Rush can't blame Liberals for getting sacked

Posted: 09:41 AM ET

Sports Anchor Rafer Weigel

Don’t feel bad for Rush Limbaugh. The man who’s made a career of making himself and his fans out to be victims of the left just got material for months. But this is one he can’t blame on the liberals. This was a business decision born out of free market principals—the very thing Rush prides himself on supporting to the end.

Limbaugh was forced out of a business deal to buy the St. Louis Rams. Given his past comments about the NFL, it's really no surprise.
Limbaugh was forced out of a business deal to buy the St. Louis Rams. Given his past comments about the NFL, it's really no surprise.

In case you haven’t heard, Rush was given the “bum’s rush” by his investment partner, Dave Checketts, who’s leading the group’s bid to buy a stake in the St. Louis Rams. After Colts owner Jim Irsay said he would not approve any bid involving Limbaugh and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he too did not support Limbaugh’s past comments, Checketts released the following statement, which reads in part:

"Rush was to be a limited partner – as such, he would have had no say in the direction of the club or in any decisions regarding personnel or operations. This was a role he enthusiastically embraced.

However, it has become clear that his involvement in our group has become a complication and a distraction to our intentions; endangering our bid to keep the team in St. Louis. As such, we have decided to move forward without him and hope it will eventually lead us to a successful conclusion."

Rush’s response? What else? He blamed the left. Rush’s said on his radio show:

"This is not about the NFL, it's not about the St. Louis Rams, it's not about me, this is about the ongoing effort by the left in this country, wherever you find them, in the media, the Democrat Party, or wherever, to destroy conservatism, to prevent the mainstreaming of anyone who is prominent as a conservative."

The problem with that is, there’s not a more conservative group than NFL Owners. I checked on the Federal Election Commission’s website to see what Irsay’s political leanings are. He’s given thousands of dollars to the Republican National Committee and specifically to George Bush and Dick Cheney’s campaign as well as incumbent Republican Indiana Congressman Mark Souder.

Now, to be fair, Irsay has also contributed to some Democrat’s campaigns but it’s been much less than what he’s given to Republican candidates and those Dems have mostly been Hoosiers from his home state. So while Irsay’s not a “straight-down-the-ticket” Republican, he’s not a “latte-drinking” liberal either.

What Irsay is, is a businessman. And Rush Limbaugh was going to be bad for business. If you’re a champion of the free market—like Rush’s followers are—then you have to see that. You can’t say the NFL resembles a game between the “Crips and the Bloods” or that one of the league’s top quarterbacks is only considered good because he’s black and expected to join the club. I’m sure whatever country club Limbaugh belongs to has turned others away. It’s probably just shocking for him to be on the other end of that spectrum.

And it’s not because he’s a Conservative as he alleges. Keith Olberman would have been denied as well. Mark Cuban would be denied by the NFL if he tried to buy in.

So don’t make him out to be a victim, and he shouldn’t either. Unfortunately, he’d have nothing to talk about if he didn’t.

How do you feel about it? Agree? Disagree? Post away!

Robin,
Please comment on why CSPAN is not taping the Demo's behind the closed door as the President said he would.
Why only Demo's writing the bill?
Love your morning show!

dave   October 15th, 2009 9:54 am ET

I forgot that NFL players never get a second chance. Perhaps Michael Vick should play for the Rams?

noMOREtv4u   October 15th, 2009 9:54 am ET

So slander and libel are okay if it is done by the ruling liberal oligarchy. No one can come up with any clips to back up the quotes they claim Rush said, but that doesn't matter. Shutting down speech and destroying all who oppose them is just par for the course for the fascist left.

Jeff   October 15th, 2009 9:55 am ET

It is a shame that there is more interest from Congress or Senate on who purchases a sport franchise than there is on investigating Bernie Maddoff or crooked dealings in the politics.

