President Bush and the 'L word': His legacy!

Posted: 11:27 AM ET

Anchor Robin Meade

Hi everyone. I just finished my interview with President Bush 41 ... he was energetic, charming, endearing, and funny. He was accommodating in that he answered darned near everything I asked.

Robin and President Bush get down to business.
Robin and President Bush get down to business.

Watch for his comments about supreme court nominee Sotomayor, what he thinks about the dreaded "L" word as we put it: his legacy, now that he's 85.

One of the most touching moments was his reaction to a song we played him as our gesture of a gift for his birthday.

He keeps inviting me to the Walker's Point this afternoon after our jump ... to the Bush summer home. What to do? Live shots ... or hang out at Walker's Point!?

How about Live Shots from Walker's Point?

ron   June 12th, 2009 11:44 am ET

I would jump out of a plane with you as well :)

David Hey   June 12th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Hi Robin, I hope the weather cooperates for you. As a long time skydiver, I have one piece of advise for you. Look arounf a lot. You are going to have an incredibly beautiful, totally unobstructed view of the ocean and the surrounding area. Sometime if you’re are out in CA, do a tandem in Monterey, that’s where I jump sometimes and the Monterey Bay area from 18,000 feet is spectacular.

Blue skies Robin!!

must be nice hobb nobb'n w/ the rich and famous oil barons. robin mead are you taking over that man's place who use to go around talking about the filthy rich plantation owners and what they do all day long.

AJ   June 12th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Enjoy the view! George H.W. Bush is a great american and a guy who sets a good example for living life to its fullest. Go hang out at Walker's Point and live a little yourself. :)

Calvin Myrick   June 12th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Hello Robin, I really iike your shows style. On June 02, 2009 about half way of your show as you were going to break, there was a great song that faded out and I haven't been able to find out the artist or the title of the song. The lyrics went something like "A orphan of the strom moved to Houston. to live with that copper colored man???" Would be able to respond with the Title or Artist of that song. I can't get the tune out of my mind! I might not agree with all of CNNs polotics but I love your show and really like the taste of the music played on your show. Keep up the great work. Thanks Calvin Myrick Rockwall, TX calvin@myrick1.com

Ray   June 12th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

You have balls of steel! lol

Good luck and we'll see you Monday.

Bye from NJ

Toni Pugh   June 12th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Who the hell cares about George Bush. Surely there are more important stories out there. A better story of any Bush skydiving would be one where they drop Pres. George W Bush into the middle of Iraq from an airplane. LOL

Old School Vet   June 12th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Never liked his son, but Big Daddy George is a throw back to the days when men where men and men where also gentelmen. A lot of today's pols could learn from him.

Patricia   June 12th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Dreaded "L" word? I thought you meant liberal.

Are you going to ask him anything substantive or important?

Like how he feels now that the Republican Party is lapsing into extremism and hate?

Larry B.   June 12th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

Sure hope Bush's chute doesn't open.

Bill from Austin, Texas   June 12th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

I would go to Walker's Point. Who knows if you will ever get the chance again? It is such a beautiful place and what a host! There is not a finer man alive!

Hi Robin!
Go to Walker's Point. We live in Cape Elizabeth and love to "sightsee" when we go to Kennebunkport. Walker's Point is always our highlight – it is just beautiful! Welcome to Maine – enjoy your time!

Sonic   June 12th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

HHHmmmm.. Robin Meade doing "shots" with an aged former President Bush! Who will get drunk first? You decide.

John   June 12th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

While I may not think much of his son (at all), I've always liked Bush Sr. He's always come across as a class act and decent man, and I hope he enjoys the rest of his days in peace. Well, as much peace as one can have skydiving, anyway... heh

Have fun, and look forward to hearing more!

Arlene Stenstrom   June 12th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Have a Great time Robin!!! And Birthday Wishes to President Bush!!
And if you can't make it for the invite to hang out a Walkers Point...I would be glad to volunteer to take your place!! The Bushes are a great family and it would be a good time, I am sure.

Both Bush are good people. I do not believe they did anything to violate people's trust for their personal interest while in office. There are plenty of presidents who did far less and worse in office. It's too bad that ex-presidents are still not very accessible by any means. Otherwise, I would love to let them know that have acheived immortality with their acts in office; legacy is hardly worth their time thinking about it. They should be at peace knowing everything they did was to for american interest and to secure american way of life. I certainly hope history will be fair in promoting both Bush's ranking from current standing.

Laura Horowitz   June 12th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Hi Robin –

My 9-year-old son is a fan of all things presidential. And he's thrilled because his Uncle Dana is the manager of the airport at Sanford. So we're reading your blog and watching CNN on TV hoping to get a glimpse of Bush 41, Bush 43, and Uncle Dana.

My son says "If you see Uncle Dana, tell him Will from York says Hi!"

Joseph   June 12th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

Hi Robin,
My dad graduated from Yale with George in '48. My dad just celebrated his 92nd. Wait a minute how can George be 85 and my dad be 92...that's a seven year difference.

Two reasons, the Great Depression and WWII.

George was captain of the baseball team and dad was on the rowing team. That generation are the toughest Americans this country has produced. They live for Life...no excuses. Legacy? George will be around for quite a while.

