning swirling laser vortex with a shadowy Adam inside, loved hearing him using his full vocal arsenal on the song, from soft and emotion laden to his powerful throaty wail, loved the rock operatic hors d'oeuvres of the song contrasted to the rawked out main course, and especially loved that awesome laser Tron moment right at the end where he's intersected with beams of light and he pulls it back in for the final few lines of the song, only to wail out the end, except for that one last oh so pretty couple notes. Phenomenal.

And how cute was he with his excited little exclamation to Ryan, "I brought lasers!" and his sweet "I owe everything to Idol" thank you. What a class act. I know some people just can't let go of the AMA performance, but man that was months ago, he's performed all over the TV, at radio showcases, and all over the world on his international promo tour, without another misstep. I think tonight proves that he has learned from what he's been through, and I was thrilled Idol brought him back to the show again.

Adam did a fabulous job and really hit home what this season is lacking: charisma, entertainment value, and LIFE. Some of the best entertainers in history used OTT stage effects in their acts, so the argument that he is making it more of a spectacle than just presenting his voice is a weak one. He isn't an Idol contestant anymore. He wasn't there to prove to the judges that he has a great voice and visual appeal. He has already been there, done that. He can do whatever the heck he wants to do on stage now!! He was there to promote his live tour and give the audience a taste of what it will be like... and if the rest of the songs are anything like what I saw last night, I will be first in line to by a ticket!

Dorena   April 15th, 2010 11:06 am ET

I loved every second of Adam's performance. I love over the top Adam! He can sing anything. I've heard Whataya Want from me many times and this was another arrangement. Adam is brilliant!!

David   April 15th, 2010 1:43 pm ET

What's amazing about Adam is that he could kill you with his over the top performance or leave you wanting to have more just by sitting on a stool singing an unplugged version of his song. I haven't heard him sing the same song exactly the same twice. Well, that's talent! I can't get enough of this man.

Nadja   April 15th, 2010 1:49 pm ET

Watching the show I caught myself getting angry at the contestants on Adam Lambert's behalf several times because he desperately tried to get them to show some spark of LIFE on stage but they just couldn't or wouldn't listen...
It's even more frustrating because there IS some talent in this year's crop, it's just overshadowed by horrible song choices and lifeless, clueless, BORING performances.

So Adam Lambert's performance didn't just hammer home how much he outclasses the contestants (and many other self-proclaimed "singers" and "pop stars" out there), Lambert was all but holding a sign reading "Hey, kiddies, THIS is what I've been trying to tell you. Listen and learn!"

nottooldyet   April 15th, 2010 1:52 pm ET

Pretty much what everyone is saying...this season SUCKS! Adam did the best he could to give expertise, but if they think they know better, then their fate is sealed! Finally Andrew went home! small miracle! He should have never made the top 10! Katie was just getting up the spunk enought to stand out, and she went home. America is getting it wrong again, first trying to send Mike home, and then saved! Tim should have never made the top 10 also! Looks alone are not going to sell cd's! I will probably not buy or download any of this season's music from idol. I can't understand why they put Brooke and Justin's performance on itunes from last night and not Adam's????? Idol is going to hell!!

Dawn   April 15th, 2010 2:31 pm ET

Thank you for the article and sadly for AI9 I totally agree about the bore fest that is going on. ADAM is the show now and they found their world star in my opinion. Someone of Adam's talent and caliber rarely comes along and for this awakening, I truly thank AI for having him on AI8 and this week.

Adam's GlamNation Tour (announced today on the radio as the name of his summer concerts around the country) has blasted off and I am holding on for the ride:-) And yes, will go see him perform LIVE!

Linda   April 15th, 2010 2:51 pm ET

Adam's performance was the only reason I tuned. Earlier in this season I tried to get into someone, anyone, but this season seems to be missing the spark that season 8 had. There were many brilliant performances by many different artists last year, this year I have not seen any, at all! Well, I guess now that Adam has performed my Tuesday and Wednesday nights will be free. No one will ever compare...Adam broke the idol machine.

Jacki   April 15th, 2010 4:05 pm ET

WEll, I thought I was being so calm waiting for Adams' tour til last night! Now, I can.not.wait!! He better be coming to the Chicagoland area!!! Want to move to the GlamNation!! A true showman, entertainer, amazing singer & has a very, interesting imagination! Love him!

Sharon Bunn   April 15th, 2010 6:21 pm ET

I'm 69 yrs old and besotted with Adam Lambert , as are fans of all ages. I loved Elvis and Michael Jackson, but didn't stop dead in my tracks when they performed. He brings excitement and passion to his performance and his voice is so well trained and pitch perfect, its almost surreal. He's supremely gifted and he knows what to do with it and doesnt take it for granted. Hope the AMA hysteria is finally behind him. He did a great job mentoring a group that just isnt in the same league as season 8 and Adam was in his own league, better than any idol ever! He is a generous, sweet guy and I hope the world will embrace and value this beautiful gift of Adam. Thanks for your great input and support of Adam!

Liz   April 15th, 2010 6:58 pm ET

Adams performance was STELLAR !! Vocals=BEAUTIFUL. Stage presence= stunning. Fox needs to shut down the show. NEVER will there be another with such command as Adam. I only watched this week and found this seasons contestants dull, boring, tone deaf and they all should have been sent home last night. Adam has raised the bar so high !! CONGRATULATIONS ADAM !!!

Cookie   April 18th, 2010 10:21 pm ET

Adam's performance was riveting television. I loved this rendition of WWFM, and I have heard just about every version he has done. Professor Lambert gave a clinic to all watching on how to create excitement and be a star. He did what he told the others: give the audience something to look at, listen to, and feel. I love how Ryan keeps telling him, "You are the real deal." Some of the contestants didnt follow Adam's advice, but honestly, I dont think they have the ability to do what he is asking them, or they dont want out of their comfort zone. They are a boring lot, even the front runner. I dont see any of them selling platinum records, but you never know. This is one AI tour that will struggle to sell tickets. I hope I am wrong, but I do wish all of them well.