Freddy Chico   October 15th, 2009 10:00 am ET

I feel he will blame everything he views as bad on the left or liberals ... i am not a liberal but its crazy how he doesnt see his hatred towards any race other than white has nothing to do with this that its just because he is conservative ....He doesnt want to be held accountable for his actions and he exhibits that every time he opens his mouth

Bill   October 15th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Rush Limbaugh's followers should realize that all of his sensationalized false and often slanderous comments are for the purpose of ratings and fattening his own pockets and that he is flaunting his money by trying to purchase the football team.

Ron Sampson   October 15th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Good riddance, Limbaugh's radical, angry, confrontational personna has no place in the sports world- a place where many fans seek refuge from those exactly like him..

Jason   October 15th, 2009 10:06 am ET

I thinks its great he got SACKED! If he was the owner, he would proboly have changed the mascot to an elephant and change the colors to red. He has no buisness in football.

Chris   October 15th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Poor Rush.Sorry but the Left had nothing to do with this one.Maybe Rush should blame his own Right wing political views.

Denny   October 15th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Someone said Rush can't blame "liberal" for getting "sacked"...

Well, that's exactly what happened.
Left wingers splashed lies about his comments, distorted his statements and bismirched his name without offering one shread of evidence. All in an effort to punish his conservative views.

Since when in this country is a person punished for "alleged" comments? Just in the eyes of left wingers.

I hope the threatened legal action by Rush will expose these people and forcce them to prove their accusations or pay through the nose for it.

Politics do not belong in sports. We are overwhelmed by the politial "Crips vs. Bloods" and we need to have a break somewhere. I would not have an issue with a political leader being part owner of a pro team IF they could keep thier ownership where it should be – hobby/business. Limbaugh is not a politician however. He is a politial commentator and there is a HUGE difference. He uses his ability to get people fired up to spread hate and sepratism. HE IS A RACIST. HOW CAN YOU BE AN OWNER OF A TEAM THAT HAS A LARGE MINORITY RATIO AND BE RACIST?????
I have very little respect for him. He abuses his talent and position to cause major problems. He makes very racist comments and his opinion of minorities is VERY clear. However, when he goes too far and is called out for it, all of a sudden he says "I'm not a racist. It's just the Left. It's thier distraction tatic." HOW CAN IT BE SOMEONE ELSE'S "TATIC" IF IT'S YOUR WORDS????
If you are going to be racist, I can't hate you like you hate me. I can only feel sorry for you. But, be a real and honest person about it. Don't bush beat be upfront and put it out there. I may despise your thinking but at least I can respect your honestly. What he does is lie and manipulate words to elude to it. WE ARE NOT STUPID RUSH. WE ALL KNOW WHAT YOU ARE ALL ABOUT. Stick to the radio. You are just a Howard Stern in a suit. Trash.

paul roman   October 15th, 2009 10:16 am ET

Rus Limbaugh,

Is reaping what his insensitive mouth has proclamed as ignorance,
by insulting blacks, and anybody that not agrees with him.

His investment group drop him, because he is a liability period.

It's sad that a guy who claimed to be an elite, will not "man up" to his mistakes?

It's called Calma_Kudos

If pro sports are all about redemption these days – M. Vick – then let fat boy buy in IF he:

1. Apologizes to the world for everything he's ever uttered.
2. Quits his "job" – why the FCC let's him on the air is beyond.
3. While involved in this sports arena in any way, signs agreement to NOT be involved in ANY way with inflicting his opinion on the world. If caught – pays HUGE penality and is kicked to the curb.

It would be worth it to get that ______off the band & out of sight/mind. South of the Mason/Dixon line other than WTOP – it's all him everywhere which is SAD & FCC needs to SHUT HIM DOWN!

Mary N.   October 15th, 2009 10:19 am ET

About Rush and the Rams. It is the right of the private seller to sell to whomever he wants. HIgh bid, low bid–makes no difference, This is 'still' a Free Country and anyone can purchase or sell legal merchandise to anyone they want to. It is the RIGHT of the buyer to offer to BUY, and the RIGHT of the seller to SELL to WHOMEVER HE WANTS. When this country starts telling you WHAT YOU CAN BUY AND WHAT YOU CAN SELL, this will be the end of democracy as we know it. Just because Rush, or Pres. Obama wants to buy something, that doesn't meet the seller has to sell to him.