Robert   June 12th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

After successfully skydiving with the former President, by invitation? I'd be doing shots with him WHEREVER he said to! Live Shots, eh! That's an everyday thing. Have an awesome time!!

Aaron Houston   June 12th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Agree with David on the looking around. I've found that you should say aloud "I will look around" about 20 times on the way up, that helps reinforce it in you mind: adrenaline has a way of pushing things out of short term memory.

THE ROCKET   June 12th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

YOU DID AWESOME ROBIN!! GREAT JUMP!

Gloria   June 12th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Great job on the jump!

Eva   June 12th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Way to go Robin! :)

jesse   June 12th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

The guy was easily the most well-intentioned republican president in a long time. Good for him for keeping his lips sealed, we don't need any more gossip.

Grace   June 12th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Way to go ROBIN!!!!!! You’re an inspiration to women. As Mrs. Bush said "you came in as a lady." and I say "as the beautiful lady you are."

Gigi   June 12th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

THANKS ROBIN FOR THE AWESOME INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF MY FAVORITE PRESIDENTS! I AM NEW TO HLN AKA CNN...I AM SO PROUD THAT YOU ARE NOT PICKING SIDES AND YOU ARE BEING FAIR IN WHO YOU TALK TO AND ABOUT. BECAUSE OF THIS I AM FAST BECOMING A FAN...WE SO CALLED CONSERVATIVE VOTERS ARE JUST LOOKING FOR SMALLER GOVERNMENT..IF I WANTED TO LIVE IN A SOCIALISTIC COUNTRY I WOULD MOVE TO CANADA! MY UNCLES IN CANADA GIVE THEIR GOVERNMENT MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR PAYCHECKS! BUT I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOU AND I REALLY ENJOYED YOUR INTERVIEW WITH PRESIDENT BUSH. THANKS FOR THAT I NEEDED TO REMAIN A FAN. I HAVE A STORY IDEA THAT I THINK YOU WOULD BE AWESOME TO TELL MY STORY. THANKS ROBIN GREAT JOB WITH THE EXPRES! KUDOS

jason   June 12th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

nice jump and a great landing.glad everything went perfect today for you and the crew.i could tell by the way you were smiling that you will do it again.im happy that you and george had fun today and hope he had a happy birthday.

Al Gore in TIghts   June 12th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

I was reading these quotes and comments and was proud for once there was no bickering or hate...until I saw Patricia and Toni Pugh's disgusting comments.

When will people like you learn that it's not left v right but those of us who care towards a common solution, and those like you who object to it.

Jaime   June 12th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

I'm glad both of you are safe, that was very daring for an 85 years old man.
I would have loved if you asked him or Bush junior more serious questions, rather your friendly approach, both Bush has done us no good!
Yes we are lucky to have him born, because it's God's will, but not too lucky for having these two guys running the show.

One last thought? The people paid for that jump? Was that from our tax money?

I hope my message will get through and not be moderated

hideaki nagano   June 12th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

I think he live a happy life.So i think he have no better idea than this.

Sues   June 12th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Bravo to you & Mr.Bush ! The jumps were awesome :) ) HIGH FIVE .

KB   June 12th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Couldn't stand his son., but Sr. is a great person. A mediocre president, but post-WH he's done well. I mean George HW Bush and Bill Clinton? Who'd have thought? Many happy returns for a great man.

george   June 12th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Hey Larry B.:

You are an idiot...plain and simple.

We all hope your chute doesn't open!

ned waterman   June 12th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

It is so funny to see how we all agree how honorable George HW Bush was, but have little to say about his son. If they didn't look so similar, I'd swear the son was an orphan boy raised by wolves who was adopted by this nice family and later let them down....indeed, let all of us down. I'm ashamed now to be a baby boomer; we should have all done more to honor our parents, the "greatest generation". Now THATs a legacy....

larrybisdumb   June 12th, 2009 11:55 pm ET

Larry B, you are very foolish...... You dont want the mans chute to open??? Let me guess, he is a hate monger, intolerant, all those things you are not? Right! So what does not wanting his chute to open make you???? Oh, I know, a fool....

Bathurst Parsons   June 13th, 2009 9:58 am ET

He should fess up about his involvement in the JFK assassination. That might just right the wrong he created by unleashing his idiot namesaske on the world.

Resh alef he   June 14th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

The former President won't be doing a tell-all because for the last eight years Dick Cheney has been running the country. Now he's about to shopping around for a book deal. At least Cheney's book will have words in it. Last I heard, Bush didn't like to read (hence, we went to war with Iraq based on unsuitable intelligence). If he doesn't read, what would Bush write?

I think he should concentrate on his library (I think it will be a SMU) and fill it up with his Comic and Coloring Books.

Nic of Queens   November 2nd, 2009 10:02 am ET

In regard to those screaming kids on planes article;

Even before the 9/11 carnage I hated flying, so when i do fly I am very tense.
Those inconciderate parents with those uncontrollable kids make the flight even more stressful.
I also wonder how those parents are raising those kids, what type of disiplin they recieve if any, and how do those kids act in school.
How will those kids act in school when they are not supervised by their parents?
Will those kids be labled a.d.h.d. in school and then be treated as such medically.
