Michael Vick deserves another shot at the NFL … just not on my team

Posted: 08:50 AM ET

Sports Anchor Rafer Weigel

Vick’s possible return to football is an even more hotly debated topic than American Idol’s Kris Allen or Adam Lambert … or so I’m told. It’s certainly much more divisive. And it should be. Vick’s crimes were so gruesome most animals lovers can’t get it out of our heads.

Michael Vick left jail for house arrest. His next step? Trying to get back in the NFL.
Michael Vick left jail for house arrest. His next step? Trying to get back in the NFL.

But, Vick has served his time and under the rights of the law deserves a chance to turn his life around.

But should he be allowed back in the NFL? Is playing football professionally a privilege or a right?

My opinion will probably upset both sides.

Let the man come back and make a living. Give him the same rights we all deserve after paying our debt to society. Let him turn his life around be a productive member of society and even try and educate others about his mistakes.

Just not in my backyard.

I don’t want to deny a man’s right to work. Just don’t make me root for him on the football field. Don’t put his jersey for sale in my team’s stadium and don’t put that distraction in my team’s locker room—which is the selfish nature of being a fan.

At least I’m being upfront about my double standard.

What do you think about Vick’s possible return to football?

Michael Vick is a dog torturer and killer, sadist and a sociopath.

Justice for such people: No house arrest. Incarceration for life in a 4 x 4 cage with both ears cut off, starved, beaten, amd been made to fight to the death with other sociopaths. If such people survive the death match, they should be returned to the cage and starved to death.

NFL BEWARE!!!!

Delbert   May 21st, 2009 9:09 am ET

I work for Railroad. If I am convicted of a felony, I can not return to my job. Neither should an athlete who my children look up to. Being out of jail is his 2ND chance.

Doug Rice   May 21st, 2009 9:10 am ET

Movie and TV stars, sports greats, and our workd leaders are supposed to be role models for our children. When those people don't simple breal the law, but rather they do something so hedious as using one dog to kill another for profit, there is no reason for the courts not consider the death penalty, mostless the NFL to even consider allowing Vick to return to play. If he does, I pray his offensive line refuses to block for himi, allowing toe defense to do to him, exactly what he did to those poor animals.

Pat   May 21st, 2009 9:11 am ET

He had his shot in the big leagues..... toss him aside, just as he did to dying dogs. Let his name be a reminder to the future stars of professional sports, of their accountability to the fans.

Charles   May 21st, 2009 9:16 am ET

How much more punishment should Vick has to endour to satisfy the critics. He lost his job, lost his freedom, not to mention lost a lot of money. He has paid his debit to society and now is hoping to be given another chance. We all make mistake no matter the magnitude, a mistake ia a mistake. We should not try to punish someone for the rest of their life just because they are trying to get their job back.

Mary Lou JOrdan   May 21st, 2009 9:16 am ET

I think it is so sad when we do not take a stand against crime in our sport industry. I myself like to watch football, Nascar and baseball so I am not against sports. When a person who is making millions of dollars a year, (which is crazy to begin with) gets caught doing something they shouldn't , then their pay should be cut in half with the other half donated to a charity. If they are caught with drugs then donate to a drug rehab, as in Vick's place, half of his pay should go to the Humane Society. Kids across our nation and the world look up to these people and we are sending them mixed emotions. If you are famous you can break the law and still be able to continue on as you were. This needs to stop! I believe in second chances but there has to be a pay back and not with more millions. I would imagine jail time wasn't too bad when Vick knew it would be business as usual when he got out.

Donna York   May 21st, 2009 9:25 am ET

NO NO NO He should not be able to play football ever again!!!

roger   May 21st, 2009 9:25 am ET

No way, in any other profession (let's use nursing) after breaking the law your not permitted to work in the profession regardless of how good you were. He had earned the right/privilege to play/compete and squandered it. Let MV pay his financial debt through hard work not a sweet deal from the league.

E. Lyons   May 21st, 2009 9:25 am ET

let him live to play again

Donna E   May 21st, 2009 9:27 am ET

I agree that Michael "Animal Sadist" Vick should get a job, but he has not earned the right to be in the public spotlight whatsoever. He committed not one, but two, crimes–he tortured animals (and you know that dogs were not his only victims here-there had to be bait animals used to "train" his fighting dogs) AND he tried to bilk tons of money from his company's "pension" plan-I.E.-he pulled a Madoff. Just because he went to prison for those crimes DOES NOT mean he has been reformed!! The NFL is a spotlight sport, and with that comes the title "ROLE MODEL". If the NFL does bring him back, what are they saying to people? Oh, go ahead, torture animals, and when you get out of prison, come on back!! Where is the punishment here?? Substitute any crime here: Murder, pedophile, spousal abuser, drug dealer, and what picture do you get?? He lost his ticket to get on this boat–let him pick a "career" out of the public spotlight, show people he IS reform-ING, and maybe in a few years/decades, if we all agree that he IS sincere, let him come back as a coach or something. But NOT now-it's too soon, the crime too heinous; he needs to heal himself, and he needs to do it OUT of the public's eye.

Amy   May 21st, 2009 9:28 am ET

I can't help but wonder if Michael is sincerely sorry for what he did to all those poor dogs or is he just trying to save face. If he is truly sorry then I feel he should be allowed to play, but I wouldn't want my daughter to look up to him as a role model.
Amy in New York

Ken   May 21st, 2009 9:29 am ET

NO,,!! Not in a Hundred Years...

Anthony Huber   May 21st, 2009 9:31 am ET

Rafer,

Don't fall into the hypocracy. Let's look back at history;

Ted and Chappaquiddick = Successful second chance.
Rush and Xanax = Successful second chance
Ray Lewis and Super Bowl murder = Sucessful second chance

Vick has paid his debt to society (more than the men above ever have). LET"S MOVE ON – LET HIM PLAY!!!

Deby Duff   May 21st, 2009 9:33 am ET

NO....Vicks should not be allowed back to NFL.

