Free Tax Help Saturday

Posted: 05:52 AM ET

Business Correspondent Jennifer Westhoven

This weekend you can get free tax help straight from the horse's mouth – the IRS.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the IRS is offering free tax preparation as long as you make $42,000 a year or less.

Normally the IRS is closed on weekends, but it’s opening more than 250 local IRS offices and bringing in a thousand tax-prep volunteers to answer your questions and help you make a payment plan.

There are a few new rules you may need help with. If you lost your job this year, you might qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, the average benefit is usually around $2,000. There’s also the new help if you’re buying a home.

And, if you already know you’re not going to be able to pay them, the IRS says, please, just let them know early and they’ll try to wok with you on an installment plan. You might avoid some stiff penalties that way.

To find one of the offices near you: check their website, www.irs.gov.

Good morning Jennifer
I have a question for the financial group on HLN. With all of the help that is being talked about for home owners no one has mentioned that there are still very strict standards to receive the help. I agree that rules are needed to weed out those that are just not trying.
I have gone through 5 different refinance brokers this last week and have found that if the credit score is not almost perfect and there are NO late payments there still isn't any help.
I know that my family is just a speck in the many folks that have the same situation. Those of us that are fighting to save our homes are going to have to make some choices in bills. How can we be told to pay the mortgage first and not have enough left to pay the electric, home heating fuel, and, lord forbid, food for those that have kids. Social services will be on the door step before you can say boo to relieve you of the kids. Frustration is almost unbelievable.
I know that there are millions of listeners that would like to see a story on the side of the story that affects those that are working hard and not up to the PERFECT standards of our banking standards.

This comment is about the money problem in America. It is totally
absurd how the people of this country continues to get abused by
the government and political system of this nation America. The
money problem exist in this country because the Bill Gates
and Donnald Trumps and even Ted Turners of this country are
not seriously giving help to people who are struggling with
a measly job and also Oprah and Obama too . Think about all of the high money making music movie and sport stars in this country
who are just concerned about their bling and don't give a damn about
nobody but themselves. The real blame however should
go to the media because this is never addressed in a real
straight up talk. So what is the solution well we just have
strong and keep on praying for Jesus Christ to intervene
to change this present March 30th 2009 money situation yeah
well before things get worse call up on Jesus. He is our
present help in the time of need.

Hi Robin
I started smoking back in 1974 my wife started in 1979 we've been married for 26 years. We we're 2 pack a day smokers until cigs got to be $2.00 or more per pack back in 1992....We decided to go cold turkey and dump or cig habit. We replaced the money we were spending on cigs with a NEW MINI VAN that we needed for our family. I told My wife if either of us went back to cigs the van would go back because we couldn't afford both. Well we loved the van and we kept it till 2001 and put about 300,000 miles on it before we sold it But we laugh at the price of cigs today no one needs cigs. anyone that buys any item that is advertised as bad for your health should be ready to pay the price or QUIT...

The meltdown and this recession are all about jobs. Toxic Assets aren’t toxic when we earn what we earned when we took out the loans. When your income is reduced your ability to pay is reduced.

Our jobs have been sent overseas or given to visa holders who help to send them overseas.
We’ve had some 910,000+ H-1B Visas issued since 2001.

Even though the U.S. is not legally required to issue a single H-1B Visa (Yes, that's right not a single one), we will give away another 65,000+ US high-tech jobs via next Wednesday's U.S. CIS H-1B Non-Immigrant lottery. U.S. workers and U.S. taxpayers will be the April Fools.

Outsourcing and the High-Tech/Skilled Worker Visa giveaway have decimated our purchasing power, our economy, our tax base, and our nation's future.

Having highly-skilled well educated U.S. workers who are unable to find jobs because they’ve been awarded to H-1B Visa holders is a National Asset gone toxic.

We we (my wife and I) have to pay back the Making Work Pay Credit on our 2009 Tax return?

We are a married couple fillig jointly. We will get paid the Making Work Pay Credit twice, up to $800 each because we file jointly and we both work.

Charles J. Derevenko   April 1st, 2009 3:13 am ET

jen here's something to think about.
40 million workers over 50 yrs old.
give them each 1 million to quit jobs ends unemployment problem
make each buy a new car manufactured in USA end of auto problem
make each buy house or pay off mortgage end of housing problem

could it be any easier

This comment has to do with the "tax credit" that will start showing up in our checks. This extra money is due to the fact that the withholding has been reduced, however, unless the 2009 tax tables are adjusted down, the Feds will get it all back come tax return time. Please do your viewers a service and alert them to this unreported fact!

I currently have a mortgage on a mobile home at 11% interest. How do I go about refinancing and knowing which company is reputable? I had been paying extra money when possible and the mortgage company informed me it was a "simple interest only" mortgage. Any money I pay in addition to the regular payment would be put into a separate account but not applied to principle. This account, they said, would be available in the event i needed extra money to make the usual payment. Does this sound legal to you? I have never heard of such a thing.

ron myers   April 3rd, 2009 9:25 pm ET

this 10-15.00 "tax break" are the federal tax tables changing so i will owe last taxes in 2009 or will i have to pay back this "rebate" when i file my 2009 taxes?

thanks

I am just angry at the fact that when the government states a family is supposed to get a certain amount for the tax stimulus, first, they don't give all that is promised, but then, they take the remainder that wasn't given out of your tax return. My husband is Active Duty Air Force and I am an Air Force Veteran. We have 2 kids. We were told that we were going to get $1800.00. $1200 for both of us adult that worked, and $300.00 for each child. We got $600.00, but the IRS deducted the remainder of the stimulus from our tax return...even though we never received it. I am sure that the money was used for something that we either didn't support, or for someone to have many children and live off of the Government dime. When is the government going to make good on it's word when it comes to the stimulus plan?
