South Carolina governor caught in affair

Posted: 06:42 AM ET

TV-Web Producer Kate

Last week, South Carolina governor Mark Sanford disappeared after a tough session in the state legislature. His constituency was alarmed by his disappearance, and his staff released a message saying that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford chokes up on Wednesday as he admits to having an affair.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford chokes up on Wednesday as he admits to having an affair.

Then, Gov. Sanford's car was spotted at the airport in Columbia, South Carolina.

The whole caper came tumbling in when the governor was spotted at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The governor admitted that, in fact, he had been in Argentina, visiting his mistress. See a timeline of Sanford's activities.

Sanford held a news conference in Columbia, South Carolina, where he announced his resignation as head of the Republican Governor's Association.

Sanford also addressed how he and his wife were handling the situation.

Sanford had been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, after his current second consecutive term as governor ends.

What do you think? Have political sex scandals gone too far?

Is this behavior befitting of a governor? What should Sanford's next step be? Share your views in the comments field below.

I am a big fan of Robin and her morning report. Regarding the S.C. governor, I believe the US media is playing to sexual interest while trying to pose as protectors of public morality. If I were the man, I would tell the media it's not their business, and I would probably swear a blue streak at nosy reporters. America is known as the most sexually repressed nation because of all this 17th century condemnation of people's sex lives. This is the the 21st century's cersion of the puritan stocks or pillories. God created us with a sexual urge, so why do we pretend it's such a bad thing? If you want to make the world better, then let's promote birth control, so that peoples' sex lives don't result in unwanted and uncared-for babies.

Sanford cared more about his erection than his election. It is time for him to "take a hike" for real!

I did not vote for Gov. Sanford, however, my heart goes out to his wife and son's. In my opinion, his wife should divorce him, if a man cheat's once, he'll cheat again. In my opinion, he should RESIGN now!!! Betty from South Carolina

Regardless of the reason, the governor abandoned his position for a week by failing to transfer his powers to the lieutenant governor and by failing to be in contact with his office. This, it seems to me, is reason to remove him from office. Just try disappearing from your job for a week and see if you still have it when you show up again.

Terri   June 25th, 2009 7:15 am ET

I am sick and tired of the politicians in this country that think they can do whatever they want, with no consideration to others, especially their families. It seems they are more swayed and controlled by their 'pants" than commitment to family and country. If I were his wife and kids no way would I have been standing by his side either. I can only imagine how ashamed the families are.

Carol Milham   June 25th, 2009 7:18 am ET

The affair is bad enough for his family. The problem that infuriated me was when the Lt. Govenor said HE did not know where he was. What if there was a crisis in his state? Obviously being govenor of his state came 2nd to his love life. That's sad. Then get out and let someone take your place that DOES care about the state of SC. Shame on you, for not letting the Lt. Govenor know that you were out of the country. you didn't have to tell him why. JMO

I think the true hero here is Mrs Sanford, who held it together for her children and for the state of South Carolina, for so long. My hat is off to her.

Marilyn   June 25th, 2009 7:27 am ET

His personal life is no ones business but his wife's. Any time spent on the tax payers clock and funds spent for personal use he needs to answer to publicly. But personal emails about his affair should not be aired.

Jennifer K   June 25th, 2009 7:27 am ET

As long as state/government funds weren't used, it is none of our business. This is a christian based society, so any act that is not christian the person is judged. Seems he is doing the best he can for the state. What makes the leaders of the United States different from any other country. Was is it not France that had a mistress? This is just frivilous and gossip. Let the family take care of its own business and make the Gov. continue the job he was voted in for.

oH BOO HOO, i HAD MY FUN AND NOW I GET TO WHINE ABOUT IT..IF I WAS HIS WIFE, CAROLINA WOULDNT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT RUNNING HIM OFF, i WOULD HAVE DONE THAT THE MINUTE HE OPENED HIS MOUTH, BY THE TIME HE COULD EVEN THINK ABOUT CURVY HIPS AND TAN LINES, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN PACKED AND PROBABLY LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LIVE SOMEPLACE ALONG THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL....

LINDA CREAMER   June 25th, 2009 7:36 am ET

WITH THE ATTITUDE HIS WIFE HAS, I WOULD VENTURE TO SAY THEIR MARRIAGE WAS OVER ALREADY. SHE WAS TOO QUICK TO REACT WITH A FORGIVE ALL MESSAGE....SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE

James Ostraco   June 25th, 2009 7:36 am ET

I think his affair should be personal, not left up to the worlds opinon. But if he used taxpayers money for those trips, we should send him on one more, to JAIL!

