A-Rod admission leaves more questions than answers

Posted: 06:08 AM ET

Writer Keith and Sports Anchor Rafer Weigel

With 200 reporters flanking Alex Rodriguez on Tuesday afternoon at his press conference, there was one question that needed to be asked:

"Mr. Rodriguez? What do you take us for?"

ALT TEXT

Alex Rodriguez, seen here in 2001.

A-Rod–in a moment of unintended irony–said he was there to "take his medicine" by calling a press conference since his admission of taking a banned substance. His hope was by doing this he could put it behind him. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect – he left us with more questions than answers.

A-Rod did admit that he and his cousin (who was never identified) injected each other with something called "Boli" or Primobolan, which he claims he bought over-the-counter from the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez called it "amateur hour" claiming the two didn't really know what they were doing or what it was supposed to do.

His reasoning for doing it? He was "young and stupid." Rodriguez pretty much stuck to that script using that excuse five times in his presser when asked repeatedly, "Why did you do it".

"I was young and stupid." He said this despite the fact that he was 18 when he came into the league and 25 when he allegedly starting taking the performance enhancers.

A-Rod also went on about not going to college as if that had something to do with it as well. He also talked about bench pressing 300 pounds in high school to get a letterman jacket. The point: I've always been strong.

He also mentioned that he felt pressure in Texas after signing his then record $252 million contract. If he felt pressure then, how is he not feeling pressure now after signing a bigger contract in the media capital of the world? There is no bigger amount of pressure than playing for George Steinbrenner. That's when he stopped?

At first it was jarring to see such a mega star twist in the wind like that. Big star athletes are not used to that. In fact, most superstars are used to getting what they want and doing what they want without repercussions. A-Rod's admission and media mea culpa was a first to witness.

But after letting it sink in, you realized, A-Rod didn't really answer a lot of the questions posed to him. When asked if it was cheating, he said, "that's not for me to determine."

When asked about his numbers being stricken? Same response.

Did you do it to gain an advantage?

"I was young and stupid."

A fastball down the middle and he swung and missed.

Even Yankee GM Brian Cashman seconded that emotion saying "the one thing he could have said, I guess, is that he did this to make himself better on the baseball field. Maybe everybody just assumes that, but I don't think that Alex is very good at communicating to be honest. This is not something he's good at."

Ya think?

Perhaps watching A-Rod's fall from grace will have a positive effect on other kids and athletes and keep them from ever doing something like this as well.

For A-Rod, he just wants to get back to playing baseball. But this could still have a big effect on the Yankees season.

The media is not done with this story. If more and more comes out and his story breaks down, will the players who stood behind him at his presser, still back him up? According to Joe Torre's book, they didn't care for him before this story broke. Why are we to believe that what Rodriguez said yesterday was the whole truth? He gave a lot of double speak when answering tough questions.

Across the board, whether you're a fan of A-Rod's or not, the whole thing is a sad story. Many thought before this that A-Rod would be the guy to break Barry Bonds’ record for home runs and do it cleanly. Now, no one knows. See, baseball is a game of stats and nostalgia. Baseball fans compare players based on numbers. But given Rodriguez vagueness in recent interviews, the numbers to this story still don't add up.

Wait and see.

I find this subject hilarious, these people are entertainers. They are dancing monkeys, We pay the vendor money, and they perform. If there is a product that makes these entertainers produce more advanced performance, they should take it.

Bob Massung   February 18th, 2009 6:43 am ET

He cheated plain and simple, They should have had a large banner with a giant dollar sign in front of him to off-set the Yankee banner and logo behind him. What a sad day in sports. He has shamed major league baseball for everyone.I can no longer support the New York Yankees. .