How about 10 years helping and supporting animal shelters!!!!

Those dogs didn't get a second chance for their lives.

Tim J. FWB   May 21st, 2009 9:34 am ET

Look up the recidivism rate in our country and talk to me. The leaders of our country who help make up the laws have created a quagmire or I like the term Mongolian Dic- Dance of our legal system. We need to accept those people back into our society with open arms, they need support, not folks that turn their backs(except the hardcore criminals, which alot of them have become hard core because of our sorry legal system).

Roger the Redskin fan   May 21st, 2009 9:35 am ET

Let him play! Politically correct or not, he's paid his debt and lost almost everything he ever had, what else do the PC police want! What about all the Corporate thugs that have destroyed all the Human lives with thier greed?

Enrique T Fletes   May 21st, 2009 9:39 am ET

Mr. Vick by all means deserves the opportunity to play again in the NFL. Lets not treat him as a rapist or a serial killer. He was making too much money and made a bad decision. Ameica should lighten up.He allready has paid a huge price for his mistake. Let the man play!!

Adriana   May 21st, 2009 9:40 am ET

Michael Vick must live and learn and we should all forgive and forget. He like everyone else that has ever been incarcerated has paid his price, two Years behind bars, millions of dollars, his home and his reputation among fans. I would love for him to be able to have the opportunity to prove he has changed and would never return to his old habits and those who were around him encouraging his illegal behavior. I for one would cheer him on if he was allowed to play football again especially if he was to be picked up by the Oakland Raiders. My team needs some help. Well ok........ tons of help.

Mary Anne   May 21st, 2009 9:45 am ET

Michael Vick is going to have to do more than a promo for the Humane Society to impress me with his remorse. Call me cynical, but I believe he just wants to get back into his cushy, celeb lifestyle. That operation he ran still sickens me. No, I don't want to see him in the NFL.

Tim J. FWB   May 21st, 2009 9:47 am ET

Oh yeah, Mike, can't wait to see you back on the field you paid the price brother and we all make mistakes trust me. If you have not sinned then cast the first stone. That'll shutup most of them. I want to see you cast the first football this year forget about stone throwing.

MARGARET   May 21st, 2009 9:52 am ET

I THINK HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO FOOTBALL. THAT IS WHAT HJE DOES BEST. BUT I ALSO THINK HE IF HE DOES THEN PART OF HIS MONEY SHOULD GO TO A FUNS TO HELP KEEP ARE YOUNG KIDS FROM DOING WHAT HE DID.

brandi   May 21st, 2009 9:53 am ET

They are just dogs if he had killed someone yes I could see where he shouldn't get another chance but come on they are dogs!

Angus Broadwell   May 21st, 2009 9:53 am ET

Everyone that is commenting that Vick shouldn't get a second chance, I'd like to ask you what he should do? You don't want him working? That's insane! Is there this magic place that released convicted felons go to in your mind? Everyone needs a job.

Diana   May 21st, 2009 9:54 am ET

If Leonard Little from the St. Louis Rams can kill a woman in a drunk driving wreck and still play football, I see no reason why Michael Vick can't play. A human life is worth more than any animal's life. Go Vick!!!

Jeff   May 21st, 2009 9:54 am ET

There just dogs. Its not like he killed or raped someone. He deserves to go back to work and he is a football player.

Doug Rice   May 21st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Movie and TV stars, sports greats, and our world leaders are supposed to be role models for our children. When those people don’t simply break the law, but rather they do something so hedious as using one dog to kill another for profit, there is no reason for the courts not consider the death penalty, mostless the NFL to even consider allowing Vick to return to play. Patty White   May 21st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Are you kidding, Michael Vick deserves to play in the local dog pound, cleaning up after animals that he so terribly abused. Let him make minimum wage. And he wants to go back and play Football l, I sure feel sorry for the team that may buy his contract, I am sure their ticket sales will diminishes and team supporters too. I can see boycotts in his future,
He deserves nothing!

John   May 21st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Michael Vick should not be allowed back into any sport. With the young people of America looking to sports figures as heroes and models for how they should live, any criminal activity should levy a permanent ban to all sports and related enterprises. This, of course, includes steroid use. If the people that are the heroes for so many of our youth are allowed to constantly break the law and set bad examples for our youth can continue to return to making millions of dollars in their job, what message is that sending to our youth? Is it okay to break the law and be an idol to our children? These sports figures are in a position of higher responsibility and must be held to a higher standard of conduct.

Nancy Sams   May 21st, 2009 9:56 am ET

Why is it people don not feel remorse until caught.? Had Vick not been caught he would still be participating in the same shameful events.

Andrew Fiero   May 21st, 2009 9:56 am ET

The man did his time. If he worked @ Burger King, he would be able to return to work. Why shouldn't he be able to return to where he worked before, if he still has the talent ?

Linda   May 21st, 2009 9:56 am ET

My goodness, this faux outrage on Vick going back to playing football is absolutely ridiculous.

The question is and why not. Why would he not be allowed to return to his profession that he is good at?

You have some freaks who are jealous, or ths entire "animal rights" thing. One thing has nothing to do with another. I'm a vegan, her served his time for poor judgement and cruelty. And has lost a lot.

And the league, really, has no place in claiming he CAN'T go back to playing football, unless the Leaque wants to make a law saying no persons indicted or served time, ie ex convicts, are allowed in the leaque.

He still is going to have to deal with WHO wants to hire him. So, enuf, he did it all well. He served his time, paid his price and did it all honorably. Move on folks, there's much more to worry about out there.

Rachel Dunlap   May 21st, 2009 9:56 am ET

Oh come on everybody has some skeletons in their closet. He made a mistake. Why should he be fired from his job for something he did outside of work. If he were not a celebrity the chances he would be fired from his job would be slim to done. Look at all the people that have done such horrible things. Come on give him a break. He has paid for his crime why take away everything he has going for him!

