Palin resigns, Morning Express viewers offer parting words

Posted: 11:20 AM ET

As Sarah Palin handed over the Alaska governorship this weekend, the wear, tear and resentments of a year on the big stage were evident for the former GOP vice presidential candidate.

Sarah Palin on Sunday says she'll continue to fight 'for what is right, and for truth.'
Sarah Palin on Sunday says she'll continue to fight 'for what is right, and for truth.'

Her parting words Sunday included a parting shot at the media:

"So how about in honor of the American soldier, you quit making up things. And don't underestimate the wisdom of the people. And one other thing for the media - our new governor has a very nice family, too, so leave his kids alone," she said as she handed off power to Sean Parnell, the lieutenant governor.

Palin's farewell to the governor's office was a three-day rolling picnic, from Wasilla to Anchorage to Fairbanks. Palin, a mother of five, was surrounded by friends and supporters.

We asked Morning Express viewers to weigh in on Palin's resignation, and what they think her future role in politics will be.

What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments field below.

- Sarah Palin is right and she should move on to bigger and better things. I am a firm supporter of her values and of her mission! ~Randi in Aztec, New Mexico

- Smart? SMART?! Are people really trying to use this word in the same sentence as "Palin"? – JF in Oak Ridge, Tennessee

- If Palin cant finish one term as governor why would anybody elect her for any job?

- Palin started her national exposure looking like an idiot so it is appropriate she do the same now. – Jess in TN

- Sarah Palin's not the first to get bad press and wont be the last! – Stew in Las Vegas, Nevada

- Sarah Palin comparing herself to a US soldier? Another disjointed speech! She is done.

- Palin just wants attention. And she knows all she has to do is open her mouth and it becomes breaking news she is old news.

- Leave the poor woman alone. She was a mother before governor. Any mom wants to protect her children. – Imelda, Mom 2 an Angel

- I think Palin resigning is the best thing to happen to Alaska. We all think of her as a quitter! – Rebecca

- Palin should just stay in Alaska and take care of her kids. The world has heard enough from her.

- She should have finished the job the voters elected her to do. No one likes a quitter! Voters will remember the slap in the face to all "lame ducks" in office.

- Thank God Palin is out of office and I pray she never returns to politics. She managed to sound worse with each speech she gave.

- Keep your eyes on her she may just be the real change we so disperately need. – Jerrie in South Carolina

- Palin made a choice she felt was right for she and her family. Personally, I think you need to see your commitments through. It's time to let this go.

- Everyone I know admitted they never heard of Sara Palin until the elections so no hearts broken that she's gone and soon forgotten. – Lynda in Georgia

- Just leave Palin alone she s trying to get her family out of the spotlight and put her priorities in order (Family first). – Jen in Virginia

- Palin has not made a smart move in her entire life. She is an embarrassment to women everywhere. – Christy in Tennessee

- People talk about Sarah Palin running for President. We deserve someone extraordinary in that chair, and she is not it!

- I think Mrs. Palin is just saying what many Americans would if they had a national platform. We should be able to protect our families just like famous people.

- I say good riddance! It's probably the first smart move she's made. Good luck to her and her fight for truth. – Ciara in New Jersey

- A great % of Americans are not interested in "polished". We want straight answers that PALIN is known for. She'll have my vote for president. – Joann

- Good move for Palin. Was only way she could battle the biased news media that continues to attack her unfairly. – Mark in Tennessee

- Palin should be quiet. Each time she speaks, idiocy spews forth. And my eyes are tired of the involuntary rolling. – Jen in Illinois

- I say congrats to Palin. I think she was treated unfairly in the media and Hollywood. Look at the mistakes others have made yet did not have the ridicule.

- Palin hasn't made a smart move yet! She's so unpolished, so small-time ... this behavior will never win her the ticket. – Suz in Chicago

- Smart move if Palin wants to run for president. It will allow her to stay in the spotlight in the lower 48.

Sarah Palin is the epitome of the reason many people (male and female alike) do not take women seriously. She wants all the fame and glory but does not want what goes with it. Let's face it when you're in the publie eye, you have to be prepared for whatever comes your way. By quitting an elected position in government she has sent the women's movement back tremendously. Shame on you Sarah for making women look bad!!!

My comment refers to the Gates episode:
IMO, It's becoming clearly evident that the only racism involved in that incident was from Gates himself! He implored and goaded the white police officer to create an incident so he could call him a racist cop! Gates' connection with the President is no reason for the police to treat this "break-in" differently than any other. Obama should not have injected himself into this single, one-time problem. He should let the City officials do their duty.

My parting words for Sarah Palin. Wave goodbuye to Russia.

ronvan   July 28th, 2009 6:45 am ET

Once again I am in amazement & completely dumbfounded. Looking for Palin in 2012! You have to be kidding. She is an embarrasshment to all those, sucessfull, women. There will be a woman elected president, but not this befulded, non- speaking, QUITTER!