Tedd Good   October 15th, 2009 10:21 am ET

Pro sports should unify a community. One can talk about a team in a non political way abd enhance civil discourse. .Rush divides all he touches. He is a bigot not a myrtar. He was done in by the free market, because many fans who support the teams cannot support him.Good teams need to attract diverse players not alienate them. Investors cannot support this divisiveness. Rush is free to say whatever he wants. The market is free to react to him however it will. Bravo to free speech and capitalism..

Dianna Hinze   October 15th, 2009 10:23 am ET

I'm responding to the person who made the comment that if Rush should not discriminate against others, he should not be discriminated against either. Discrimination is judging someone on the basis of the color of his skin, which is something Rush does all the time. Discrimination is NOT holding someone accountable for his own words and actions, which is what happened to Rush.

Ralph Smith   October 15th, 2009 10:27 am ET

For Rush Limbaugh to try and make this a left wing conspiracy is about the most ridiculous and irresponsible thing I have ever heard. He spouts racism to his right wing listeners regularly and then takes no responsibility for his spewing. He shouldn't be in any business at all.
He is famous for his bigotry and is apparently very proud of it. His ousting is free enterprise at work and at its best. I can't believe he is whining about about being ousted by the same system he so vigorously defends.

Darryl   October 15th, 2009 10:30 am ET

The players have to pass drug tests, why not owners? When a potential owner cannot pass a drug test it is time to drop them from the group.

John   October 15th, 2009 10:34 am ET

Rush is being dropped from the bid for buying the St. Louis Rams. No big surprise there. Seeing as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton came out of the wood work once again to claim someone is a racist. Common sense tells you that those comments caused the stir in the negotiations and drove away his business partners. None of them wanted to be associated with a" supposed racist". Seems fishy to me that the partners had no problem with Rush before Mr. Jackson and Mr. Sharpton, who is always so quick to call someone a racist, made their comments about Mr. Limbaugh. I think Mr. Jackson and Mr. Sharpton should keep his nose out of business that does not concern them or their personal life. As a white male in America this has become very annoying. It seems that we will never live this racism business behind because of people like Mr. Jackson and Mr. Sharpton who like to shake things up. I think Mr. Jackson and Mr. Sharpton do this to keep themselves in the spotlight. I also think it was a vindictive move on their part because they don't like the way Mr. Limbaugh addresses the way they handle certain issues on racism.

There is a GOD!!!! Limbaugh is obssessed (for 8 years he did a daily count-down on the Clinton Presidency). No view and no point is worthy except his. He is an egotistical gas bag that will ALWAYS blame someone or something else. HE is a perfect example of what is wrong with America. I see him on the same gutteral level as Howard Sterne. Neither is necessary!! Both are unfortunate and morally bankrupt. (I, as they, am exercising my 1st amendment right to "free speech"). I believe Limbaugh to be a racist and a bigot......he has NO business being involved in ANY sport.

He is a disgrace. He is a simpleton. He is a cry baby. I need never to say, type or think his name again. Thank You, Jesus!!!!

LaRey77   October 15th, 2009 11:27 am ET

NO MODERATION........cancel it...

Minnie Eddins   October 15th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Rush Limbargh must a very unappy person. All he talks is hate of people and our nation. I find it hard to believe that any radio station would put someone on to air such division among the United States people.

James S   October 15th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

“The man who’s made a career of making himself and his fans out to be victims of the left”? You have got to be kidding me. This is an ignorant statement that illustrates why people distrust mainstream media in increasing numbers. Regardless of what you think of Rush, he has stated on numerous occasions that you should not base your happiness on what party or person is in power; to strive be happy and prosperous regardless of the obstacles placed in front of you.