Helen   May 21st, 2009 9:56 am ET

Damm! All this about dogs. On numerous channels you can watch ultimate fighting, men (humans) pounding each other beyhond recognition. That's ok! In any county in the South you will see dog fighting is there a swat team looking for these "country bumpkins". I think not. Question? If Vicks was not Black and rich would he be treated as he has. A murderer of a human has gotten less time.
,He should be allowed to play ball. Has he not served his sentence?

Must I pull the race card? You'r damm right.

Ronald Janssen   May 21st, 2009 9:57 am ET

No way he should play football!!! Get him a job working at a animal shelter!!

MARY WILKINS   May 21st, 2009 9:57 am ET

MICHAEL VICK ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT DESERVE TO EVER PLAY FOOTBALL AGAIN....HE SHOULDN'T EVEN BE OUT OF PRISON LET ALONE BACK ON A FOOTBALL FIELD!

sandy   May 21st, 2009 9:57 am ET

if he learned from his mistake let him in

Warren   May 21st, 2009 9:59 am ET

My wife and I are season ticket holders for over 20 years and would give up our seats if the Bucs hired Vick. Football players are icons and roll models for our youth and I wouldn't consider Vick someone I would want my children or grandchildren emulating.

Rachel W   May 21st, 2009 10:01 am ET

Vick has served time and is paying penalties. Why shouldn't he return to the NFL? His situation didn't directly involve the NFL, just his publicity making them look bad. He'll never live it down, just let him play!

Pamela Timmons   May 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

Michael Vick should be ostracized from society in every way – period. He is a sociopath just like OJ Simpson. No heart, no soul, no conscience. I do NOT think he deserves the opportunity to resume a very lucrative career. I think he should rot in hell!

Joy Eichhorn   May 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

Mike Tyson raped a woman, did time in prison (about 4 years I think), got out, and was allowed to fight again...of course Michael Vick is going to get to play football again...it's about winning and money, and he's a money machine...what kind of example does this set for our children?? Not such a good one...

Allison   May 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

For the love of god there are NFL players that have been involved in the death of other Humans and we don't hear this much yappin about them, he served his time, let it go!

Joe Biggolo   May 21st, 2009 10:02 am ET

I think if Michael Vick is let back into football then they should let out of prisons all the first time criminals, such as murderers and rapists and give them a second chance too. Just because they were dogs doesn't justify life between a dog and a human being. There are some dogs that are smarter than some humans, for instance Michael Vick. This all about money. The public has no say in what happens.

Susan   May 21st, 2009 10:03 am ET

I think all of you out there protesting Michael Vicks working in Football, are hypocrites........ Thats right...... Hypocrites.......... He has served his time, he has paid his debt, such as it was, and how silly to keep beating him up over , in reality such a trivial thing.......... There are worse things happening in this world people , There are starving kids in the United States today, there are homeless people walking the streets. The Jobless rate in the U.S. is at an all time high, what is more important...... oh yeah, he had some dogs and fought them, because that is what they were bred to do........... silly me.......... lets open some of you all closet doors and see what bones fall out of it, He happens to be a football star or something, and so his closet door is open to all, well before you keep throwing those stones, better go check you alls closets..........

Yes, what he did was bad, I wouldn't do it myself, but you know what, I probably do stuff that he wouldn't ever do either and some of you all sittin up on your pedastalls need to step back.......... and think about your lives, would you hold up to public scrutiny?

Thanks

Annette   May 21st, 2009 10:04 am ET

Regarding Michael Vick, I feel that he has served his time. Why is it OK for him to work a $10.00 an hour construction job but not ok to work a million dollar NFL job? We all make mistakes and he served his time! I say if the Commissioner gives him permission and a team signs him then it’s your choice if you want to be a fan and buy that ticket. I hate what he did however; I believe he deserves another opportunity.
Thank you Robin I watch you every day and love what you do for our troops!!! You rock!!

Carolyn Cheslock   May 21st, 2009 10:07 am ET

Michael Vick is a monster. Anyone who would mistreat any living thing the way he did should be made to shovel poop for the rest of his life.

DC Clifford   May 21st, 2009 10:07 am ET

I'm sure Michael Vick has LOTS of REMORSE for what he did....... MILLIONS OF REMORSE. His own dad tried to stop him when he was in highschool, instead he use his millions to upgrade and go hi-tech in his abuse. There are millions of others out there waiting for the golden opportunity he had..........NO ONE IS IRREPLACEABLEABLE, and certainly not someone who would be an idol to youth!
NONONONONONONO!

Stephanie Flowers   May 21st, 2009 10:11 am ET

Football is a Glory Game. Do we really want to be cheering this dog abuser on as he plays the game. NO to Micheal Vick. Sorry you had your Chance.Maybe get into Wrestling...

elizabeth ortiz   May 21st, 2009 10:18 am ET

michael vick can work at construction. what he did to those animals is unforgiving, he will never change his feelings for animals. did he need more money by having dog fights? he is uncaring and greedy and i have sent more emails to the nfl than i can count. he does not deserve another chance – the animals did not get another chance when he hung them, etc.

NO NO NO TO VICK!!!!

Daytona Bch Fl

Janice   May 21st, 2009 10:20 am ET

If the NFL wants people to look at one of their player’s face and see visions of poor bloody dogs being tortured after fighting for their lives they should reinstate Michael Vick. I do believe that he has served his time for this crime and deserves to move on with his life but I hope it's not in the public eye because I don't want to have to look at him. There is no way I can respect Michael Vick knowing that he forced animals to endure horrible pain for money and sport. Only bad people that I try to avoid can actually beat, electrocute and kill living things. So no matter how well he can play ball I can’t watch him and will never support him. His image is already ruined for me and can't be repaired.

Joe of Kentucky   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

No way he should have to work at a dog pound for the rest of
his sentence

Kathy Couvillion   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

No way does he deserve another chance! He was born evil and that can never be "fixed".

Norman   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

Last time I checked, Wiegel didn't own a team, its about talent and business, if he still have the talent and can deliver, let him play.

