Your thoughts: Final farewell to Michael Jackson

Posted: 05:59 AM ET

Producer Aimee

Family, friends, and fans have said a final goodbye to Michael Jackson. Some 20,000 people gathered yesterday in L.A.’s Staples Center for a public memorial service for Jackson. Millions of others round the world watched on television, or via Internet.

The event included a line-up of celebrities, singing and sharing their stories about Jackson.

Singer Smoky Robinson set the tone for the memorial when he read a letter from Diana Ross, who did not attend. In it, Ross explained why she was not there:

"I am trying to find closure. I want you to know that even though I am not there at the Staples Center, I am there in my heart. I have decided to pause and be silent. This feels right for me. Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my world, part of the fabric of my life in a way that I can't seem to find words to express."

Among the others who took the stage were Mariah Carey, who performed Jackson's "I'll Be There"; Lionel Richie with "Jesus is Love"; and Usher with "Gone Too Soon.”

Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the service was when Jackson’s 11-year old daughter, Paris, addressed the crowd. She said tearfully: "Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father I could imagine. I just want to say I love him so much."

What did you think about Tuesday’s service? Did it honor Jackson the right way? What was the most memorable moment?

Blog us with your comments. We’ll be reading some of them on the air this morning on Morning Express with Robin Meade.

I think it is sad that we lost M.J. but i feel Mr Sharpton went a bit overboard . This is not a white and black thing. It is the loss of an American icon . We will all miss Michael Jackson...

Enough already. The silent majority doesn't buy the media's obvious rewrite of jackson's "strange" history.

Petra Yahn   July 8th, 2009 7:51 am ET

As MJ was a great musician, let's not forget the "real Hero's" that die every day, they don't get the coverage they deserve. Shame on us

Rita   July 8th, 2009 8:06 am ET

It was a very moving and touching memorial. It's sad that some seemed to be there more to be on the "show" than to be there to remember him.

Mark T. Chambers   July 8th, 2009 8:58 am ET

I think he was very child-like. I always thought when he was trying to be "tough" he came across aa effeminate. I begin to understand why he was the way he was- considering his father's abuse of him and being in the entertainment spotlight from so young on, BUT just let it go.

Yesterday was a very sad day for everyone. I still can't believe that Michael is no longer with us on earth. I enjoyed the moving tribute to him. It didnt' hit me until Brooke Shields got up and spoke about their friendship. I didn't get to see the last hour of the service, but did when I got home. I am still moved!

OK...This is off subject because you don't have this story posted. But How Dumb are we as a nation when we get on NATIONAL TELEVISION and tell ALL THE TERRORIST OF THE WORLD, that the security in our Government Buildings SUCKS?

Honestly, does that really make sense to you?

victor   July 8th, 2009 10:27 am ET

I'm not trying to upset an Mj fans because I am one of them, but don't you think the media should be exposing the American public to more important topics? For example, the whole world seems to band together when a great muscian dies. Maybe the media should present some new topics such a the genocide in Darfur. Think of what could happen.

susan sterritt   July 8th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Very well done respectfull memorial.Elizabeth we missed you .I am disturbed at the lack of this outpouring, when he was alive, and needed it.Lots of unanswered questions still remain . i personaly believe we deserve some answers.Did he lie about surgeries, skin color and paternity? If so why? Mike, I believe in your heart, butwhy must you leave us with questions unanswered? I am a very fustrated fan.

txkboy   July 8th, 2009 8:53 pm ET

I loved Michael as an Entertainer. Like the song says "Gone Too Soon". May he rest in peace. Now we are left with a few months of speculating on the speculation!! It's hard to believe people make a media career based on gossip. It's sad. But I guess you gotta pay the bills somehow.

