President to announce new strategy for Afghanistan

Posted: 05:45 AM ET

Producer Aimee

We’re expecting President Obama to announce his new strategy for the war in Afghanistan during remarks at 9:25 a.m. Friday. During the presidential campaign, you may recall, Obama called Iraq a “dangerous distraction” and said more emphasis should be placed on Afghanistan.

Senior administration officials have said the president’s new strategy will include sending an additional 4,000 troops to Afghanistan, on top of the 17,000 troops the president has already ordered. The additional troops will be responsible for training and building the Afghan Army and police force. According to officials, President Obama also plans to call on Congress to pass a bill that triples U.S. aid to Pakistan to $1.5 billion a year, over five years. And his strategy includes new benchmarks for both Afghanistan and Pakistan. The administration is still developing the specifics for these benchmarks, but officials are calling them “the most explicit demands” ever presented to the Afghan and Pakistani governments. President Obama’s strategy includes no timeline for withdrawing troops.

We want to know what you think about this renewed focus on the war in Afghanistan. Do you agree with President Obama… has Iraq been a “distraction?” Should more troops be sent to Afghanistan? And, is this announcement timely… or should the president be focusing solely on the economy? Send us your comments! We’ll be continuing the discussion throughout the day on Morning Express with Robin Meade.

First of all, the presidents job doesn't give him the luxury to "focus solely on one issue". Considering the issues that he inherited, I think President Obama is doing a very decent job! We have needed more troops in Afghanistan from the very beginning, if this country was serious about "the war on terrorism". As much as I don't want our troops to be in another country, I'm happy to see that this administration is focusing on the where the taliban is actually located.

I don't believe Iraq is a distraction, they never said that when Iraq was the main focus, but i do think that more should be televised about really happens in Afghanistan, not just makes for good television. More troops should defenatly be sent to Afghanistan...I hear bits and pieces of whats going on over there from my fiancee who is stationed there. The constant moving and lack of sleep it all gets to those guys who are doing jobs that they weren't even trained for. they are sent there to do one job and can't do that job because the lack of troops is causing them to another job. More troops should defenatly be sent to Afghanistan to take the pressure off the troops who are there. There were guys sitting in Iraq for months doing nothing more then patroling for a few hours a day when they could of been in Afghanistan doing more. As far as uping the aid money to Pakistan I believe its stupid to give money to a country that is aiding the people that are causing the problems in Afghanistan.

I cringe at the thought of any more troops being sent into the area. I believe the focus should have never come off Afghanistan, isn't Osama Bin Laden still free to lead his Terrorists'? Seems as it is a "dim" memory of why we were there in the first place!!! New York City ring a bell to anyone in Washington?

President Obama is oneof the great speech makers of our time-sadly that is his greatest "distraction". Since taking office he has been all over the map regarding policy;except with his ability to spend copious amounts of money quickly!

I invite the help in Afghanistan as we in Canada can sure use some help over there, our troops are too few and we're losing them fast and the only way to take the taliban out,or at least try to give our troops some help and support over there as we support both the USA and Canada troops for all they do:)

Maybe if we pull out of Afghanistan completely then Osama won't be so cowardly and come out of his hole and then we can send strategic strikes in to get him and his henchmen, and maybe that will do more than anything else to break Al Quada's grip on that country.

NITEBUG   March 27th, 2009 7:54 am ET

As long as Obama continues to work on pulling troops out of Iraq,I don't mind sending more to Afghanistan. That's the place Osama is suppose to be hiding and we need to get him. The war in Iraq was started based on a lie and we should have never went there.

L Ballard   March 27th, 2009 7:56 am ET

Afghanistan should never been ignored. It's now a playground for every terrorist org. on the planet. It's time to leave Iran to themselves (they said so) and stop the increasing threat in other areas. The 6 billion also goes to American contractors and parts suppliers. This would stimulate the economy. After all "war is good business".

BR Smith   March 27th, 2009 8:08 am ET

Robin,
Great progress is being made in Afghanistan. Small support and trainging teams is the best way to defeat the Taliban, not large troop formations. Afghanistan is best left to the Special Operations and Intelligence Communities. An influx of large formations will simply marginalize the local Afghanis and develop support for the Taliban and provide more havens deeper in the Afghan territory.

Didn't we learn anything in Viet Nam? It's time to teach them how to fight their own war and get home. I don't care how much they train to overthroe capitalism. Tey can't beat us on our own turf. More emphasis on national security at home!!! If they develop Nukes, we bomb them out. We can reach them from here.

jochs   March 27th, 2009 8:40 am ET

I thought our original mission over there was to get Osama, not to free Iraq. You can't win two fights at the same time.Obama needs to focus, focus, focus.

HELLO,

I AM NOT IN FAVOR OF SENDING MORE TROOPS OUT TO ANY COUNTRY LET ALONE AFGHANISTAN.

PRESIDENT OBAMA NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE HIS ENERGY
HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, ESPECIALLY ON THE ECONOMY.

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY FRONTS STARING THE PRESIDENT
OBAMA IN THE FACE.........THE U.S. ECONOMY, THE WAR IN IRAQ,
AND WHEN THE TROOPS ARE COMING HOME FOR GOOD.......
AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY......HE STILL NEEDS TO FOCUS HIS
ENERGY ON THE U.S. ECONOMY.....BECAUSE IF THE UNITED STATES FALLS THE WHOLE WORLD WILL FALL....ALOT OF COUNTRIES ARE LOOKING TO THE UNITED STATES RIGHT NOW....
AND WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO.

LET'S SUPPORT AMERICA I SAY....TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK....PEOPLE.........

We won WWII, in the Atlantic and the Pacific, so yes, we can win two wars at the same time. I gues i will be packing by bags again this year and heading back.

Obama went to afgan. because China is coming to terms witht he US, since their give away of the Wepons of Mass Desturction of Nuclear Warfare that Bush was looking for, The Afgan have a valley way to China and is easy for them to communicate with China. China gave up. This world was so corupt but is straighting out and N. Korea and those thugs in afgan who think China will help them. China is not going to help and the Afgan are beinning their 100 year war is almost over. The Afgan dont have the funds because of the alliance with the United Nations and the United Kingdom. This is all because of the New US currency Basis which is leading to a somewhat harsh agreement on world currency