Shawn   June 25th, 2009 7:47 am ET

What he did was wrong but he apologized, lets move on. Give the guy a break. We are all human and we have all done things that we regret. He should worry less about apologizing to the nation and more about apologizing to his wife and family.

Not that it is any of our business anyway.

Ann   June 25th, 2009 7:47 am ET

The “I've spent the last five days crying in Argentina," said Sanford." is a comment I might welcome from a friend, or relative, or even a lover – if directed to me in an intimate, or counseling, climate. However, any Government power – President or Governor – that has an affair that interrupts the governance of his people – should resign. There are two separate issues here – they are intertwined – but clearly separate. Sanford's yearlong unfaithfulness to his wife and family, is not the public's or the legislature's concern in and of itself. However, the second point is that this affair bled out into the body of South Carolinians. An official that would abdicate his position, and run off to Argentina to be with his mistress, leaving the legislature, the people, and the First Family of South Carolina to speculate and wonder why he left with no itinerary, no method of reaching out to him, no definitive person in control – is, on one hand, immature and negligent; and on the other hand, unfaithful to the people he has sworn to serve. I do not want to be represented by anyone who would allow an affair to interfere with the carrying out of the office to which he has been elected. Sanford should resign with the little dignity he has intact. Moreover, he should allow South Carolina the same. There is quite enough national attention on this state already, without Sanford providing late night entertainment. BTW, as another responder tried to equate Sanford and Clinton, remember that Clinton's indiscretion did not cause him to leave his job.

kim   June 25th, 2009 7:49 am ET

I am a south carolinian, and i feel that our govener deserves his privacy with this issue. He is human, and i feel this situation should be dealt with between him and his wife.As a person,he is a decent man, and he needs to be supported in the matter. All marriages have problems, and who are we to judge him,we are not god.

James Ostraco   June 25th, 2009 7:53 am ET

I really dont care if the govenor explodes! (the curve of your hips!)AHHHHHHHHHHHHH I only watch cause the asian anchor is very good, the sports guys also top shelf,Robins personality is allowed to shine thru alittle buy your producers,(and shes just plain BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!! And the weather guy is NUTS!!! WE love him and you should give him more money!!!!!!!!!! But the governor, put him on an island with Perze Hilton and tell em both to have a coke and a smile and S___ T__ F___ U_!

Viviana   June 25th, 2009 7:55 am ET

The Governor should be impeached. A few years ago President Bill Clinton was impeached by a republican led commission, not necessarily because he had an affair, but because he lied about it. The republicans said he failed to demonstrate true family values. So, I believe that what's good for the goose is good for the gander. He needs to be removed as Governor. He lied; he cheated and may have misappropriated funds. I’d say that qualifies as lacking family values.

Travelinpants   June 25th, 2009 7:57 am ET

This guy should be ashamed as he obviously is but because they have been separated for a couple of weeks and he took the time during this separation to leave and go see this adulterous woman, he may want to search his heart for the truth.

He may be like many many men and that is, he wants to spend the next 20 years of his life married to someone else. If this is the case, he should do his wife a favor and not drag this and their famiily through the public eye much longer and just file for divorce.

If he truly wants his marriage to work, he really has to publicly denounce this woman by name mind you, this relationship and truly be the Christian man he wants to be and forsake all others and cling to his wife. If he wants to desire his wife again he will have to work at it!!!

Jammie   June 25th, 2009 8:02 am ET

Let him finish what he started as governor, it would not be fair to someone else to fix his mistakes in South Carolina.

CJ Skremsky   June 25th, 2009 8:03 am ET

South Carolina Gov. Sanford I feel deserves to be forgiven.
He has done so much good for SC and I admired him for standing up and not wanting to take the economic stimulus money's. I wish more would do that and save us working people from this president and his outrageous spending spree at our expense.

Thank you so much Robin
CJ

judi schweiger   June 25th, 2009 8:04 am ET

As a resident of South Carolina, I am appalled and saddened by what he did to his wife and children.

He says he is at the same level of SC as the president is of the US.
Let's not forget how the republicans tried to crucify Bill Clinton.

