It's tax day! How should the government spend your money?

Posted: 11:35 AM ET

TV/Web Producer Kate Taylor

Hey folks, it's tax day! Regardless of who you are, you've coughed up a significant portion of your earnings to the federal government. You know the saying, only two things are inevitable: death and taxes. So, given that you can't get out of handing the money you earned with your blood sweat and tears over to the government, the least you could ask for is a bit of say in how they spend all that dough.

Oh America, tax time is never good for our relationship.
Oh America, tax time is never good for our relationship.

We asked Morning Express viewers how they'd like to have their tax dollars spent. Read through a selection of their responses below, and share your budget preferences in the comments field below.

- Taxes should help eliminate poverty and homelessness and increase access to health care for everyone. Duh! :) – Scott in Rochester, New York

- I want my tax dollars to stay in my pocket. Lower taxes fuels economic recovery not higher government spending. – Fred in Tampa

- I would like to see tax money used to put a temporary halt on foreclosures until we can get a more stable economy.

- I think tax dollars should go towards helping students be able to continue or start college, – Elanna in Myrtle Beach, Florida

- I want my tax dollar to go for new or revitalized railways–passenger and freight. This would create many new jobs and be better for the environment.

- I would like to see tax dollars go to anything but Bailouts. Let companies that aren't making it fail have how we learn from mistakes. – Trevor in Ohio

- I'd like for my tax money to go back in my pocket, but since that's not realistic I'd like to see it go to health care for all Americans.

- How about our tax dollars going toward the foundation of a Nat'l Peace Academy? – Randall in Austin, TX

- I'd like to see the tax dollars help with health insurance for all. It is getting way too costly, especially for those with pre-existing conditions.

- How about giving some tax money to teachers grades K-12? I'm a nurse and think teachers are way underpaid.

- I think our tax money should to education, without a formal education our future will amount to nothing. – Willie in Pensacola, Florida

- I believe tax dollars should go toward community festivals and events. This would bring people out of their homes and create a better sense of community.

- I would like my tax dollars to actually find cures for cancer and Alzheimer's.

- I would like my tax money to go to alternative energy research so in the future Exxon won't reap huge profits from helping pollute the planet. – Chad

- Mike from Sacramento. I want to see my tax dollars spent on keeping our bridges from collapsing and repaving our roads. Or wind energy research.

- I'm too young to pay taxes now, but I'd like to see my parents' and my future tax dollars spent on education, and AIDS research and treatment. Cure it!

- I would like to see my tax money spent on me. As a full time student who can't even find an internship to work for free, much less get paid, I need help!

- The only way to fix everyone's problems is to rid the world of money but, we all live in the real world and human greed won't let that happen ... yet. – Mike

- I think our taxes should go to the military and to creating a better standard of living for our nation.

- I would rather my taxes were spent on cookies than pay for some crook to go on vacation. – TK

- I'd like to see my tax dollars go to projects that are aimed to saving the environment.

- I agree I would rather see my tax dollars go towards Railway systems. – Jim in Pennsylvania
autism research and support! – Bekka

- I would like to see my tax money spent in ANY way that really matters, not some little bailout. – Jeremy in Missouri

The American tax dollar should go to better the lives of those who pay for it!! Improve infrastructure and social programs. Certainly, before we start giving money to large companies going belly-up.

I need to see my country in perfect health. I also would like to know that the money isn't waisted that we as a country are happy and able to work together. Jon Phillip Boulton in Paducah Ky

I'm out of work. I have to deplete the little I had left in my IRA, & I've just written two checks; one to my State & one to the Federal Treasury, for a total of $12,000.

I'm broke with no job, and I want my tax money back, instead of letting our idiot Congress waste it on pig odor studies !!!!

Michael Harwell Huggins   April 16th, 2009 12:59 am ET

I would like my tax dollars out of the hands of an out of touch government & staying in my possession.
I have a proven track record of giving to causes (that hold my beliefs) & my less fortunate fellow man.
The government has a proven record of throwing HUGE amounts of cash to the wind, under the guise of "doing the right thing".

