Morning Express viewers weigh in on Palin's resignation

Posted: 12:52 PM ET

TV/Web Producer Kate

With 18 months left to serve in her term as Alaska governor, Sarah Palin announced on Friday that she would step down from her post, in order to serve what she cryptically referred to as a "higher calling."

Palin will step down as governor of Alaska this month.
Palin will step down as governor of Alaska this month.

It remains to be seen whether Palin's 'calling' will consist of a bid for President in 2012. Palin explained that she is resigning because she doesn't think it would be good for Alaska if she served her last 18 months as a lame duck.

Critics of Palin's decision say that whatever her reasons for resigning, walking away from her responsibilities as an elected official is a questionable move, at best.

We asked Morning Express viewers for their take on Palin's resignation. Below are a selection of their responses, some of which have been edited for length and clarity.

- I certainly would not vote for someone who quits on her voters because she has a "higher calling." Thank goodness she is not our VP ... would she leave that post for Hollywood? If the media attention is too much, then politics is not for you, Sarah. Maybe Rush can give her a job. – Joanie in Peoria, Illinois

- I think she should've stayed in office cause she might have a better chance at a nomination for president.

- Sarah Palin makes very intentional moves, this is what she needed to do in order to clear a path & set the stage for what will be a very public next year!

- I think Gov. Palin resigned due to all the negative media coverage of her and her family. She has been repeatedly attacked by the Democrats and supported very little by her own party. – Randy in Alpharetta, Georgia

- I bet a baby with special needs is harder than she thought. – Julie

- I think Palin should move to South Carolina and replace Gov. Sanford so he can move on with his life. – Concerned resident of South Carolina

- Regarding Palin – Sounds like a great Presidential candidate, the people vote her in and then she quits before serving her term. – Matt in North Carolina

- Governor Palin could have made a substantial presidential run, but people won't vote for a quitter, so I hope her reasons are for it are adequate.

- I am tired of hearing about Palin, an inexperienced politician who was LUCKY to be chosen to represent Alaska & only received notoriety by her looks. – MiMi

- She is a quitter. She was elected to be the governor of Alaska and she is quitting. Guess that is better then quitting as vice president.

- I don't care why she quit but I'm sure this is the end of her political career. I won't vote for someone who might quit.

- Palin's resignation, on the surface, is merely a demand for attention. Beyond this shallow pursuit of her 'higher calling', she's relying on what?

- I am THRILLED that Palin is leaving office! Hopefully, the execution of wolves will stop with her out of control!

- It's a sad day for this country when we need people like her.

- I wish people would leave Sarah Palin alone. She said she was leaving for a higher calling. Being a mother is often referred to as a higher calling, maybe she just wants to be more hands on with her kids. – Connie in Frisco, Texas

- Palin quitting early is a BAD MOVE. If she quits Governor how can the people trust a quitter to be elected as a President?! - Brian in Ft. Myers, Florida

- Palin flying the coop just makes me more comfortable that there's less of a chance she could ever get into the white house! – J Roach in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania

- Palin rocks! Dems are just afraid of her! – Kathy in Virginia

- Sarah Palin is too much of a freak show for America to trust. – Stuart in Iowa

- I think Sarah Palin realized she should quit now instead of continuously embarrassing herself as she is not a great speaker.

- Sarah Palin has done yet another silly thing that makes her even more unelectable at the national level! – Martha in Kentucky

- I think if Gov. Palin felt it was time to go then she did the right thing and the Dems should just back off and leave her alone.

- Something more has to be brewing for her to just quit like that ... there will probably be a scandal soon.

- I can't understand why someone who wants to be considered for national office would quit in the middle? Would she have quit if VP job was too hard?

- Sarah P. is a very smart lady. I support her decision. – Vic in Lubbock, Texas

- Sarah Palin should run as a third party. Enough of the republicans and the democrats voting as a block instead of what is in the interest of the American people. – Katie in Wild Rose, Wisconsin

- I hope Sarah Palin is running our country in the future.