He should resign as governor. Not because he had the affair, which is bad enough, but for being incommunicado for 5 days. You just don't go off the leave the government for five days for your own selfish needs. Do we really want someone using this kind of judgment running the State of SC?

Randy G.   June 25th, 2009 8:04 am ET

This should be an issue between his family, preacher and the state he represents. Be careful of the double standard. Remember Bill's romp in the White house and Ted Kennedy's numerous indescretions. Nobody is perfect. Thanks for waking me up in the morning Robyn! Keep up the good work. By the way its my birthday today, 29 yrs old!

James Francis   June 25th, 2009 8:07 am ET

Jayne RIchards   June 25th, 2009 8:12 am ET

I believe the Governor should not step down from his job. He is obviously remourseful for doing this to himself as well as the people who trust and care for him.

It is getting more difficult to find perfect people. Not to excuse his behavior but he deserves our support.

There are more important issues in our world to focus on. Let the man heal and move on.

Ray Rogers   June 25th, 2009 8:13 am ET

Well, Sanford's affair is just a continuation of how most of our politicians live their lives. Its a soap opera world out there. But come on already! If he wants to run around on his wife its his business between him and his wife. Why is it all this hanky-panky stuff has to be drawn out into the public eye? My guess is this little excursion will just make him more popular in the long run and put him in the white house. Or from his wife's point of view ____ in his grave.

Beth frm Maryland   June 25th, 2009 8:17 am ET

He's unfaithful to his wife, how can he posible keep promises he made to his constituents?

Sinclair   June 25th, 2009 8:21 am ET

Mr. Sanford is just another man. When the preasure of life hits you, and there is someone willing to listen to what you have to say just because they care it hard to say no. When two people are sharing the same type of feelings , and are atthe same level they have something in common. they share information and began to communicate on the same level. This is no different from any other man or woman thay meet, and statr to have strong feelings for eath other. When the two of them bond it's hard to stay apart. Mr. Sanford has fallen in LOVE with a woman that inturn has fallen in Love with him. This is not something that happens to people everyday. When it does and both people have that strong bond it's hard to break. I think He will move on to his new relationship, and still have ties with his children. His job at this point is seondary, and he is going to follow his heart, even if it dosn't last. His wife is going to have to move on raise the family with his contact and accept the situation. The Misstress has who has the same situation has to go through the same thing so the two of them can be together. It's now a give and take situation for them and what type of relationship they want to have. Mr. Sanford and his will have decide what he wants to do with his new relationship.
I think he should leave his job becaus he wants to. I think he should follow his heart, to complete his feeling, raise his children, and have a life himself, because he has too.
It seems that some peopel look for things to make themselves happy or what they feel will at the time, and don't consider the consequences or effect it may have on others. Stress causes people to look at others that will releave the stress they are under. People look for a avenue to release stress, and sometimes it comes in the form of a relationship. Just because your in a high profile position you are not excempt from the fact that the divorce rate is over 50%, hith a high profile there is more contact with people that have issues in common. This not a political movement, but one of the heart.

Kat   June 25th, 2009 8:23 am ET

He should be booted ASAP. Refusing stimulus money and now this? PATHETIC.

DM1982   June 25th, 2009 8:24 am ET

I understand that this potentially shows a issue with morality for someone with such a important job... If he was capable of this then what other bad decisions may he make...

I see he is resigning from his post at the RGA but in most any other job in the country a affair does not constitute a reason for losing ones job (in the military a affair is grounds for punishment). At least he was having an affair with a woman, a lot different than most Republicans sex scandals.

Todd   June 25th, 2009 8:25 am ET

This guy is nuts!! In the least, he should be compelled to have a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to serve as Governor.

Christopher Gray   June 25th, 2009 8:26 am ET

The Governor is just a man that is doing what all politicians have done in the past and will probably do in the future. I am so tired of hearing the gossip about these people, why don't we pay attention to the problems at hand like jobs and the economy or maybe N. Korea and Iran?

The governor mentioned crying in Argentina for 5 days. Not to make light of this situation, but it reminded me of the song entitled "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" which is the best-known song from the 1978 musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. I guess a lot of folks will not be crying for him.

Robin shame shame shame as a South Carolinian I am embarrased of the Gov actions. Gov Sanford needs to be removed from all roles responsibility he left the state of SC Vulnerable for those days he went missing what governor who was sworn to have the constiuentd best interest at heart does this.GOv sanford should be embarrased of his actions.