We all have a trade for our livelyhood, football is Mike's trade, so let Wiegel report and Mike play, "Let him who is without sin, cast the first stone"

Marianne   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

Don't send Vick to Canada – we don't want him either – try Europe or Japan

christa   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

No

Christopher Ray   May 21st, 2009 10:23 am ET

I think he should be allowed to come back IF the team owner wants him back. The NFL is privately owned so it should be up to the owners unless if there are rules already in place that doesn't allow it.

Rob from Orlando   May 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

I really think the NFL should rethink their stance on convicted felons playing again in the NFL. What kind of message are we sending young people? My thinking, if you are convicted for anything other than a minor traffic violation, YOU ARE DONE FOR LIFE!!! So no he should not play football again.

josh   May 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

Give me a chance

josh   May 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

give him a chance

Sue   May 21st, 2009 10:24 am ET

Michael Vick doesn't deserve the life the nfl can give him. Professional sports should be one strike you're out!! There are too many people out there that are willing & able to live by the rules for what they get paid.

SLM   May 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

DESERVE?? He doesn't deserve anything. He needs a career out of the public eye. Maybe he could get a job working with animals at a slaughter house. Seems he would be pretty comfortable with that.

Bree   May 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

I don't get how people could just let it slide like that.

Some of the dogs he had had their teeth surgically removed to keep them from biting the fighting dogs. It's a common practice for breeding or baiting, which is essentially giving a prizefighter a weaker opponent to practice on. Other habits include breeding a female until her belly sags to the floor, almost in a puppy mill fashion, and use of rape stands. Or how when baiting, though de-toothed dogs are used, often small dogs, kittens, or cats are used. Many dogs there, if not explicitly fighting dogs, were just plain abused, and had social and anxiety issues.

And let's not forget the brutal forms of execution he used on the dogs...

Isn't there some saying that says that one can measure a man's soul by how he treats animals? If that's the case, Michael Vick is as cold, callous, and just plain evil as you can get. Yes, humans may be more powerful than the dogs, but there is absolutely no excuse for abusing that power like Michael Vick did. And now he gets out of prison, and I don't buy that reformed act for a second. He's being smug about it, and 23 months, in my opinion, is hardly any punishment for the abuse and torture that he inflicted on the poor dogs.

Pauline   May 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

Because sports figures are role models for impressionable young fans letting a convicted animal abuser represent any national team seems wrong. I personally would not attend or even watch a team that would think this person is an acceptable role model.

Avid RaiderFan   May 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

Mike has paid his debt to society and deserves a chance to make a living using his God given talents - football. We NEED MIKE VIC IN OAKLAND.

mary jane henley   May 21st, 2009 10:26 am ET

everyone has something in there closet. Nobody is perfect and if they say they are, they 're probaley lying. everyone deserves a second chance.we gave m. phelps another chance.

Jane Leavy   May 21st, 2009 10:27 am ET

Michael Vick should NOT be given a second chance! Clearly anyone who can torture and kill animals, and for profit, does not have compassion for the pain and suffering of animals, and questionable about the level and depth for people!

He is becoming involved with the Humane Society to resurrect his public image and football career...again, for self-serving reasons and for PROFIT! I hope he never plays football again and makes the kind of money he did!

C.D.   May 21st, 2009 10:27 am ET

Michael Vick doesn't deserve another chance at the NFL. He had his chance, but ruined his personal image when he decided to do something he knew was wrong and inhumane. Michael Vick probably thinks he deserves another chance because other football players have been in trouble for drugs or any other problems, But those other football players who have been in trouble wasn't fighting animals.

Cindy M   May 21st, 2009 10:28 am ET

Micheal Vick has committed an atrocious act and should never ever be able to return to NFL football.

Kenny Brown   May 21st, 2009 10:29 am ET

let him play. He made a stupid decision to get involved in dog fighting. I wonder how many athletes are involved in activites such as horse and dog racing. There are several reports of cruelty to retired animals that are kept on the down low and it is accepted maybe this should be broght to the forefront and then look at how many athletes are participating. Do you ban them for there support

R.E. Starr   May 21st, 2009 10:30 am ET

No he should not ever be able to play , I'am sure he has plenty of money to live better than most.

john   May 21st, 2009 10:30 am ET

cmon people, what he did was wrong but he didnt kill anyone.there are people out there playing sports that have done worse.he did his time whats wrong with us that we cant say hey, well give him another chance we do it for a lot worse criminals. and why can someone go out and shoot a deer or bear and stuff it for keep sake and show it off and we dont think twice about them.we are one screwed up country.

James   May 21st, 2009 10:30 am ET

Absolutely NOT!!!!! There are so many pro Athletes that are good people/role models, we don't need him. I think what he did is just about as bad as murder and rape. (just about). He should have done more time and certainly doesn't deserve a "pass", no pun intended, back into the NFL-or any other pro sport/league. This arrogant, unremorseful individual is garbage.

lks   May 21st, 2009 10:30 am ET

i am from atlanta and i am a black male. i just think it is time to let it go. vic did not kill a humanbeing!!!!! people are killing other people and peta and who everelse does not care about that but they want to keep talking about vic. let it go please.