- I think that this another publicity stunt. She wants to keep her name out there. – Juanita in Arkansas

- Palin once again showed poor judgment. Why not finish what you started? Would she quit again if elected to another office? Who knows. – Cathy

- I think we need to remember that she is human and she should know what's best for her and her family and life.

- Good! I'm glad she's leaving office. I'll bet it has to do with personal family reasons. Hopefully she'll disappear into obscurity! – Dee in Dover, Delaware

- What happens if she's elected President in 2012 and then when she's a lame duck in 2016 – is she going to just walk away then? No one likes a quitter. She was elected Governor for a full term. Not just elected Governor until she is no longer interested in it or she feels she has something better to do. - D.L. in Crescent City, Florida

It's a shame that a small group of Czarist/ leftist sympathizers can run off any truly gifted politician. I am a registered Democrat but haven't voted for a Democrat for several elections.

By carefully examing the last six months and the free-for-all spending of the Democrats, one can easily see the so-called Party of the People is really a party intent on making everyone subservient to a radical government. It's unfortunate that voices like Sarah Palin won't be speaking against such destructive policies.

Bravo Sarah Palin this country need more people like you. You are putting your family before anything else and this is what this country was built on (Family). I think that by doing this she is showing strength in her beliefs and conviction. Personally I think all these left wings need to step back and take a look in the mirror. You Sarah Palin would make a fine President and the women of this country need to get behind you and support you as I and my husband do. Bravo!

First, Congratulations to our Robin for being given the honor of being one of the anchors at HLN to cover the Jackson Memorial at the Los Angeles' Staples Center ! A.J. Hammer and Jane Velez-Mitchell will also share the duties with the HLN coverage. That's our girl Robin . . . you can be assured that this family as well as all of Robin's regular viewers will be watching her and HLN as the day's events unfold ! Yes, it was shocking and surprising upon learning of Sarah Palin's resigning as Alaska governor on Friday, July 3rd ! Why is it that it seems that all major, late-breaking news or announcements always happen to occur when we as Americans are celebrating our holidays? Whether it's politically motivated or something like a North Korean missile incident, it's like clockwork with the planning . . . go figure !! Governor Palin has been getting a bad rap from the media ever since she lost out as becoming our Vice President (or something trivial as not appearing at a prominent social event); but, the icing on the cake really melted when David Letterman used Governor Palin and her family in a rude, tasteless joke on his nighttime talk show! The tables were turned as not everyone was amused by his antics: the majority sided with Governor Palin ! We feel strongly that Governor Palin is setting all her ducks in a row to prepare for the 2012 presidential nomination ! Best of luck to her in whatever she decides to do–she is a very smart and gutsy lady who can handle whatever is on her agenda ! Please take care while in Los Angeles, Robin !! We love ya, Ohio girl . . . Robin's Follies !!!!

Sarah Palin saying that she is not a quitter, also makes her a lier.

Beverly   July 7th, 2009 9:16 am ET

Sarah Palin has reasons for stepping down, let the whole thing be at rest. Our country has more pressing problems right now!

Pammie   July 7th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Mrs. Palin is doing what she should have done years ago - if, in fact, she is going to focus on her family. She was in over her head - thank God she is not our vice-president!

Furman Hanna   July 7th, 2009 9:28 am ET

I Love Sarah Palin, she has always been "for real" and "in your face" with her values, which I like. She is doing the best thing for politics and her family, her standing out so mutch, be it her pretty face or her ideals, was causing problems for her, i believe. Anyway, I know that this will not be the last of I hear of her, she's just getting started, go Palin!

Don Huggins   July 7th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Another typical Republican pullout. Create a situation, Don't get their own way, go on news peograms, blame everyone but the person they see in the mirror, quit, and then become a divisive factor within their own supporters.

S. Gomez   July 8th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Sarah Palin reminds me of Carrie Prejean (the ousted California queen) that they both blame everybody else for everything gone wrong in their lives but themselves.
Palin does deserve a break from the whole thing, I say give her a one-way ticket on the next Space Shuttle out of here.
I wish this woman would keep out of sight and out of mind once and for all.