I think the real issues are that three very young children lost their Daddy, who was devoted and a constant in their lives. No one seems to be empathetic or sympathetic to the fact that death, although inevitable is difficult for children to deal with. M.J. was their father, who seemingly loved them more than we can imagine. In all the media hype, I hope people are compassionate enough to continue the saga with these three inocent children. May we remember to pray for them and his Mother because prayer is what we need to heal the many problems in our society.

he dont have to prove he is innocent anymore   July 8th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I have to say MJ, was an angel. He just left his door open to even the evil people. They tried to drag him through the mud but God didnt let it happen. Peter King, how can you stand up on National TV and call Micheal all those hateful things? Did you get on National Tv and call Mark Foley all those hateful things? Mark Foley was the head person over writing laws to protect our USA kids. Instead he was in the white house being a child molester. Then he ran to therp to hide.. Everytime your Republicans do illegal things you try to point the finger and want America to buy your lies. You all r going to burn in hell.. Your party like to sleep with young boys, yes Mark Foley tried to sleep with the young boys in the White house. Shame on you and your party for always pointing the finger.. Remember Peter King start with the Man in the Mirror which is your self. I bet you got a lot of demons in your closet.

Just read the story were the city of LA, let be know that the memorial for Michael Jackson cost them 1.4 million dollars, and what’s there point. They should have thought of this before they gave the go ahead for the show. Is the staples center owned by the city of LA, or is it privately owned ? if it's privet, then send them the bill, like you would do if it was any body else. I know, go to the White House, they are in a spending mood, they'll cover it......the democrats have nothing better to do with our money.
How many of our Military have fallen since the death of MJ, how many of them had an memorial that cost over a million dollars, how many had them names spoken at all????

The final farewell to Michael Jackson was a beautiful, spiritual, and poignant service . . . Michael's memory will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Michael.

I AM THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT APPRECIATES THE ARTS GREATLY. I HAVE MY FAVORITES IN EVERYTHING LIKE ANYONE ELSE-BUT ON THE OTHER HAND I DON’T REALLY FOLLOW CELEBRITIES’ PERSONAL LIVES-NOT AN ENQUIRER TYPE OF PERSON. I CAN SEPARATE THEIR ART FROM THE PERSON AND THEIR LIVES ARE THEIR LIVES. IN MY MIND THERE ARE GREAT ARTISTS, ACTORS AND SO ON, BUT KNOW THAT THEY ARE JUST HUMANS, SOME WITH INCREDIBLE GIFTS. SO I HAVE NO INTEREST IN WHO THEY ARE DATING, WHAT THEY ARE BEING ARRESTED FOR AND SO ON. WITH EVERY HUMAN COMES FAULTS AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE INNOCENT TILL FOUND GUILTY. WITH THIS I HAD NO IDEA MICHAEL WAS AN INSOMNIAC OR IN CONSTANT PAIN, BUT NOW CAN TRULY RELATE TO HIS BATTLE, BEFORE THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS- I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HIS KIDS EVEN LOOKED LIKE. WITH THIS I WAS IN COMPLETE SHOCK WHEN I HEARD-STILL AM AND PROBABLY WILL BE FOR QUITE SOME TIME. MUSIC IS MY LIFE, WHAT KEEPS ME GROUNDED AND IMPACTS SO MANY PARTS OF WHO I AM. I DON’T KNOW IF IT IS BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN SUCH A CONSTANT THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE LIFE, IF IT IS THE ARTISTRY AND CREATIVITY THAT SPARKED MY OWN LONG AGO, IF IT IS BECAUSE OF THE MESSAGE IN HIS SONGS MOLDED MY BELIEFS ON SO MANY LEVELS, OR IF IT MAKES ME QUESTION MY OWN MORTALITY, BUT IT HAS LEFT ME IN CONFUSION AND AWE. THERE ARE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFETIME THAT EFFECT THE PERSON YOU ARE FOR THE BETTER, WHETHER IT BE BELIEFS, STRENGTH OR ACCEPTANCE, EVEN IF YOU DID NOT PERSONALLY KNOW THEM. MICHAEL WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE FOR ME. EVEN THOUGH, YES HE WAS JUST A MAN, HE WAS AN INCREDIBLE MAN, WITH THE RIGHT VIEW ON HOW THE WORLD SHOULD BE. HE WAS MISUNDERSTOOD A LOT BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO THAN JUDGE, BUT HE WAS A GENIUS, WILL ALWAYS BE A LEGEND AND WILL ALWAYS BE A POWERFUL INFLUENCE ON ME AND MY LIFE. I HOPE HE FINALLY REACHES SOME SORT OF PEACE WITHIN HIMSELF ON HIS NEXT JOURNEY.

