Staff SargeantDustin Clark proposed to Rachelle in the airport while on leave last May.

My name is Rachelle Lusardi and I am saluting Staff Sargeant Dustin Clark.

Dustin is serving in Iraq until October. I would like to tell him that I am very proud of him and consider myself the luckiest girl in the world to be his fiance.

His children love him and miss him very much and can't wait for their daddy to come home. I cannot wait for him to come home so that I can marry him and start our lives together.

Dustin proposed to me at the airport when he came home on leave from Iraq this May. We are getting married in November, a month after he gets back.

I just want to tell him we love him and I can't wait to be his wife.

“My heart still skips a beat when I see him in his uniform”

Posted: 01:49 PM ET

Petty Officer 1st Class Kyle Matthiesen with his wife
Petty Officer 1st Class Kyle Matthiesen with his wife

I want to salute my husband of seven years, Petty Officer 1st Class Kyle Matthiesen. He is currently an instructor at a Submarine Learning Center here in St. Marys, Georgia but he will be leaving this fall to deploy on the USS Rhode Island, a Trident Subarine.

I am so proud of all his accomplishments but especially his recent Sailor of the Year honor that was presented to him by his command.  Not only was he chosen as the top Sailor at Trident Training Facility but also won the designation as the Top Sailor for all the Submarine Learning Centers worldwide for the U.S. Navy.

Despite all the dedication and hard work that he puts into his job, he still finds time to be a wonderful father to our three children, including our newest son who arrived this April! He is a devoted husband and, even after seven years of marriage, my heart still skips a beat every day when I see him walk up the driveway in his uniform.

We have learned after many deployments that one of the benefits of us being separated for months at a time is that our marriage always feels like it is in the "honeymoon phase" whenever he is at home!

Even though we will miss him when he leaves this fall for deployment, we want him to know that we are so proud of what he does and we want to thank him for being such a wonderful husband and father!

–Megan, Conrad, Sophia, and Vincent Matthiesen

P.S. He would be upset if I didn't mention that he is a devoted Cubs/Bears Fan!

Bob's half marathon training

Posted: 11:25 AM ET

Morning Express meteorologist Bob Van Dillen

It is hard to believe the Napa to Sonoma half marathon is only 3 weeks away.  I can't wait to not train in the Atlanta heat anymore!

I am proud to be the honorary chairman for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America and this race will bring much needed attention to these diseases.  1.4 million Americans are living with Crohn's and ulcerative colitis and over 150,000 are under the age of 18.  An estimated 2/3 to 3/4 of children with Crohn's disease will require one or more operations in their lifetime!

You can help support me by making a donation to CCFA right here.

This week's training schedule is pretty rough, but my 'handles' have shrunken to a new low.  I haven't seen my ribs since I was 19, but now you can see they may be there through a thinner layer of flab.  I guess I'll still run after this half marathon.

Tuesday: weights, 5 mile run
Wednesday: weights, 45 minute tempo run
Thursday: weights, 3 mile run
Friday: weights, no run (thank you!!)
Saturday: 5 mile at 8:20 pace
Sunday: 11 mile run

Spc. Dennis Boney and his daughter, Kylee.

I would like to salute my husband Spc. Dennis Boney, serving in the Mississippi Army National Guard.

Because he was recently deployed to Iraq, he missed his first father's day with our 9-month-old daughter, Kylee. He left last Wednesday, four days before father’s day. He will also miss her first birthday in September.

Kylee misses him so much. You should just see the way her face lights up by just hearing his voice or seeing his picture.

I want to tell him how very proud we are of him and the sacrifices he has made in service of our country. We love you, baby.

South Carolina governor caught in affair

Posted: 06:42 AM ET

TV-Web Producer Kate

Last week, South Carolina governor Mark Sanford disappeared after a tough session in the state legislature. His constituency was alarmed by his disappearance, and his staff released a message saying that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Then, Gov. Sanford's car was spotted at the airport in Columbia, South Carolina.

The whole caper came tumbling in when the governor was spotted at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The governor admitted that, in fact, he had been in Argentina, visiting his mistress. See a timeline of Sanford's activities.

Sanford held a news conference in Columbia, South Carolina, where he announced his resignation as head of the Republican Governor's Association.

Sanford also addressed how he and his wife were handling the situation.

Sanford had been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, after his current second consecutive term as governor ends.

What do you think? Have political sex scandals gone too far?

Is this behavior befitting of a governor? What should Sanford's next step be? Share your views in the comments field below.

Half marathon training: Blazing hot

Posted: 11:23 AM ET

Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen

It's starting to get more difficult. Training for a half marathon is never fun, but now that the temperatures are in the mid 90s every day it's downright miserable.