Bobby Gerardi   May 21st, 2009 10:31 am ET

He Should not be allowed back in the NFL...He killed in a brutal way. He is not a normal person, any human being that can kill the way he did and step on a football field and sign autographs for little kids and think nothing of it, does not belong in th NFL.. If he is allowed to play I will never watch football ever again. That says it ok to kill..... He is Scum............Thank you...... Bobby G

Ellen Larsen   May 21st, 2009 10:32 am ET

Good Morning; The anouncer made a comment that they didn't want Michael Vick of their team, but to send him to the Canadian League.
FORGET IT!!!! We don't want him in Canada. He should go through the same treatment as other people released from prison. Being ostracized and finding it hard to get a job. Any "ordinary" everyday person that may have done the same thing wouldn't get any special priveledges when realeased from prison. Why should Vick? This to me is a horrible statement on the justice system in the US and Canada. People who are rich get special treatment. Are the other men that were indicted with him out? Do they get to return to their jobs?

christa   May 21st, 2009 10:35 am ET

I said no to Vick and another comment. Why do singers, who were addicts get kidneys before a regular person gets a transplant. Maybe we should ask doctors if someone with the same bloodtype as Natalie Cole, was much longer on the list. I am sick and tired to see, if your are a so called celebrity who abused their bodies with drugs and alcohol you come first. These doctors should be sued if someone who was longer on the list then her with the same bloodtype dies. My girlfriend was five years on a kidney machine not a few month.

mary from tx   May 21st, 2009 10:38 am ET

no way should he be allowed to go back to footbball!! does no one realize that teens all over our country look up to football players? let him go back , you might as well say to them he did one thing wrong, he got caught ! then there is the fact that he used the large amounts of money that he made from football to basically torture animals. Hello, reward him by letting him back in to make more? NOT !!!!!

Debbie   May 21st, 2009 10:41 am ET

Please inform Rafer that your criminals cannot come to Canada, we don't let criminals into our country. Why would we want him?
Your constant disregard for Canada offends me on a daily basis.
Grow up Rafer...no one really thinks your opinion matters.
I believe Canadians are sick of the arrogance of Americans, after all, your arrogance has seriously damaged the world.
The only good thing about you is Mr. Obama.
You need to start looking to Canada and maybe you could learn something...LIKE MANNERS for example.
AGAIN I WILL SAY...WE DO NOT WANT YOUR TRASHY, ANIMAL ABUSING CRIMINALS.
The Canadian Football League is a family friendly sport and Vick would not be anyone we would accept to represent our football league.
How dare you say he should come here when you would not even want him yourself.

james hamann   May 21st, 2009 10:43 am ET

he is suppose to be a role model but went to prison this is not a role model, he should be banned for life.this should be the way for all professinal athletes.he does not deseve a chance he had his chance & went to prison.

Kathy   May 21st, 2009 10:52 am ET

A comment was made on HLN this morning about Vick going to Canada to play for a year. Sorry but you are not dumping your garbage here. You can keep Vick, the CFL is not inerested!

Stephanie   May 21st, 2009 10:54 am ET

Dear Robin,
Yes, I do think that Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL. He has paid for his crime, and people should remember that. There are only two types of people in this world, the one's that get caught, and the one's that don't. Everyone makes mistakes or bad choices, just not everyone get's caught.
Stephanie

Diane C. Campbell   May 21st, 2009 10:55 am ET

Did Michael Vick, serve his time? Would the same individuals who get pumped over cruelty to animals, get pumped over cruelty to children?

Rhonda Reely   May 21st, 2009 10:57 am ET

This man is the FACE of EVIL.

He is a MONSTER and a PREDITOR
who preys on the weak and the vulnerable.

NO he should not be rewarded and go back to the NFL. .

He should not be a role model and not allowed near animals or children or the elderly. I think he is the DEVIL himeself .
He should be put into a field and have blood poured all over him-like he does the rabbits and prey to get the pitt-bulls ready for a fight and then the Pitt-Bulls should be allowed to Kill him. just they way he likes to watch them do-have his flesh ripped off his body while still alive.

Craig   May 21st, 2009 10:59 am ET

animals aren't just pets to most people , they are a part of their family (like children) . a lot of people love their dogs more then they like kids . so to some killing a dog is like killing a person .
I was a huge Reds fan many years ago and to this day I do not watch baseball because of the punishment they gave Pete Rose for gambling .sure he gambled but that was no reason to kick him out of the hall of fame ! however I thought it was fair that he was not allowed to play baseball anymore .
why is it one man can gamble and get kicked out of not only the hall of fame but baseball as well and somebody who takes lives (any life) should be allowed to play football again ?
if you want to use the excuse one was in the rule books and the other wasn't then look at the fact that any kind of killing is illegal . if M. V. is allowed to play football again , why couldn't O.J. ? not only was he accused of taking only 2 lives (compaired to the lives Vick took) but he was also found not guilty . .
yes Vick served his time and because of that he should be treated fairly on the streets but if he wants to play football again he needs to proove himself to us the people . he needs to take time off from football and help the community and show the fans that he is sorry for what he has done and that he has changed .

who?   May 21st, 2009 11:01 am ET

you just want to give a "politically correct" answer. The answer is yes he deserves another chance on any team that will employ him if a man like Leonard Little (Rams Defensive End) can kill a human being while driving drunk, get arrested again for drunk driving all to sign a pretty decent contract extension then it time to let off Mike Vick he has paid his debt to society so now just let the man live his life. In my opinion child molesters have an easier transition from prison to home than Mike Vick!!!

walter koniewicz   May 21st, 2009 11:05 am ET

I say when He's done his time for the crime and if the NFL lets him back – so be it. "Let him play"

Pat Jackson   May 21st, 2009 11:05 am ET

Although I think that Micheal Vick was absolutely wrong for his part played the dog fighting ring, he has paid his debt to society by serving two years in prison. He has the same rights to live a honest life to the fullest as anyone else who has served time. I think all this talk about should he be allowed to play in the NFL again, is nonsense! He has a right to support himself and his family. If he is still able to perform at a high level, why not? So what he fault dogs, he has done the time that was given to him, without reported incident. Randy Moss tryed to run down a parking authority cop (a human), i heard no talk about him not playing, Micheal Irvin, was high as a kite driving around downtown Dallas, on four flats, with nearly a kilo of cocaine in the car and a crack pipe....(illegal drug) no talk about not letting him play anymore after that. I don't get it! I agree that Vick screwed up, but I don't agree to not let him play anymore.

Brock   May 21st, 2009 11:09 am ET

Vick has paid his debt legally, and his activities were not centered around football. But being a role model, like it or not pro players are paid too well to play the game. Vick should start on the practice team at entry level pay for his first year, and have to earn the right to play on sunday. Unfortunately for Vick, animal activists will never forgive him and he will probably never hear the end of it, no matter where he is. He should start his own foundation for the rescue of fighting dogs. If that isn't enough and he can't win his popularity back, he may have to resort to basting himself with beef and jumping in the pit with the dogs. Lets hope he doesn't have to.

