What career would you pursue if fired?

Posted: 01:13 PM ET

TV/Web Producer Kate Taylor

As Richard Roth reports, taxi driver schools are bursting at the seams in New York city these days, filled with people recently laid off from their original careers. As one new cabbie, Michael Dick, fired from his job at banking giant UBS reports, he has enjoyed the change. Dick says, "Working at UBS I made a lot more money. However, I had ten times the amount of stress."

What would you do if you lost your job? Hit the high seas?

I'm currently a stay-at-home-mom who has done clerical/office work since high school. I would like to go to school to get a 2-year degree in Construction Technology and become a carpenter. After working in that field for a while, I might want to get bachelor's and master's degrees in Architecture.

The political arena is a hornets nest , a bad choice for now. The

most that has been stimulated , is a ton of contraversy and finger

pointing.

You have to look deep within yourself. Pull all of the knowledge

about your skills out , find a fit in this toxic economy. Make hard

choices and take a few risk , step out of your box.

Change is what you need , change is what you ultImately will have to

create in your life. No one can live your life but you.

"This is survival in its rawes form ", unfortunately for now.

If I lost my job being a low-paid-long-hour-hair-losing-employee, I think I apply for the millionaires position down the road. They seem to have really good benefits.

I would be a rapper. Check out this story about a friend of mine, who was a marine and couldn't find a job because of his mental illness.

I was fired after getting injured on my job of 15 years, after 7 surgeries and the Doctors o.k. to return to my job they terminated me, there is NO job securtiy in this country, I took my passion for landscaping and started my own little business, this way I am not in an office under the constant eyes of bosses that are trying to climb the ladder of their won success while stepping on everyone on the way. Plus being outside and meeting really great people and doing what I have always loved is great.

I am 44 and recently left a 30-year on-air radio and television career (yes, I started in high school) to pursue a career in retail management. If I were to do one thing I've always wanted, I would host a television show that could change people's lives for the better. I've always tried to help those less fortunate than me, and this might be a good way to do it.

Lamar/lake city,sc   March 24th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Robin,I recently lost my job as an assistant manager for rent to own company after 10 years on the job.I decided to go to school and behind the wheel of a semi.

Elisha   March 24th, 2009 9:36 am ET

If I was fired. Humm well, I am a cosmetologist so id prob. look for annother salon, but the movie industry is still hot! So id prob. go back to my agency & try my luck there. I live in Utah & our mayer, or whoever is in charge, decided to use some of our states stimulus money to invest in the movie industry! I could think of other places to spend that money, such as schools, finish roads, put people back to work, and or increase our state income tax refunds!!! This whole stimulus thing seems like the rich continue to get richer and the poor just stay poor or get poorer!!!!

My Plan B – either personal trainer or Veterinarian.

miko   March 24th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Aloha!! I actually watch your show at midnight,Hawaii time (6 AM EST).

I've had to reinvent myseld many times. That's the "key" to unlocking what many people know me as "what to do with what I've been given".
1) Childhood home flooded many timesgrowing up..each flood took a part of me!! (Attended high school with legend George Lucas, his sister, Wendy was my classmate.
2) Enrolled & licensed Cosmetology School-worked at that for 2 years. 1st marriage: Former Marine, "KIA" (Killed in Action"-stepped on landmine -Vietnam) – became widow and baby on way
3) My child became extremely ill-became more aware of hospital actions
4) Reinvented myself and became a "ward clerk" at hospital (transcribing into laymens' terms the various Drs. orders each morning
5) Worked 2nd shift to learn & assist in labor & delivery
6) Moved to Maui from California-became "Concierge", and "Waitress"
7) Had to re-invent myself again in yet another field as "Concierge" & "bartending" position became open for resort "Kauai" location-moved to Kauai-reinventing again. Worked "BOTH" positions 18 hrs day x 7-10 days off & on with "Convention groups". Learned hosting Conventions in the Hawaiian Islands.
8) November 1982-got slammed by Hurricane Ewa & lost everything except car, clothes (1 change of clothing)
9) Reinvented toassist each other in rebuilding the "island of Kauai" with neighbors and friends until Sept.1984.
10) Lateral transfer (request permitted) to transfer back to "island of Maui" as bartender, regained "Conserige" business on Maui,
11) Remarried gentle guy (Dec'84), local tennis pro and restaurant manager-we both worked "Groups" on junkits to the Hawaiian Islands for Conventions
12) Maintained Concierge & tending bar (I dislike taste of alcohol; & get 2-3 days sick-soI am a non-drinker of alcohol)...husband assisted his "Entrepenaurs' in opening new Thai Restaurant"
Worked at Drs. office days, was one of 1st "female bartenders" in Maui County nights.
13) Merged "Concierge" into "group travel",& created a travel agency
14) Had too little $$ to buy home, so we rent & traveled by Cruiseship
Learned the ins/outs of cruising...better for sales when market is stronger!
15) Loss of economy- (Junket's)-"turned into home base "cruise & travel agency" via Internet.
16) Sell on eBay DVD collection & other "stuff" we don't need/use. New merchandise purchased from cruises (Asia,Australia, South Pacific Islands)
17) currently in "discussions and options" where to go from here
just holding our own for now-but searching