Steve Gomez   July 8th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Sarah Palin is not even qualified to run an ant farm.

Furman Hanna   July 8th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

O.K. Democrats, Look what your party's already gotten us into. Bail out big companies, tax and faze out the "little" man. What has our country become Herb,Don?

Phil   July 8th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

I'm sorry, but I can't take this anymore. This woman is an absolute political nightmare and is fifty times less intelligent than even George W, which speaks volumes. How anyone can be entertaining this woman can, could, or will run for president is almost as preposterous as saying I can make a diamond out of a charcoal briquet. Anyone who thinks that she can should look up the word reality and invest some time and dedication to understanding the meaning of that word.

Furman Hanna   July 8th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Oh, Pammie please. Get a life.

Dennis   July 9th, 2009 7:23 am ET

Hopefully this is her way of preparing for a possible spread in playboy

Zeev   July 9th, 2009 9:13 am ET

I just dont think she was ready to be thrust out into the National Presidential stage or spotlight. The pressure of media scrutiny is usally something most politicians have years to grow a thick skin for. I think leaving her post early, shows the strain this has put on her family and her life. Although I dont agree with her politics, I think she is a person of character who is trying to be sincere in an unsincincere business.

Mi   July 9th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

I am glad Sarah Palin quit her job so that someone more capable can actually help and govern the people of Alaska!

In my opinion, Sarah should stay home with her kids and spend the time to nuture and care for them. I feel sorry for her husband and kids because she is on the 'drama queen' wagon and it's about time she realized that her place is at home until the kids are old enough to be on their own. She can then pursue whatever she chooses!

Herb   July 9th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Hanna I am a republican and simply believe in personal responsibility. Quitting a job and saying I'm no quitter is a lie. Blaming others for my problems is a way of making me not responsible for them. You are really not a very good republican as Sarah is not. Anyone can make anything come out of their mouth (or type on a key board) however one is as one does and thats the way it is.

I don't think Don is right about republicans. He could have left that out and he would have been right. Its human nature to blame others for our own short comings no matter what our political views are.

Furman Hanna   July 9th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Oh Phil. Your intelligence speaks volumes. Especially the "big" words you have chosen. I give up...

Annie Renolds   July 13th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Personally, I am thrilled she's realized that politics are WAY over her head regardless of what capacity or level. To think she was a mere heartbeat away from the presidency, still makes me ill. The woman may be lovely, but her ego is as big as the state she governed. She make a public display of her poor daughter, Bristol, her small baby and 'snowmobile Bob' her husband to do nothing but try to further her own selfish ambitions. Her folksy "charm" was as endearing as a tick bite. It might work for Alaska, but on a national and worldwide level, this woman could have singlehandedly destroyed any credibility this country had left. Compared to Palin, even 'W' sounded smart. A quitter is a quitter. Hopefully, she'll fade away into a lovely Alaskan sunset.

Dave in N.C.   July 13th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

I guess that once David Letterman apologized for his jokes, the television news networks were no longer doing stories on Sarah Palin, so she had to come up with something to get back on TV. She is definitely abusing her 15 minutes. I'm amazed that people ever took and still take her seriously as a presidential candidate. If she actually is elected president, I can see her quitting the instant Fox offers her a chance to star in a reality TV series with Danny Bonaduce and Screech from Saved By The Bell.

Jim Welch   July 16th, 2009 9:18 am ET

This is so sad that the people of this once great nation speaks out so hateful about something like this. People listen, you have the right to quit any job you have and stop working or look for something else to do. So for we still do have this freedom to do this. Palin quit her job, so what. I have done this same thing in the past also. All of you that are against her, how about turning in your name so we can critisize you as well. Get a grip people and stop downing every one except self. You are not perfect neither.

Darlene in Texas   July 16th, 2009 9:39 am ET