Pat Jackson   May 21st, 2009 11:10 am ET

I cant wait to see him play again, I hate that he won't be in Atl anymore, but maybe he can go play for the titans, I am close to that stadium too.! There is no QB like him in the league today, he was awesome, I just hope he has not lost it! Where ever he goes I will go check him out at least once!

Enrique T Fletes   May 21st, 2009 11:36 am ET

Let me get this right: Was Vick convicted for blowing up buildings? He is sure being handled like it. All of you voting for a permanent ban from football should get a life and take a look at yourselves...you are probably worst than him. I am not a big football fan but this movement to hang Mr. Vick for life really shocks me.

Terry Collier   May 21st, 2009 11:40 am ET

Should Michael Vick be allowed to return to the NFL? This should be a no-brainer. Ask yourself this question......if an NFL official commits such a crime, serves a sentence and fulfills the sentence, can he be pardoned and return to the NFL as an official? Better yet, if an NFL REFEREE commits such a crime, can HE return to the NFL?

Lorena   May 21st, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Vick should only be allowed to play in the NFL again if half his earnings go towards animal shelters around the United States.

Lee   May 21st, 2009 12:28 pm ET

I personally think that Vick should be allowed to play in the NFL. If he was a bus driver, would you ban him from driving busses again? He paid for his mistake and he admitted to them. Now it is time to forgive him and let him live his life.

Peggy   May 21st, 2009 1:58 pm ET

The only arena Vick should be allowed in is a gladiator arena with him as the bait. Just like the helpless dogs he killed. Oh yeah, and he should be chained to a "r*ping post" and have his teeth removed and starved before he goes into the arena with about 60 of the dogs he treated so badly.

Tony Gullo   May 21st, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Vick got his big money chance and blew it big time.
Maybe working construction for $10/ hour and his jail time are just the humbling experiences he needs to remind him that million dollar contracts and playing a kids game a few sundays a year, do not put him above the law. By-the-way, with so many folks unemployed, how did he manage to get this job???

jb1879   May 22nd, 2009 5:35 am ET

I say no! Yes, he may have paid for his crimes, but he should not be allowed to play in any NFL league. Many children look up to our NFL players and they should NOT be idlelizing a conficted fellon!!!!

Marcia   May 22nd, 2009 7:22 am ET

Let him play.....but make him start from scratch. He has only himself to blame for his situation. No big salary...he needs to work his way back up.

Richard Caldwell   May 22nd, 2009 9:06 am ET

Really, its the Western and Eastern Conference finals for the NHL and your still reporting on this? Who cares?

Anthony Ross   May 22nd, 2009 10:07 am ET

People are getting too emotional about Michael Vick. He did not committ a crime against children, sell drugs, rob anyone, did not rape, shoot anybody, or use steriods. Give the guy a break. He has a right to earn a living in his chosen profession. Maybe if he were a politician things would be different.

Rick Glaser   May 24th, 2009 12:32 am ET

Ban him, he lost his chance. Most people in his position would not be able to get any job, let alone one in the NFL.

gw   May 24th, 2009 9:03 am ET

No way, He should still be locked up. He is sick, and not a human being in my book. He should be treated the way he treated those poor dogs. He's hardly served any time at all. He no way should ever get his old life back.

a   May 24th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Teachers are threatened every day by their administrators, parents, students, and competitive fellow employees. Teachers are pitted against each other for favoritism. If students write blogs to kill someone, it is blamed on the school and the teacher workload is increased with an additional advisory class load. Teachers now have to do the janitor's job, the counselor's job, the principal's job, the vice principals job, the special ed teacher's job, the librarian's job, the reading teacher's job, the couch's job, and the parent's job. Teaching is the third highest stress job (1st-soldier in combat, 2nd-officer in gang fire, 3rd-everyday life for most teacher's). I have 3 BAs & 1 MA, but am paid less than $40,000 after 15 years of PSD, I will have no health coverage as a retiree. Most white collar retirees who want to try teaching quit after a few days because of the horrendous conditions. The buildings are full of mold & mildew, Teachers have to spend up to$1,000+ a year on supplies because students do not have pens or pencils or paper because they throw them away along with the free government food. Schools are in crisis because teachers have been abused and have no rights while the students and their parents have all the freedom and rights. This causes some teachers to crack up & resort to poor decisions for survival which only makes those who are still trying to succeed under impossible situations look bad. Teachers are expected to raise their on money via grants, sales, and other business enterprises which is the antithesis of education. So how are student blogs the responsibility of the schools which becomes more work for teachers?

Keith   May 25th, 2009 11:29 am ET

OK, here it is, Im not politically correct but truthful and if you dont want to hear this, stop right now.
Vick is a convicted criminal, get over it. SPORTS players are OVERrated, OVERpaid. Let the NFL determine his status and how much he should be paid...
I'm not a sportsfan, I hate commercialized sporting events.
Sports players like animal abusers like Vick, or steriod users like McGuire, Bonds or Canseco, or gamblers like Rose. Are losers. Why dont they get a real job like the rest of us. We dont need our children looking up to them as heros. As for Skeletons in the closet, I dont have any. No matter how much you dig.

rick   May 26th, 2009 7:54 am ET

i'll kick that aholes butt

DICK   May 26th, 2009 9:31 am ET

JB1879 GOOD POINT AND IM WITH YOU...BUT THE YOUTH ARE ALREADY IDOLIZING FELONS..THIS IS THE SOCIETY WE LIVE IN...I BLAME MOST OF THE TOLERANCE OF BS ON LIBERALS. IF SOME PEOPLE COULD HAVE THEYRE WAY, PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO HAVE NO REGARD FOR LIFE WOULDN'T GET ANYTHING AND WOULD BE IN PRISON