Dave   June 25th, 2009 8:51 am ET

I'm so tired of political hypocrisy. What people do in their personal lives is their own business. But when they criticize (read: impeach) others for the same behavior that they practice, that's when my hackles really stand up.

Cindy   June 25th, 2009 9:00 am ET

I don't care if Sanford had an affair or not, as long as it doesn't affect his
ability to perform his job. I think leaving the state, much less the country, and not letting anybody know where he was going shows he can't perform his job and have an affair too. If he wanted to fly to Argentina for vacation for whatever purpose on his own dime fine, but he still has a responsbility to the state of SC to make sure all the bases are covered while he is gone.

Thanks, Robin. Love your show!

If an individual worked at let's say Home Depot, his/her indiscretions would typically not be an issue, unless they impacted his/her performance at work directly. So maybe I'm out in left field, but why would politicians be any different. We elect and pay them to perform at running Federal, State, and local government. We should hold these truths to be self evident for our religious leaders..... Not our politicians – get real

The governor need to resign. The affair is none of out business, that is between him and his family. the reason he needs to resign is because he left the country with out letting the lt.gov. know in the event of an emengerency. He has defrauted the people in SC most likely used their tax money that they really need for his own pleasures. He has put himself above everyone elses needs he is a very selfish man who should not be allowed to have anything to do with politics.

Governor, what does having an affair, have to do with his job? as long as he can keep his mind on business. the public has thier nose to far in everyones business, look at poor Jon & Kate it's quite plain to see that Kate loves Jon, and he probabl;y doesn't know how he feels, because of all the crap they've been through, alot of people are cheated on, it is a personal thing not public info. don't we all have enought going on in our own lifes, not to interfer in someone else'
personal business. cheating is the ultramate slap in the face for
the spouce, does it need to be made public.

Anthony Ross   June 25th, 2009 9:44 am ET

I know this because I'm argentinean and the only regret I have since I left Argentinean it's leaving behind the most beautiful ladies on this planet. As long as he was not using taxpayers money to have his affair, he should be allowed to keep his job. The voters will be able to decide one way or another if he should continue to be the governor of South Carolina when his term ends.

PS: Please pick a better blouse for Robin to wear in the future.

Leonie   June 25th, 2009 10:03 am ET

Can HLN please spare us the contents of the emails between Gov. Sanford and his erstwhile mistress? In my opinion, this is where "news" coverage crosses the line. There is a difference between reporting substantive information that impacts the lives of viewers and sharing titillating details that appeal to our lowest instincts. There's a difference between reporting that a mudfight took place and throwing mud on your audience. After I read those alleged "passionate, steamy" emails on screen, I wanted to take a shower. I will turn off the TV in the future as soon as any of those "emails" are displayed on the screen.

Shirley Rodrigues   June 25th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Governor Sanford has joined the ranks of "unfaithful husbands", particularly those husbands who are in public service. It just makes the taxpayer wonder how much more is really going on among those in public service that we DON'T hear or know about.

If you want to cheat, if that is one's moral level, then do so, but don't use our money to wine and dine (and give chocolates to) their "treats on the side".

Also, the betrayed wife standing with her husband in news conferences, excusing his behavior, is getting somewhat laughable. Any woman, so betrayed, with brains in her head, would tell her jerk husband, "stand there alone, fool, and on your way out of the house, remember how good you had it all those years we worked together, while you played elsewhere".

Angela   June 25th, 2009 10:10 am ET

Governor Sanford's press conference was arrogant and selfish. He gave the people of SC very personal information that needed to stay within his family circle. What he did NOT address in his press conference was the fact that he left SC without a leader for his selfish act. For this disregard and disrespect for the people of SC, he should resign. Thank God we did not have a tragic situation arise in his absence.

Debbie   June 25th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Someone needs to give robin a printout of sanford's quite beautifully wriiten messages to his mistress and give her 15 min. in the restroom until she gets over her obsession with this bull being sensationalized when there is real news to tell. or get her one of those new little Trogan things for women. I was going to say she had a beatiful blouse on today, but who knows how her undies are. When it is taken care of, I will goback to watching my favorite news channel that I usually keep on day and night! Everyone who reads his personal messages, as robin said she did, BLUSH!!! What the hell has happened to us that you think that is what we are fed for the day!