James   October 15th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me! He is being ousted because he has an opinion? Talk about discrimination! What if he was black, do you think this would be happening? Just a state of the country. We thought it would be different but it is the opposite. God bless america and god damn polotics.

Lucy Somes   October 15th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

Thank goodness Rush Limbaugh was denied having a part to play in buying the St. Louis Rams! Not only is he a buffoon but has actually polarized the political parties. I used to listen to him and vote straight Republican but his vitriolic diatribes against Obama in this past election caused me to turn Democratic!!

Cliff   October 16th, 2009 11:11 am ET

A comment about Mr. Limbaugh. My question first is how in the world did those people even ever consider him to be a partner. Mr. Limbaugh, had he have been allowed to continue and been a partner, there is absolutely no telling what comments he would have made regarding what subject.

Mr. Limbaugh can blame no one but himself for his dismissal from the group. And then he wants to blame the left. Mr. Limbaugh what you need to do is to take a real deep hard look at yourself and then realize where the blame is for you not becomming anyones best friend.

He uses the networks to berate anybody and everybody and then expects anyone with no brain to feel bad for him. Tough luck Mr. Limbaugh, you get exactly what you deserve in life.

Angelo   October 16th, 2009 11:42 am ET

I wonder if Irsay would have an issue with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton being part owners of teams? After all, both of them have made racist statements, referring to Jewish people as "hymies" and making other bold, controversial, polarizing statements quite frequently. My guess is that Irsay (and the coward Goodell) would keep their traps shut if someone controversial, but left leaning (or a minority) were in the running to buy a team. That's today's reality. I don't feel sorry for Limbaugh, who is a multi-millionaire and who needed this like a hole in the head. Let him have a different hobby instead. But I do feel sorry for the path the country is taking--when you're blocked from pursuing something because a couple loudmouths who don't agree with your politics make false accusations about you being "racist" which in the case of Limbaugh, is utterly ridiculous. The peope accusing him of racism have never listened to his show-I guarantee that. It's a witch hunt and mob mentaility born out of liberal politics--they use accusations of racisim to villify people they don't agree with.

Angelo   October 16th, 2009 11:53 am ET

I'll add this--Irsay's family are pitiful as NFL owners. They moved the Colts from Baltimore in the middle of the night (again, cowards they are) rather than face the fans in Baltimore who had supported the team since the Johnny Unitas days. They were horrific losers in Indianapolis for decades too. And John Elway is often accused of having dislike toward Baltimore because he forced a trade to the Broncos as a draftee, rather than reporting to the Colts. But the fact is, it was the Irsay clan who owned the Colts that Elway rejected, not the city of Baltimore. No one wanted to play for Irsay back then. And the kid Irsay is as arrogant as the old man. Irsay and Bidwell were clones.

Ron in Jacksonville   October 16th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Rush needs to understand that there are still people in this country who can listen to what people say, analyze facts, form their own opinions and decide things for themselves. We're not all mindless "ditto heads". We heard his comments about the NFL and its players loud and clear and he can stop trying to turn this into something political. It was a business decision and the NFL decided he wouldn't be good for their business!

Arthur   October 19th, 2009 8:54 am ET

Well you must be a Democrate. Lets throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are several things about the Republicans that I personnaly do not agree with but the majority of their ideas I can get behind. Just because I don't agree with everything does not mean that I would abandon the rest.

And yes I voted for Obama. But I will never consider myself a Democrate because there are too many of their ideas I will never understand. Such as the party who supports killing unborn children does not support killing convicted killers. I would find it easier to support a party that would be all pro life or all pro death.