Greg   April 16th, 2009 8:23 am ET

Give the money back to the people who make under $250K. If we can afford to start spending again the economy will recover.

- The Boston Tea Party Revival –

I would like my tax dollars to remain my dollars. Obama needs to stop taxing me and my kids. Do the right thing, prevent socialism.

denie   April 16th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Leave in to CNN to bury the story about the tax protest yesterday.
All across the country people of every political party protested the governments misuse of our taxes. Yet CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC tries
to marginalize those who believe spending your way out of debt is insanity. News flash, CNN should report the news or just admit to being strictly a commentary show, that includes news you don't agree with. Remember when news organizations were unbias?

ross paasche   April 16th, 2009 10:39 am ET

So the ' tea party ' reporter was trying to force in her comment "sir did you know you are getting a $400. tax rebate.
Well sister, we all know that. But did you know as a result of these 'gifts' my property taxes are going up 10%, my boats mooring fee quadrupled, my state gas tax went up .14 per gallon, my federal gas tax is going up, every other form of taxation i encounter is rising steeply and far offsets the gift of ' $400. " dollars from the fed.
Wake up, you oughta at least know what we know when reporting the facts.

Scott   April 16th, 2009 10:41 am ET

That's an easy question: on world peace. Not waging war to get it, but finding peace in our time.

julie bates   April 16th, 2009 10:45 am ET

My husband and I both working made 62k last year and paid 6000.00 in taxes. I could of put peiople in my community to work by getting a new roof. It's a no brainer. I feel like I am asking my dad for an allowance of my own money

Chris   April 16th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

...anything but failing u.s. automakers. Lawmaker's salaries should be determined based on how efficently they use OUR money. But I guess the only way to propose that is write my congressman? hmm

Dolores   April 16th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

I saw the interview done by CNN at one of the tea parties and the CNN reporter was rude to man she had ask a question to. If you don't want an answer don't ask the question. She appeared to be uninformed of what the tea parties are about and what the these people want the politicians to know. STOP spending the american people's money on things that are not needed (pork) and don't disregard our rights that were given to us by the founding fathers thru the CONSTITUTION of these United States. The people at these tea parties are also looking out for the future generations of this country, as the founding fathers were looking out for this generation when they wrote the constitution. Just to keep the reporter informed some has to pay for the bail out money and it will be the future generations who will be burden with this debt.

Charles C Ledesma   April 17th, 2009 7:34 am ET

It really doesn't matter how I want the government to spend my tax dollars.Their going to spend it anyway that want.Maybe there's a leech farm somewhere that needs help.

Margot Watson   April 17th, 2009 7:36 am ET

Your suggestion to Susan Boyle that she should spend her money on a makeover with in poor taste, rude, and inappropriate. She is happy with her appearance and it is not for you to suggest otherwise!

mike   April 17th, 2009 9:43 am ET

Yea, hold all the TEA parties you want. You have the right to protest. But no change will come without the common man or woman voting the incompotents out of office. It happened in California, Look what happened to Gray Davis and yet California is no better.

Woody   April 17th, 2009 10:09 am ET

How about realizing we've already spent all of OUR money, what you guys are talking about spending here is OUR KIDS money and OUR GRANDKIDS money. Shame on all of you.

jb1879   April 27th, 2009 6:12 am ET

It should be spent helping the people who paid taxes instead of giving it to people who don't want to work!!!!

rich   April 29th, 2009 7:58 am ET

It should go to the american people not these sorry ceo's and bankrupt companys...

Lenny in Jeffersonville, IN   April 29th, 2009 9:36 am ET

I definitely don't want to see my tax money go into the pockets of those citi group folks who have the audacity to ask for bonus money.

Dianne Stull   May 1st, 2009 9:58 am ET

I wish someone would investigate the deaths in our country from MERSA. My brother died last month from this staph infection that resisted antibiotics. The young man in the ICU bed next to him died the following day. This is a health issue that should recieve more coverage. Thank you