For those who are complaining about the money spent for his memorial:

How many people struggling to make ends meet got some extra hours in their paycheck during this thing?

Stop Crying!

Mi   July 9th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

No amount of media coverage will be sufficient for the ultimate music legend Michael Jackson!
This universe will forever miss the type of music and dance that MJ delivered.
The entire farewell show was touching. I expected a lot more celebrities to join but looks like most want to play safe by not showing their support openly. It is sad to see so many celebrities not ready to openly show their support to MJ.
Any one of them could fall into a similar trap (wrong accusations) anytime anywhere.... would they expect help and sympathy then? something to think about.....

Mi   July 9th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

We love your Michael <3
May your soul rest in PEACE which you so deserve!
Wish your family and children the strength to move on and live a normal life!
God Bless!

I'm sorry for his passing...Maybe now the world will understand the disease of Lupus. I have lived with it for the last 34 years and no one has ever known the pain and suffering I have gone through. Not being able to be in the sun...wearing gloves in the summer...no sleep..I could go and on but i won't. I have not had a pain free day since 1976. At least now maybe the media will do more to make people aware of how hard it is living with daily health problems.

Gibbs   July 10th, 2009 8:00 am ET

Let the man rest!!! This is more of a publicity stunt than anything else!

Gibbs   July 10th, 2009 8:24 am ET

Will it actually be a final farewell or are we going to be hearing about this for years to come?

mic   July 11th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

I am not sure why but no one seems to know much about how MJ's kids were raised if he was so addicted to prescription medications that would sedate him etc. Why hasn't there been more information from the longtime nanny, Grace? She was said to be the nanny from birth of Prince Michael and so why isn't there more information coming forth from her? Or was she one of the people that helped him get his drugs and administer them? I would like to know more about her and what she thinks was going in over the last several years.

Susan   July 11th, 2009 6:45 pm ET

Hello,

Is anyone paying attention to Michael Jackson's father? He may have the same addiction problem his son allegedly had. His speech is slurry. You can hardly understand him. He looks out of it. I don't trust him!

Thanks. Susan

My heart is heavy with sadness. It hurts to know that we will never get to hear a new song or watch a new video. Whatever the circumstances, whatever the cause, there is one thing that resonates amongst us all…Michael is in a better place, a place he so desperately wanted and wished for, a place where his beautiful, young face will remain just that, beautiful and young. We will all grow old, we will all watch as life passes us by and we will always see his ageless face staring back from the magazine pages that we are clinging to now. He will remain youthful and innocent forever, something that we all try to accomplish, but fail. Some may call it Heaven, some say it’s amongst the stars, some say it doesn’t exist at all, but there is a place we all dream of. It’s a place full of peace and love, hope and strength, where anything can happen. To Michael it was Neverland and we shouldn’t doubt for a second that he is indeed seated there, on the highest cloud, protecting all who he cherished so deeply.

Any human with a soul cannot look at him the same after watching his daughter’s bravery, speaking about her “Daddy.” She cast a new light upon her father’s memory. Far too many people are overlooking that he was a father, clearly raising his children as proper and shielding them from the world that so badly hurt him. In the end we must think, How would we feel? The pain, I can only imagine. The emptiness, I hope I never feel. Three beautiful children are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. The grieving they will endure is unfathomable. We need to give them peace, leave them alone, let them grow and allow them to decide how their father should be remembered. To have the strength to stand in front of millions just to say he was the best father, that is admirable. Though I believe her words came from the deepest place in her heart, I also believe that she began a legacy in that moment and she knew it. It’s a legacy that will not stand for manipulation of her father’s character, that is not afraid to say, Stop, when it’s too much. Sadly though, he may have raised his children that way because he knew the dangerous risk of having too open of a heart, not being able to say, No. And it leaves us to wonder, Maybe if he just worried about himself and not pleasing everyone else, would he still be here? That, we will never know…

My prayers are for his close family and friends, his sibling and his mother. My deepest prayers and sympathy are for his children. And I pray that maybe now his spirit will find that unearthly peace he deserves. His soul will live on in his children and their children. His music will live on in us, his fans. His feats will live on in history. His truth will rest upon enemies. His memories we will cherish forever. So many talk about a comeback, but for his fans, there was no need for one. For us, he never went away.

Rest in Peace, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop.