**Important point: It did NOT take 2-6 months to get the USA "INTO the poor economy, now we must be patient with new administration and work with them,(NOT sit around waiting on "stimulus) move ON with lives. If everyone tookcare of "the actionsof their own household",the world would possibly be a "better place"!!

There's work out there... we as a nation, must help one another-& when possible, pay other persons that help showing "appreciation"!!

feeling the pain   March 25th, 2009 4:26 am ET

Robin, Im 45 years old and Ive been working since I was 17. I have a permanent back injury that I have been working with for the last 10 years now and it gets worse every year. I think if I were to get fired I would apply for Social Security Disability considering the fact I have paid into it for nearly 30 years now and there probably wont be any Social Security available when I retire....???

kannmann   March 25th, 2009 7:15 am ET

If I were fired from my job, I think I would take a vow of poverty and volunteer to be Robin's personal assistant. I absolutely adore her and I think it would be awesome to be at her mercy. :D

efain torres   March 25th, 2009 10:43 am ET

well with today's economic problems i would pick a career that wont slow down. I believe it is the health care. Senior care because people are just getting older obviously . Also sad to say the fast food. I mean for as long as people are hungry.

J.Garrish   March 26th, 2009 10:18 am ET

I teach middle school science and social studies. I am in total agreement with the other middle school teacher who wrote that she I would be working at the barn. This would be where there is nothing but serenity and bliss.

Laurel   March 26th, 2009 10:34 am ET

I finally had a job I wanted to retire in (Edmonton, AB, Canada). I was there 5 and a half years. My job was eliminated. On my wedding anniversary in February. Going to leave administrative/office management positions. Going to apply at Home Depot or similar retail outlets – at least I'll be able to wear my jeans and save $$ on office clothes which will make up the shortfall in wages somewhat. I hope. By the way, I worked for a very large international company. Scary.

Michael   March 26th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

I began a career change about 5 years ago – mostly because I didn't want to be turning 60 and thinking "I should have tried..." The last recession caught at the bottom of the blue collar ladder as a carpenter, this recession has me at a reasonably safe, salaried position in a growing business with definite advancement possiblities. Did I know the market – no, but I knew it couldn't last. All I can say is if you are thinking of doing it (changing careers) well, my only regret is I didn't do it sooner. What was my career change? I headed for the airlines as a pilot, but I'm teaching aviation for now even though I did get offers after I completed the training – teaching has turned out to be more lucrative and has become a great stepping stone toward my long term goal of flying corporate. Airplanes are never going to go away, and no matter my long term goal – I can now do what I should have been doing all my life. Therefore, my advice...follow your heart as we all know deep down what we want to do.

Daniel M.   March 29th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

I worked as an industrial mechanic for 10 years and got laid off. I went back to technical college and got a maintenance degree. After looking for 3 months with no luck I landed a job selling cars. That's not exactly booming right now.. I write a little poetry in my spare time. I have one entilted.. The Blue Collar Worker which relates to at least 75% of the workers in America.

CHARLIE   March 31st, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I am a service manager in a new car dealership. No stability there. I am also an EMT and that is where I would go. For the time being anyway....

o.k   April 1st, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Will go back to school to finish my Ph.D. – and may stay in academia afterwards

Rio Zirconia   April 5th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Get fired and be an 'hln viewer!!'