I think we, as a people have gone too far!! Way farther than Sanford to think that any public figure is owned by us!! Their genetalia, private messages and most intimate moments and utterings. I is a sick little vouguistic thing now that frankly makes me sick. I heard one when it came on this morning, but would never read another, howerver beautifully wriiten they were. And to make fun of him the way the media is doing is aggregious!! If you have no personal moments you would prefer were private, keep reading them. Maybe there is something in them that you can learn and maybe find a little "spark" for yourself somewhere so you can get or write your own messages! Those who have no mistakes or shortcomings, read and listen to EVERY DAMN WORD AND READ EVERY DAMN LETTER!! I

Vikki   June 25th, 2009 10:40 am ET

I have no sympathy for Sanford and he should respectully as Governor. This affair like any other affair requires lying, covering up and deceit. It's enhanced since this affair involved a state official and required travel out of the country. Meaning, it was not an accident, but a clear decision on Sanford's part. His statement he made indicating he cried for 5 days in Argentina is laughable. What about the days his wife was upset and possibly cried? She apparently realized Sanford was making no effort to stop the affair and work on his marriage, so she requested he leave. Sanford has given his wife reason to cry for over a year. Now she has to contend with the emails and details of the affair. More tears. His sons, possibly not knowing the details of why Mom & Dad are not together, will probably definitely hear it now. More tears. Sanford needs to suck it up and live what his actions, and get out of office.

Leeann   June 25th, 2009 11:41 am ET

The issue of the extra-marital affair is between Sanford and his wife. But the issue of the office Sanford holds is between him and the people in the state of South Carolina. I have met many people from the state. They are kind, generous and deserve a governer they can depend on. So people of South Carolina go get the governer you deserve. Quick, before the one you got goes missing again.

Robin, you were a true picture of grace and loveliness this morning in your lovely emerald-green outfit ! Very beautiful ! Now, to the serious business of the day !! Yes, Governor Mark Sanford did wrong in his misguided actions . . . but why is the media concentrating so much on this one individual ? Governor Sanford is not the first politician–nor will he be the last–to be the subject of late-night talk shows. Our own Louisiana Senator David R. Vitter did not have to go as far as Argentina for his affair: he simply went to a Canal Street brothel house here in New Orleans (which to this day doesn't exist anymore). Our thoughts and prayers are for their wives and families and the hurt, embarrassment that they are feeling–and that will continue to linger for many days to come. Hopefully, this will be a major wake-up call for the weak-minded before wandering into their own Garden of Eden scenario !! Have a Happy Thursday, Robin; we love ya, Ohio Girl . . . Robin's Follies !!!

I believe our elected officials should have the responsibility to act morally, ethically, and professionally. They owe this much to the American people who vote for them, and to the young people in our country who see them in a high ranking position. If we start losing these qualitites in our leaders, no one can expect any more than that from any American citizen.

Jon Phillip Boulton   June 25th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

I have to say this, what do you people want, a good ran government or all the drama. Jon Phillip Boulton Paducah, Ky.

As a Christian, it is not my job to judge. Would I trust him if I was married to him? No, just like I would not trust Clinton, Kennedy or whoever else cheated on their spouse.

Donna E   June 26th, 2009 9:29 am ET

I don't care one bit about the affair–I care that he abandoned his state, and just disappeared, without a word to anyone. And he did that more than once. That is why he should resign, because it's obvious that he doesn't care about the people of his state, just his own power. What an arrogant pig he is-he's only sorry that he got caught, not because he did it in the first place. He needs to resign, today. What is it about men and power, anyway? Why is it that when they become CEO's, prominent government figures, or religious icons, etc, that they think they can do all these ridiculous things, like have affairs or ransack their companies and clients finances, and NOT think they will get caught?? What do they think, that they are invisible??? That they are above the law?? You never see powerful women do stupid things like this!! If the gov official is male, and good looking, you can just about place your bet, using all your money!, on the fact he is doing something slimey.

Kathy   June 26th, 2009 9:54 am ET

I think he should resign not because he had an affair but because he was so 'holy-er than thou' when Clinton was caught in a sexual scandal. Heck Clinton never was caught with 'his pants down' (if you know what I mean) and he surely did not leave the office to travel out of the country to see his mistress – leaving his office without someone in charge.

Republicans are so quick to point the finger but not so quick to apply the same rules to ourselves.