DICK   May 26th, 2009 9:34 am ET

BRANDI IM NOT SO MUCH OF AN ANIMAL LOVER BUT, I THINK THAT YOU ARE INSENSITVE, NAIVE AND SHALLOW..IN MY OPINION THESE DOGS PROB HAD MORE LOVE TO GIVE THAN YOU...YOU DISGUST ME

crazypeople in america   May 26th, 2009 11:43 am ET

MANY CHILDREN HAVE CONVICTED FATHERS WHO DID A CRIME AND SERVED THEIR TIME. SHOULD THESE CHILDREN NOW HATE THEIR FATHERS , WHO MADE MISTAKES? SHOULD THEY WRITE THEM OFF, AS THEIR FATHER? MANY OF US HAVE BROKEN THE LAW. WE JUST NEVER GOT CAUGHT. PUT THE SHOE ON YOUR FOOT AND THEN SEE WHERE OR HOW YOU'D STAND. WOULDN'T YOU WANT A NOTHER CHANCE TO FIX WHAT YOU MESSED UP?

Howie   May 27th, 2009 8:37 am ET

The guy makes me sick. I have no problem with him making a living but he should not be given special treatment. He is an ex con and should probably have to deal with finding work just the same as any other ex con. As far as football goes, I don't want to see him on the field. If he can talk a team in to taking him well shame on them.

troy   May 27th, 2009 10:44 am ET

hey dick,i'm one of those liberals your talkin about, but i am totally
against animal cruelty..mike vick,in my opinion, has not paid his
debt to society..that little bit of time in prison was nothing. As far
as him ever playin football again,i very seriously doubt it...he fked
up..now he has to pay..anyway,how the f..k was he even able to
get a construction job, with the economy in shambles, and soo
many people unemployed? makes ya thing..

Richardlew   May 27th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Rafer My Buddy How the heck are you?

Need to Comment on Mike Tyson's daughter death: No matter what Mike has done in his life My heart goes out to him and his ex-wife for their loss of such a young child... It just breaks my heart when I hear of a child who dies. god bless her and god Bless the whole family.

Richardlew

Richardlew   May 27th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Hey Rafer Buddy!

NOW Vick, that is a man that I feel hasn't served enough time in jail. Taking a life be it a human or animal for fun, I'm not talking about hunting, or fishing but the training of dogs chickens or any animal to kill one anotheris wrong.....Now as far as him going back into football, that is tough, yes a person needs to have an income to live, should he be back in football where violance is a way of life, myself I would say yes after months of treatment and a donation of what he makes to the pervention of such animal acts each pay check like 20% of his income..... and any free time Vick has, he MUST work in a animal shelter for the next 10 years.

D-Swauve   May 27th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

This wasn't really about the dogs this was a direct attack at Vick. The dogs was the excuse to bring about the failure of Vick. Dog fighting has been a well known sport for years just like Cock fighting. I think Vick was wrong in not being responsible in a positive way for the dogs he owned but we put dogs down everyday for just overcrowding the shelters and for population control. You can't tell me that dogs are more important than this man getting a second chance at being able to feed his kid. She is a human being. Where's the logic?

eileen   May 28th, 2009 8:49 am ET

Good Morning Robin.I Love The Morning Expess I'm Up With You Every Morning 6;00am Sharp My Question Is, Will there Be A Rebate Check For The Taxpayers. I remember Something About Up To A 1,000 With Kids Or For A Family, so could You Please Clear This Up For Me. Until The Next Time Which Is 6;00am Sharp You Have A Wonderful Day You And The Staff . Eileen.

Savannah, MI   May 28th, 2009 10:01 am ET

I love those people who post, "There just dogs!" that is totally insensitive to animals.. Okay, let Michael Vick go back playing football and the millions he make can go towards to all the families who have lost their jobs this past year..

cody   June 1st, 2009 4:24 pm ET

Wow truely shocking comments on here! Guess Iam not "enlightened" What Vic did was horrible and don't condone it. It looks he paid his debt and there are many players that seemed to have done worse and still play. There is this attitude is this country that animals equal human. This is what shocks me!!! I can tell you if I am driving down the road and I have to do an extremey dangerous maneuver in my auto to miss a dog on the road I am NOT doing it., a human I would. My 2 cents.

Nixa   June 2nd, 2009 8:56 am ET

I agree that what he did was absolutely WRONG and I am a dog lover! . Although, we are all human and we make mistakes. There is not one person that has not done something that they absolutely regret! Yes, some are more extreme than others, but that is why we have punishments. If everyone had all of thier mistakes blasted for the world to see we would all be walking around with our heads down in shame! But, we all learn from our mistakes. Everyone should get a chance to prove themselves.

Mr. Britt   June 3rd, 2009 3:37 am ET

@ Helen, using the race card just shows that you do not have a valid point and must stoop low to come up with something to say.. Go back to school, get an education and come back when you can hold a "grown-up" conversation. have a blessed day :)

Mr. Britt   June 3rd, 2009 3:41 am ET

btw, police arrested 3 people (white) in my state 3 years ago for dog fighting, 2 of which are STILL in jail...and i live in mississippi. Either way, vick got off very easy and i hope he never takes another snap. GO GIANTS!

marla thomas from texas and florida   June 4th, 2009 9:22 am ET

Vick needs to be publicly put put into a pit with a man that is five times larger than he is and every one put bets on a winner over and over again. Then if he looses we need to discard him like trash by hannging him as he did the white dog that the news showed over and over and over again the agony they must have gone through. I just absloutely do not see how a felon can get out of jail early and expect a gold pot i have a white one as you do. It all smells the same even the death of the animals and a human . give poor ole vick overs and watch how history repeats. also ypu can have my season tickets back if he plays again.