It's blazing hot in the summertime in Atlanta.
It's blazing hot in the summertime in Atlanta.

My wife and I continue to run for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, you can check out my prior blogs about it here.

Last week our long run was ten miles, something that is easier to do outside. This past weekend, however, featured 95-degree temperatures in Atlanta. We were forced to run the ten on our treadmill.

Everything was going well for me until about mile 8.5 when my son decides to use the bathroom right next to the treadmill.

He's only five, but he can clear a room. The last one and a half miles were dreadful.

This week, the training ramps up:
Monday: weights, rest
Tuesday: weights, 5 miles
Wednesday: weights, nine 400 yard sprints
Thursday: weights, 3 miles
Friday: weights, rest
Saturday: rest
Sunday: 15 K run

Would you like to make a donation to the Crohn's and Colitis foundation of America? Please do so here.

Coming home in June!

Posted: 11:45 AM ET
What a handsome soldier!
What a handsome soldier!

Hi Robin, I am Anna Castillo-Lora and I want to salute my son Specialist Robert Christopher Genaro. US Army, Infantry Soldier. He is returning home after 12 mouths in Afghanistan. Shortly after his 20th birthday he was deployed to Afghanistan. Not knowing if I would ever see him again or the condition he would return home kept me in constant prayer for him and his comrades.

Specialist Robert C. Genaro, now 21 years old, is schedule to arrive at Hood Army post located outside of Killeen, TX in June of 2009, Where he will be greeted by his wife Inna and three-year-old daughter Emily. Due to the short notice arriving schedule I will not be able to be there to welcome my son home.

I am very proud of my son and of his service to our country. At an early age Robert became a father and faces his responsibilities. Shortly after his 18th birthday he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, then he was deployed to Afghanistan for 15 month. While there the deployment was reduced to 12 months.

It has been very hard for all of us this past year but for three-year-old Emily it has been the hardest. Being the apple of her Daddy's eye and not having him around was very confusing and lonely for her. They are a wonderful family and I am proud of them all. SP4 Robert Genaro, USA I salute you for serving your country. Inna and Emily Genaro I thank you for your unconditional love for my Son.

Would you like to send a salute to a service member overseas? You can do so here.

Happy Father's Day

Posted: 06:10 AM ET

Sports Anchor Rafer Weigel

Happy Father’s Day. Of all the Hallmark holidays this one by far holds the most meaning for me. The events surrounding it have made me who I am.

Tim and Rafer Weigel.
Tim and Rafer Weigel.

As a young boy, for my dad and me, Father’s day meant baseball. There were two teams to root for in the city of Chicago, and we took full advantage. We loved the Cubs and the Sox—which is actually a sacrilege. If one team wasn’t in town, then we’d watch the other. We loved being at the park which to us was sacred ground.

I knew every player’s name and number. I scored every game on my scorecard. Every run, hit and error. We were something out of a Norman Rockwell painting: My dad passing his love for the game down to me and I enjoying it so much I chronicled it on paper so I could relive it in my mind over and over again.

My dad loved sports so much that he made a career out of them. He was a sportswriter and sports anchor at the NBC station at that time. But sports were only a small part of who he was. He was a learned man—a man of letters. A graduate of Yale and Northwestern, he was well versed in all the classics. He was also an accomplished pianist and even an enthusiast of the opera. He was a star athlete in college as the starting running back for Yale's football team. He was a true renaissance man.

For him sports weren’t a distraction. They were a way of life (literally) that taught invaluable life lessons. They were about discipline and drive and the pursuit of excellence. They were avenues for achievement and those who excelled were to be admired and respected. Sports were something to be passionate about because to be successful at them you had to have passion.

The irony was, as he got more successful as a sportscaster it became harder for us to go to games. In Chicago, local anchors were rock stars. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Anchorman” it was just like that. People came up to him constantly because he was “kind of a big deal” and our intimate moments suffered.

So instead we went to the press box: He with his briefcase and notepad, and I assisting him any way I could—gathering stat sheets, getting coffee, whatever—just to take in the game together at the park or stadium. In many ways, those moments were even more memorable because that’s when I started learning the job.

The other irony is, I later lost my father on Father’s day. Eight years ago to cancer. That was another defining moment in my life. It was when I chose to follow in his footsteps into this career. Now that passion he once shared with me, I now share with you.

What memories do you have associated with this holiday? What father/son, father/daughter traditions do you remember or would like to share? I’m going to be a father myself in a couple of months and I could use some more suggestions—other than baseball of course.