Robert D   October 22nd, 2009 2:03 pm ET

I don't see how blind a person has to be not to see how the liberal left played a large part in preventing Rush from having his dream. Who was making all of the noise against Rush? This is one of the worst acts of discrimination in recent times and because it involves Rush you don't care. This is quite typical of how hypocritical liberals are. I could promise you if the potential buyer was a black, died in the wool Republican you would not have heard a peep from anyone. Look around you and wake up to what is being done to our country. I have lived through many presidents including "Ike" and I never dreamed that a president of the United States of America could do so much so fast to take away the freedoms of the American people. I fear that by the time you do wake up it is going to be too late.

Robert D   October 25th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

I must compliment Angelo for his insight and honesty. I can also mention another major reason that Rush took a beating on this purchase. Rush is anti-union. The last thing the unions want to see is a non-union person playing on their field.

Grant Hays   October 26th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is going to be exposed for the fraud that he is and this is the beginning. This is guy is such an embarassment to the conservative party it is getting shameful. His supposed listeners are uneducated poor people who don't have the ability to discern information on thier own so they listen to him. His bizarre slanted racist dividing statements are appealing to those stricken by ignorance and fear. This dude is one of the most deplorable unethical garbage journalists in history.

A. Smith   October 29th, 2009 4:27 am ET

After this gas bag informs his listeners he wants President Obama to fail, Rush pouts like a child when his toxic fuming remarks come back upon him.

His previous multi-racist comments in regards to the very same sport which he was attempting to become a co-owner of, is a recipe for failure.

This man is beneath the common dignity of respect, and professional rhetorical communication. All that is left is a angry, cowardly bag of hot air that attempts to sow disruption and polarize his audience to extreme views while encouraging them to take extreme measures which Rush himself would never attempt to do himself.

Rush, you helped the Republican Party lose the majority's in Congress, Senate and in the White House. You helped plunge the Republican Party off the cliff of voter viability. And as millions of Republicans fled the toxic morass that Bush-Cheney left for the open embrace of the Democratic and Independent Partys, Rush encouraged them to leave.

You may be a big bag of gas Rush, but you are without a doubt the best example of a speaker for the Republican Party I have ever seen.

Grant, your description of Rush listeners fits no one I know. Very few Republicans I know are embarrassed by him. What statements has he made that are racist? Not sure I follow you on that one. Your last statement about him being a journalist cements the fact that you know nothing about what you are writing. He is not a journalist and does not pretend to be. He is best compared to an editorial writer for a newspaper in that he is paid to offer his opinions.

Goodness. The guy is on the radio 3 hours a day every weekday in every market in the US. You would think someone like yourself would actually take the time to listen to him before forming such a strong opinion about him.

Pat C   November 2nd, 2009 9:09 am ET

Accountability
There are some places in our society where people realize that in order to pe part of the game you have to act responsibly. Having an opportunist like Rush who lies repeatedly should not be good for business. I applaud the decision.

Danni   November 2nd, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Rush Lim"Batt" is just another angry old white man whose simply pissed off because there's a Black man in the White House. I'm sick to death of the polite (and sometimes not so polite) racism that seems to be infecting this county with comments from Rush and his cohorts at Fox who are simply feeding on the fears and prejudices still about in the U.S. by some not so informed other old white men! GEESH, people. No wonder my European friends think this county is screwed up!!!

Re: the eye gouging football player. What would be his punishment if he had blinded his opponent? THAT SHOULD BE HIS PUNISHMENT....his intent...not his failure should be punished. And to say that is just part of football... It shouldn't be.

NICK POUSSON   November 3rd, 2009 10:49 am ET

THE EYE GOUGER SHOULD BE SUSPENDED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON. HIS ACTIONS ARE UNACCETABLE. FOOTBALL IS A GAME, A SPORT, NOT A FIGHT. IF A LESER PLAYER WERE CAUGHT DOING THAT HE WOULD LIKELY BE BANDED FROM SPORTS ALLTOGETHER.

Tina Pampa,TX   November 3rd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

I agree with Joy Behars guest Ted Danson, Rush needs to be quiet and sto preying on the fears of others. I'm also glad his extrimist attitude wasn't allowed in the NFL . What would he do if the players didn't have the same twisted thoughts he has?