Julie   June 26th, 2009 11:59 am ET

HELLO!!! Would all of you negative people wake up and smell the coffee. This is a human being! As are all of the rest of us. Do humans NOT make mistakes? And also remember, there is always two sides to every story. Maybe things weren't so good at home? Stress at the office? Who are we to pass judgement. I'm sure all of you that are condemning this HUMAN BEING have NEVER made a mistake? You are perfect? Those who live in glass houses... I do agree that he should have told someone where he was going in the event of an emergency, but leave his private life as private. How would you like others airing your dirty laundry? What happens between him and his wife should stay between him and his wife. His private life is NOT the public's business. Having an affair does not mean he can't make business decisions. What would Jesus do? Crucify him as the majority of you are doing? You should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

Beverly   June 28th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

Firstly I would like to comment on the statement of Maria Belen Chapur, after reading it I suspect she in fact leaked the email information. Why not name the person that did such a evil thing!
She has the most to gain by the leak.

Secondly, I am in such utter distain of women like her that feel they have done no wrong, I mean what a statement coming from her…I leave it in the hands of God and then to say it was a evil act to let the truth be known.

Why do they think they have a right to hide the truth of such important matters , hence making everyone's else's life a total lie.

As for the Gov. to hide away over Fathers Day weekend with a mistress and then to lie to his office, yes he should be fired.

He looked so foolish crying and blabbering on. Why don't these men just say a one liner and get off.

Thank God his wife did not stand by his side, yet it would be good if she can take him back, but only if he truly feels sorry and if he wants to end the affair for good, no friendship no nothing.

If they can keep their home together, then more power to him and his wife. God Bless them…

Jerry   June 29th, 2009 8:45 am ET

I understand that Gov. Mark Sanford is planning on paying back a portion of the cost for the trips that may have involved tax payer money. My question is, has anyone looked into New Orleans Mayor Nagin's trip to China for "Economic Development"? Who paid for his wife to accompany him; the tax payers of New Orlaeans?

Jim   June 29th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Jenny – Dump the sucker – He's a lying hypocrite – If he says he cares for you ask yourself what he's done for you lately. If he says he cares ity will be as truthful as his tale of hiking the Appalachian Trail.

His judgement is "Seriously" flawed – You are much better looking, classier and your higher intellect is obvious. He does not deserve you or his kids.

adam girhiny   June 30th, 2009 6:34 am ET

i dont like that other politicans and man himself put a poletical gun towards their spouse in fake illusion towards society that they have a happy family. it's not 1908, and society is not stupid, failed relationships is part of life. society can deal with the truth better than, false love

Vince   June 30th, 2009 6:39 am ET

In no way do I aprove of cheating BUT come on, your the Governor of South Carolina, if you go away...people are going to notice :) What have we learned from this kids? Don't lie & cheat is the answer.

Sherry from Daytona Beach   July 1st, 2009 7:26 am ET

I find that a person who cheats in one area of his/her life, they are more likely to cheat in other areas of their life. And will continue to do so, whether or not they are caught.

anonymous   July 1st, 2009 8:25 am ET

I figure they all have affairs, and I really don't think it is any of my business what they do sexually. They are all self serving motivated which I think is the real problem with politicians !

Tom McComb   July 1st, 2009 8:26 am ET

Gov Sanford: It's outrageous. He's been "preaching morality" and legislating morality in his position, has been vehemently against gay rights, same-sex marriage, etc, effecting other people's private lives, yet has a different standard for his "family values".

Rhonda Gunter   July 1st, 2009 8:29 am ET

In my opinion Mark Sanford should be removed from office. He obviously chose not to honor a commitment to his family, how can he commit to our state. Govenor Sanford spoke at my sons graduation at the Citadel in 2004. His wife and sons were there and he spoke highly of them and family values and committment. He lied then as he lied now.
I cannot afford a romantic get away with my husband, and if Mark Sanford has used government money (MY TAX MONEY) to fund his sexual exploits, I am livid!

James   July 1st, 2009 9:01 am ET

The govenor should be thrown out . He left his post and left no one in charge. If something happened in s.c. no one could have done anything. FIRE THE IDIOT.

ENOUGH OF MIKE JACKSON.

Martha David   July 1st, 2009 9:05 am ET

re: Gov. Sanford

Seems to me that this man has a "compulsion"issue. A compulsion to lie, cheat and if we're patient, he's also divulge that he's passed gas and picked his nose too. Sick of him and his peccadilloes. Send him packing, maybe he'll take the next boat to Argentina!