Doug   July 28th, 2009 6:49 am ET

Many people were very hopeful with her nomination, but were let down with her lack of preparation and knowledge. Please don't try to run again unless you are ready. Your personality and ability to ignite a friendly crowd are not going to carry you to national office without a deep understanding of history and current events. I look forward to voting for that person you become by making yourself ready to hold high office.

paula   July 28th, 2009 8:20 am ET

Sarah Palin was treated so shamefully by the media. She is a very courageous young woman, and she deserves respect for standing firm and true to her beliefs. She hasn't done anything wrong, so why was she treated like a criminal by the media? The leftist hatred of her shows their true character and motive. Where were the leftist when Hillary entered the scene? Strange at all the silence.

Sam   July 28th, 2009 8:59 am ET

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to hear her irritating voice anymore, but I guess that won't be happening. I don't see her as a serious contender for office. Sure she appeals to a core of the Republican party, but that no longer has enough people to get her elected to a national office. If I were her I'd go back to huntin' and fishin' to provide for her family, and travel south to the lower 48 to make some money by speakin' to her constituents. It's obvious her skin isn't thick or tough enough to withstand scrutiny from the press.

relnic   July 28th, 2009 9:02 am ET

This is the difference between real public servants and people who are out for fame and fortune. Barrack Obama could be earning millions working for some Fortune 50 Company, instead he turned down the greed of wallstreet to follow his true passion. Sarah Palin was nothing more than a gimmick for the republicans to try to scam some votes. Now, we will see the real Sarah Palin and her true passions as she surfs the country making money on every corner.

Clint   July 28th, 2009 9:54 am ET

Sarah Palin is the most honest, down to earth person that the American people have had the pleasure of having as a GOP vice presidential candidate. The media and holiwood that were pro Obama went overboard and were like adults that regressed to 10 year olds in a school yard playground. Very immature, nafarous and repugnant to say the least…the same thing they did to Joe the plummer for asking presidential candidate Obama a question….only because the GOP used it in their speeches… as I said…pro Obama opponants were totally out of line and acted like adults that regressed to 10 year olds in a school yard playground, very immature, nafarous and repugnant.
But Sarah Palin is above this scum and scum bags…she has a plan that will help the American people as well as her family, God Bless her and God speed.
thanks
Clint

We Republicans are SICK of MS PALIN. She is a joke and like an annoying cartoon character. We don't want her anywhere near the White House. Who would vote for a """JOURNALIST"""" for any office. And WHO WOULD BE STUPID ENOUGH TO BUY HER BOOK?

al payne   July 28th, 2009 10:17 am ET

GOOD RIDDANCE

donald luckel   July 28th, 2009 11:26 am ET

I saw a discussion on illegal aliens and health care
why is it that no one brings up the fact that people like myself are ineligable for government programs such as medical care becouse we have taken out loans to buy our home instead of renting witch would cost nearly double. health insurance for myself and my wife averages $800.00 dollars a month my house payment is under $600.00 dollars a month together we make on average under $2200.00 and so when we try to get help we are told to sell our home and assets before we can recieve any help. I was recently injured went to the emergency room and was told that my broken foot was not a priority and I would have to wait 16 to 20 hours in the emergency room with no pain medication not even an asprin nor ice to control the swelling after 8 hours of waiting they took a woman in for a pregnancy test . At this point I was in too much pain and decided to go home take tylenol and deal with it . my question is . why is it that my tax money is used to take care of people who are here illegally in the form of health care food stamps ect . and I the tax payer am not elligable to recieve any kind of help at all? these people enjoy the abillity to live work and receive all these government programs while paying no taxes ! and oh yea lets not forget that they are here illegally!

jennifer ratliff   July 28th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Ms Pain is a JOKE. Every time she opens her mouth she sounds even more stupid. Who would ever want to buy her book.? That is also a joke- a book!!!!!!

Dona in Florida   July 28th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Sarah Palin may be a great mother, but she is a lousy politician. I hope the higher calling she referred to has to do with her religion and not politics.

Larry Bond   July 28th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

It seems to me that if a person is elected to an office for a specified term, they should consider staying on the job for the entire length of that term...unless the job was U.S. Senator or even governor of a state other than Alaska. Obviously Alaskan Governors deserve special treatment. At least when Governor Palin left office, she left it in good hands. LAB

jennifer ratliff   July 28th, 2009 6:46 pm ET

we are sick of this CARTOON CHARACTER, MS PALIN. Please stop reporting on this stupid JOURNALIST.

JENNIFER IN TEXAS

jennifer ratliff   July 28th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

WHEN IS CNN GOING TO REPORT ON EDUATED, CLASSY PEOPLE AND STOP ALL THE TIME GIVEN TO "'MS PALIN""""". SHE SHOWS HOW STUPID SHE IS. TAKING FOX REPORTERS """FISHING WITH HER""""". I THINK THAT SHE HAS LOST HER MIND.

Gail   July 28th, 2009 7:41 pm ET

"Bye Palin" that's as good as I can do

Alice Stars   July 28th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

It is time for Sarah to move up and on to better things. She is destined for greater adventures. Best wishes

Jane   July 29th, 2009 3:54 am ET

Finally! Sarah cries foul at everyone, points her finger, puts a village and the state of Alaska in debt and calls it quit before her first term is over. I hope that she crawls back to her village and begs for her Weather Lady job back.

