Do you know how to spot a scam?

Posted: 11:29 AM ET

Business Correspondent Jennifer Westhoven

It didn’t take long for the criminals to try and use the latest headlines to rip you off.

ALT TEXT

Don't end up here due to some online scam.

I got this email yesterday, from scammers posing as the IRS, offering to “help” me get my stimulus money. Surprisingly, thousands of people are still falling for these phonies.

Can you spot the red flags?

From: Internal Revenue Service [taxrefund@irs.gov]
Subject: Submit your economic stimulus payment online form

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a Stimulus Payment.

Please submit the Stimulus Payment Online Form in order to process it.

To submit your Stimulus Payment form, please download the document attached to your email.

See how they even tried to mimic the IRS' website? But the IRS will *never* contact you via email about something official. So right off the bat, you know this is fake.

I never opened the "form" – That would be like asking a vampire to come on in! But it’s easy to imagine what they would ask you for – your social security number, maybe your bank router number. They say they want to send you money - more like steal your money.

See that word "download." That’s like a stranger saying, "C'mere kiddie, step into my car." Run! The download could have a virus or malware or who knows what.

If you want to turn the tables on these guys and get the IRS on their tail, forward these emails to the *real* IRS – phishing@irs.gov.

And finally – anytime a "bank" sends you an email saying they want to get you money quickly and easily - start sniffing. Odds are, there’s a stink somewhere in the room.

I think he intimatedto his friends that his marriage was off.
He is awfully perfumed.
Do you know how to spot a scam?
I do not know it.

If it's on TV it usually is a scam. Like Video Professor that advertises the first lesson of any program FREE but then you find out that it cost you $189.00 (they have nothing about this in the ad). Even in writing on AT&T letter head like AT&T offering a bundle package for $60.00 then 3 months later you find that it cost $80..00 instead because one tiny piece of the bundle, like Call Waiting DELUXE, is not available in your area. Don't get me started on all the Ambulance Chasers on TV. AND, the FCC lets them all get away with it!!!!!!

As a local computer tech I'll admit I've seen a lot of scams like this that actually WORK with the growing elderly population that is going online.... Its sad but when you get an email that "looks" official its usually not when it comes to email. Make sure to know what your grandparents are doing online.... its scarier than you think.

When it comes to emails and phone calls, if it was unsolicited, it is usually a scam. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. But what can you expect when you take discipline out of the schools, God out of the schools and public places. When presidents lie to congress, congressmen don't pay their taxes and no one seems to care to hold them accountable. When young people can't hold down a job because they were never taught that you have to do your best or you fail. WHAT ELSE DO YOU EXPECT PEOPLE!!!!

I can solve your bailout for 300 million or less. The last time they gave out 700 billion the big wigs got big bonuses and took $400,000 spa trips. Now they want to do it again. If they would give the citzens of the U.S. each One Million we could pay off our bills buy new cars pay off the morgages, that would be no more than 300 million. My math is poor but I believe this would be less than a half of one percent of thier 700 billion dollar payout.

Robin/Jennifer,

I was wondering if you could tell me a little about the peer to peer lending sites they have out there. Are they scams? Is it a good idea? I am looking for a small loan, and had heard that this type of lending might be a good option for me. Any info. is much appreciated. Thanks is advance for your help.

Thank you for your thoughts on the IRS. You know, my feeling is that "scam" and "IRS" are synonomous terms these days, just the facts here. Do you know that out of almost forty tax refunds they have owed me since 1968, I have only received two back in the mail? Every year they find some way to not send me the check, and, with compounded interest (at their "rate", 7.5 percent per year} they now owe me a couple of hundred thousand dollars in back payments, too. Think I will ever see a penny of that money? Not a chance, right, Jennifer? So, my feeling here is that maybe that scam was the IRS, or, more to the point, a former IRS employee who had access to their mail and files. It would be worse, except for the fact that our entire Treasury Department and Federal Reserve System is now being run as a scam as well.

Bernie Madoff (who is trying to "made off") with investors money is slick. Madoff is trying to keep the remaining funds that are his wife's? Yea right. He should be in jail now like any small time thief who got caught stealing a cd from k-mart, or is he just special?

I would like to know how you can tell if a recruiter web site is real or a scam? For instance is executuive search onlin.com real or a scam? They ask you to submit personal info.

Thanks

BEWARE OF "GRANT 1 DAY.ORG.". This one is defanatly a scam. This is the site I went to and was charged 1.99 for a stimulus pkg. but within 2 – 3 weeks my pkg never came, and I was charged 98.99 for what they said was put on for their regular fee becuase my free trial period had ended. "Lets get these frauds before they dissappear"!!! To everyone reading this beware of scams like this, and I hope this gets though to put these scam artists out of business!!!!

Could you please investigate and offer information concerning the "area code 506" scam? Several members of my family and several of my friends and co-workers, and my husband and me have been receiving calls from 506 informing us that our vehicle warranty will soon expire. I stayed on the line long enough to speak to a person and they asked "what model and year vehicle". I then asked them to give me that info since they had contacted me. I am sure you have heard of this and have probably been contacted yourself. What can we do to stop this sort of scam. We are on the "no call list", but still get the calls on both home and cell.

Thanks for any info or help you might offer.

I read alot about jeffpaulclub.com, I recently signed up and sent a $57.00 money order not credit card. I received the package in the mail, I called to set it all up,they wanted a checking account and i told them i didn't have one. They told me i needed one so people can send me money, and after the first month they would take out $29.95 a month for the use of the websites which is ok with me. everything sounds good to me except why do they need my social security number. Please could you investigate this for me before i go any further.

Thank you Jennifer for the job that YOU do. We appreciate the information. Along the scam lines, today, in my email arrives a notice from PayPal advising me that my "transation" went through. I didn't authorize the transaction, yet when I clicked the link "cancel transaction", it asked for my credit card transaction. I called PayPal who advises it was indeed a scam. You can report suspicious Phising email or scams involving PayPal to spoolf@paypal.com

Why aren't these people going to jail? If somebody sent a piece of mail (snail mail) posing as the IRS but actually wasn't, they would be committing a federal crime. How come this doesn't apply to email??

I appreciate this information regarding scams on the internet. Many people believe they have been scammed by the Video Professor. But I do not think that is the case. Instead, others believe the complaints are a result of deceptive marketing tactics. I was the victim of the Video Professor advertising that promises a free lesson only to get a charge for $189.95 on my credit card a week or so after I received the lesson. I went through quite a challenge to get my money back. Check my blog for details.