Mike   July 1st, 2009 9:15 am ET

Hi Robin,
Does anyone remember a guy by the name of Bill Clinton?! A standard could've been established with politicians who do the wrong thing of this nature at that time. It didn't happen! When the highest ranking politician in this country can do it without consequences, we established a standard. What would Mother say?

M Clark   July 1st, 2009 9:47 am ET

If you are willing to hurt your 4 children (and there will be pain there for a long time) over your indiscretions, then I do not trust that you have state's best interests at heart.

Cynthia Nickerson   July 1st, 2009 10:05 am ET

There is a difference between adultery committed by a public official and a private citizen. Aside from the moral issue, Governor Sanford used state resources for private reasons and neglected the job for which he was elected. If he doesn't like the heat, he should have stayed out of the kitchen.

diane   July 1st, 2009 10:22 am ET

This man should not be allowed to stay in office. He dissapeared from his job for a week. Where I work that is called no call, no show and you lose your job after two days.

Tonya   July 1st, 2009 10:44 am ET

Has everyone forgotten that the governor disappeared without giving notice? If a regular person took off and didn't tell their employer, they would be fired. Why should he be any different? The affair is irrelevant.

Mary Page   July 1st, 2009 6:38 pm ET

Govenor Sanford should have learned from past presidents that being an adulterer is OK only if you become president before you are found out! Mary Page Hackberry AZ.

Jerry Dennis   July 2nd, 2009 8:03 am ET

I won't be traveling for the holiday weekend. Instead, I will be watching the news for hourly updates on how many women the governor has been with. The story keeps changing! This should be on the Soap Opera Channel! By the way, if this woman is your "soulmate", then what is your wife? I think that part could have been left out...

Walker Rowe   July 2nd, 2009 8:59 am ET

In other countries adutery commited one time is not even grounds for divorce. Men are surrounded by sex, sex, sex in the movies and TV so it is not surprising they are attracted to all of this exposed flesh. Read feminist writers like Daphne Merkin or even Plato´s Phaedrus. They say marriage would work better if women acknowledged man´s wandering eye. Also, what is Mrs. Sanford´s role in this affair? Maybe she quit sleeping with the governor, gained weight, or perhaps she had a beaux as well. We shoud quit attacking our political leaders for behaving like normal people.

Jan Goodell   July 2nd, 2009 1:28 pm ET

No question about Government Sanford. He should be thrown out of office and right away. He is not fit to be a Governor.

What his wife chooses to do with him is her business not ours.

Jill Awuni   July 2nd, 2009 5:52 pm ET

I really think Stanford is no longer thinking when he confides with a foreign national who used to be a reporter about sensitive matters about the day to day running of the state and elections who knows what else he is telling his 'soul mate'!
The republicans cant tell him to leave office because Stanford perhaps has some dirt on them too. Its time for all hypocrites to clean their closets and live right because theirs is coming soon!
Mark, weeps the "Argentinian tears" not for his wife but for Maria, gosh this man is not worried about the teasing his sons will receive in schools nor his wife amongst her peers, he is weeping on national tv about his sex-love life with another woman. gosh whatever happened to standards! Kick the dog out to Argentina!

David   July 2nd, 2009 7:57 pm ET

If it had been a Democrat, Sanford would be on his soapbox proclaiming moral outrage. Ordinarily, I would say his private life is his business. But his "Family Values" position throws that out the window. He left his wife, he left the state unattended, and now he should leave office!

candyll   July 4th, 2009 10:39 am ET

The minute I heard the governor was missing and then it said he was hiking on the App. Trail, I told my family "whatever". He has a woman with him. I figured his wife knew too because she didn't seem too concerned that he was missing. I feel bad for her and her kids for having to see this plastered all over the world news. I applaud her for trying to forgive but......can you ever forget?

Joe-Anne   July 5th, 2009 9:49 am ET

Isn't it time to hold elected officials to the same standards to which we hold each other? Don't lie. Don't cheat. Laws are appliciable to everyone – no one, no matter how high the office held, is above the law. Nor should politicians' unethical behavior be an example for us to aspire to.

cathy   August 19th, 2009 9:02 am ET

Rob Marciano is the "the bomb.com" hottie weather guy!

Sherry from Daytona Beach   August 31st, 2009 12:00 pm ET

I am just sick of hearing about all these politicians and people in power that have the morals of an alley cat! They all need to get their acts together and think with the brain in their heads above their shoulders.