Sam   June 6th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

I would like to know why CNN hasnt posted anything about the current Nutro cat food recall. If it was someone's tater chips being recalled it would be all over the news but oh I guess its just pet food.....again. Reports of sick cats from the food here: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2009/05/nutro_foia06.html and the FDA recall press release here: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm154317.htm

traci   June 6th, 2009 7:38 pm ET

Vick deserves NO special treatment after prison. Especially when he probably had special treatment in prison. Be like everyone else who gets out and has to try to pick up there lives. You are a nobody now except a dog killer. Good luck trying to get a real job you patethetic excuse of a human being. If the NFL picks him back up, then they are just as pathetic. NFL is a PRIVILEGE!!!!

Traci Lillis, Homewood, Il..

Paul C   June 8th, 2009 8:10 am ET

Mr. Vick doesn't "deserve" anything but what the law provides. Deserve, just another word for entitlement. He needs to earn a new reputation, and a spot in the NFL or society for that matter.

get real   July 25th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

all of you people who wanna judge need to get Fu**ing real. THE man made a mistake, but one that was allowed in many countries for years. 2nd.. it was dogs, not humans, what about players who have killed driving intoxicated or been convicted of assault. Those are much more serious crimes. I hope some day all of you are convicted and then judged!!!!!

Adriana   July 27th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

For everyone who needs someone for their children look up to......you need to be turning off the television during football season, during basketball season, well just turn it off, you have players in every sport who have commited crimes, Michael Vick did more time than Stalworth did for vehicular manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol..........everyone got paid so it's done and over with ...........everyone wants justice for these dogs I think they got it. How about no time served by chris brown for beating rhianna to a pulp and choking her they put her on cover girl commercials and he still gets to sing....what a joke and I am pleased he has been reinstated........GO VICK.

Dave Smith   July 28th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Yes he paid his debt under the law as it is. Unfortunately, our laws are not stringent enough in cases regarding cruelty to animals. I personally will sign any list, or join any group making his life as miserable as possible moving forward. He deserves nothing. Short of him giving all his income to the prevention of cruelty to animals, I would prefer to see him indigent and with a sign on a street corner.

Bennett   July 30th, 2009 6:42 am ET

well, well, well, what next? I sure am glad that the rich athletes get sooooo many breaks. I mean don't they deserve all our praise, for being such great roll models. Like pitting to poor animals against each other, somes times to the animals death., while so called humans look on with shouts of pleasure at the blood bath, not to mention the animals that don't measure up are thrown away. sOULDHOOL

sN

CBH69   July 30th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

here's the way I see it . there are alot of people out there that don't have kids and their pets are the closest thing to a child that they have . dogs are part of people's families and are their children. they are just as important to some people as a real human being. there was a story a few years ago were a homeless man was trying to get out of the cold and found a car in a store's parking lot that was unlocked . he climbed into the car , not to steal it but to keep warm . the owner came out to get in the car and saw the homeless man inside the car with the door locked . the police was called and when they got there they tried to get him out but he wouldn't open the door . finally they got him out and arrested him and he was charged with not only breaking into another person's vehicle but he was also charged for holding someone hostage because the owner had her dog in the car . that charge to me may have been a little to much but my point is that dog was part of her family and it was just as bad as if her kid would've been in the car instead . Vick payed his price for what he did but it still doesn't make it right . if he would've threw two children in the ring and made them fight to the death , got caught , went to prison over it , then got released would you want him to come back to the NFL then ? he got fired from him job , he needs to find another just like everybody else would have to do if they lost their job . he doesn't need to be in the spotlight anymore . he is NOT a role model and he will bring a bad immage to the NFL and to all sports . I guess as long as you're an atheleate you can do anything , serve a little time and then pick up right where you left off .

CBH69   July 30th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

I HAVE READ EVERYBODY'S COMMENTS AND TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE UPSET BECAUSE SOME OF US DON'T THINK IT'S RIGHT, LET ME CLEAR ONE THING UP . I BET THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE THAT ARE AGAINST HIM WILL AGREE THAT HE SRVED HIS TIME AND HE DESERVES A CHANCE TO BE ABLE TO FEED HIS FAMILY BUT NOT BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT ! THERE ARE MILLIONS OF JOBS OUT THERE FOR HIM . LET HIM GO WORK IN A WAREHOUSE OR A LUMBER YARD OR SOMETHING TO START HIS LIFE OVER BUT NOT AS A ROLE MODEL OR COME RIGHT BACK TO WHERE HE LEFT OFF . IF YOU COMMITED A CRIME , SERVED YOUR TIME AND WAS RELEASED DO YOU THINK YOU COULD GO BACK TO YOUR JOB ? LET THE MAN LIVE HIS LIFE IN HIS OWN QUIET CORNER MAKING A LIVING JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE AND LET THE REAL STARS SHINE !

Chuck Smith   July 30th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

We have had season tickets for the Bucs for 22 years and would give them up if the Bucs acquired Vick. He should get a job cleaning out kennels for the rest of his natural life, which is longer than his dogs lived.

Rhonda Reely   July 31st, 2009 3:51 pm ET

This is the face of EVIL.

He is not a good role model.

Any team that would have him.
I will not watch nor support. And I am certain
most American's agree with me.

Evil is as EVIL does-
keep him away from children-animals and the elderly.

Tony   August 14th, 2009 7:21 am ET

I am sadly disappointed that Vick is being allowed back in the game. After what he and his cronies did to the poor animals, he deserves to be the doghouse for a lot longer than he wasn in jail for. One less fan for the team!!!

Candy   August 18th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

I think the NFL needs to reevaluate their reinstatement policy!!! There have been players that have done less than Michael Vick has done and been permantely suspended. I also dont understand how he can say he's sorry or disgusted by his actions, like he woke up and realized this was torture and heartless....I mean, how do you go to prison and get a heart? Well, needless to say i'm an animal lover and could never hurt an animal and it would not take prison for me to realize that drowning and electricuting defenseless animals is wrong and I also think it takes a cold blooded, heartless individual to do such torture. As far as a 2nd chance, I believe in them, and I believe in forgiveness. However,I just dont see the remorse or think that he has paid his dues or that justice has been served.Just think of the pain, toture and suffering!!!!