Robert Rotheram   July 29th, 2009 7:50 am ET

Palin needs to forget about running for another office and just pose for playboy.

moudo   July 29th, 2009 7:56 am ET

Palin has my vote!. She's a real woman, not afraid to stand up for what she beleives. Moudo

CHARLIE   July 29th, 2009 8:47 am ET

I Believe the real reason for her resignation is yet to be determined. We should all be thankful that she was not elected as VP. If the heat got to be too much for her would she quit that too???

Kalen   July 29th, 2009 9:11 am ET

She's such an emotional nellie and uptight. Imagine her as a boss, and how easy it'd be to get on her bad side. Then imagine her running the country. No way. It's a nightmare enough being a heartbeat away from Biden!

Don Huggins   July 29th, 2009 9:16 am ET

She quits because the media hounded her and her family. Then she embarks on a world tour, dragging them along, and expects to be reported on by her own rules. What an ego. She is helping to elect
dems. whereever she goes.Keep up the good work, Sarah

Kathleen   July 29th, 2009 9:21 am ET

Palin is such a quitter and clearly can't take the heat. Could you imagine if she was in the White House? She might get overwhelmed and have to quit!

Roger VanErem   July 29th, 2009 9:55 am ET

She is doing the thing ,she is feed up with our useless government and is making a stand. Watch Her Get more votes with Family Values.

Dereck   July 31st, 2009 10:38 am ET

What a teachable momment for our children "BE A QUTTER" and some how you will be rewarded! An absolute DIZZY move.

Mary J   July 31st, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Just two words... Caribou Barbie.

Tony in Largo, Fl   August 1st, 2009 1:38 pm ET

There are 24 people in the office at work. The 24 are better qualified and more knowledgeable than Sarah Palin and none of us think that's saying much.

Rick James   August 3rd, 2009 9:37 am ET

So the current 2012 GOP hopefuls are an adulterer, a quitter, and in Sturgess partying with bikers because thier daughter wants to ride a Harley?

Philip   August 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

What are you pinheads thinking? The mainstream media has destroyed this lady since day one. She has done nothing wrong (a mother first). She hides nothing, and the mainstream media keeps fabricating and spinning crap that everyone believes. Sure, she might be unpolished and needs a bit more in foreign politics. However, we elected a peanut farmer (knew nothing of foreign politics) who just about put the US into a depression, and have a “big-eared socialist moron (I will never call him president) running the country into the ground as I write this bloggggg. Do we really need more lawyers in Washington? Pull your heads out and stop thinking Democrats and Republicans. Be smart and informed before you write blogs or vote and don’t listen to the mainstream media for all your information.

Kilmeister X.   August 3rd, 2009 9:45 am ET

Sarah Palin has lost all respect. She quit when the going got tough. She might try to run for prez but people will not forget that she is a quitter. Oh and also hunting wolves from the air is inhumane and barbaric. I hope all those defenseless wolves haunt her in her dreams.

Tonya   August 3rd, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Ican't believe anyone would vote for Sara Palin for any position in politics !please Sara go back to doing the weather & stay there !

Mary Newman   August 3rd, 2009 7:26 pm ET

It amazes me the disdain people exhibit. I my opinion, when you have such extreme reactions, it is a sign of an inner problem. You do not have to like and/or agree with someone, but can't we be civil?

Jamie   August 4th, 2009 6:21 am ET

I used to admire Palin, now I think she is just a woman making one mistake after another.

Ethan Wells   August 4th, 2009 7:45 am ET

The sad part about the Palin situation is that people in DC, people who make political decisions, see her as a blank canvas. In reality? She couldn't even last a term as governor. I don't want a person to be involved in the running of the country if she has NO sense of duty. You finish what you start unless you are completely unable, and her quitting is her waving the white flag of hopelessness.

Katie   August 4th, 2009 7:07 pm ET

When the going gets tough the tough stay and finish the job they don't resign!!!!!

Katie   August 4th, 2009 7:08 pm ET

Don't be a quitter

Nate G.   August 7th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

I should point out that the vast majority of people who disapprove of her attack her on very stupid grounds. Very few of the comments on this site list factual reason why they dislike her, and calling her stupid or not classy is an opinion not a fact. They attack her character mercilessly and it’s sad. My generation and the media turned this election into a high school popularity contest, with commentary and opponents of the same maturity level. And much like drama in high school they continue to attack well after victory, the definition of a poor winner.
Now was she qualified to be president? I don’t think so. But she had a lot of potential. I will miss her and I wish her luck

Ed Schiller   August 7th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

I have never seen a political party commit sucide; should the Republican Party nominate Palin in 2012, they will not be the," minority party" but the, "Almost Extinct Party".

DANIA   August 11th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Good ridance. Palin has a big ego and can't even see how she hurts people by calling them terrorist and all the hateful things she spewed.
She needs to be told that is not the way we want a Vice Prez. or any official to act or speak. I guess stupid acts like stupid does. Throw her out, we have better than her. My child could debate with her and win!