Derrick   February 18th, 2009 6:56 am ET

You know I feel we "reap what we sow". These athletes are paid based on performance. Whether it is baseball, football or golf, we are enamored by the "long ball". A-rod hit's home runs and the fans go wild. A-rod makes the game more interesting, which puts more fans in the seats, and more money into baseball. Baseball pays A-rod for his performance....what else do we want?? Do I care he did steroids? Absolutely not...

javajunkie60   February 18th, 2009 6:58 am ET

Oh come on A-Roid... He knew that taking steroids was wrong before he took them... Saying that he was young and stupid just doesn't cut it...

Jim in Missoula   February 18th, 2009 7:19 am ET

Drug use was so institutionilized in Baseball for years. League officials looked the other way while their juiced up stars brought big bucks to the game. It is these greedy executives that should be called to task for drug use before the ban. THROW THEM IN THE SLAMMER!

Stephanie   February 18th, 2009 7:25 am ET

I would like to ask why are we again speaking about this? It happend back in 2003 and was delt with the way it was according to the rules of that time. MOVE ON PEOPLE it was 6 years ago

robert   February 18th, 2009 7:26 am ET

I think this is a modern day witch hunt and that MLB knew these guys where taken this drugs the only reasson that this guys are been taled about is because the untalent people are mad because they arent making that kind of money and I have 2 question 1) why is congress worry about it that ought to worry about getting this country back on track and not the steriods use in MLB and second show me where a test shows that steriods helps hit home runs i thought it was bat swing and pitch equal homerun or good on base percetage so do i care if A-Rod use it no I think that people just dont have any better thing to do so they talk about the steroids and base ball but let remember that MLB didnt outlaw steroids until recently so it was legal to use it so why the fuse over it and no one really care about and the people who do just mad because that person isnt playing for there team I will bet that if Bonds hadnt broke the home run record or if A-Rod hadnt been the youngest player to hit 500 home run we wouldnt be having this decussion.

J-Reed   February 18th, 2009 7:28 am ET

MLB has been dirty for a long time. We shouldn't be surprised when one its best players comes forth. He isn't the only player to have taken a banned substance, and I'm sure he won't be the last. MLB still hasn't instituted a real policy on banned substances nor have they inforced any punishments. MLB could start now, but they feel the game would suffer and become uninteresting to fans. Of course that means the lose of money. No owner wants that to happen. The MLB Commisioner should take some of the blame as well as all of the players that took banned substances. It was the atmosphere that this was acceptable behavior back then that has ruined the game. My message from a fans point of view is, it's never to late to change, but it will take more than just the players to do it.

Neal Currier   February 18th, 2009 7:28 am ET

So i'm a bit confused, if a-rod broke the rules of baseballs banned substance policy, and admits to it, will his stats stand. That tells me that you CAN cheat in baseball, get paid loads of money and MLB stills calls you the most talented player in the game. Confusing??

felix ramirez   February 18th, 2009 7:29 am ET

B.S!!!!! I LIKE A-ROD, BUT DON'T INSULT MY INTELIGENCE!!!!! 2 TIMES A MONTH, FOR SIX MONTHS, FOR THREE SEASONS? I AM NOT A MATH MAJOR, BUT THAT IS 36 TIMES. YOU MEAN HE NEEDED 36 INJECTIONS TO TELL IF SOMETHING WAS OR WAS NOT WORKING? I THINK AFTER 20 TIMES (I AM BEING GENEROUS) HE COULD OF FIGURED OUT THIS STUFF WAS NOT WORKING AND QUIT. COME ON A-ROD!!!!! WE STILL LOVE PETE ROSE AS A PLAYER!!! YOU ARE STILL YOUNG!!!!! WE ARE GIVING YOU A CHANCE!!!!

EB Smith   February 18th, 2009 7:36 am ET

the athletes pegged for using performance enhancers bothers me on so many different levels. If anyone actually believes there is a professional athlete in the past 20 years that has not taken some sort of performance enhancers they are living in la la land! It also bothers me that there are athletes rejected from certain awards or recognition because of positive test results of performance enhancers. If ALL the athletes in the "Hall of Fame" were not tested for performance enhancers than it should not be a factor of who gets in or not. These athletes are all adults, if they choose to do something to harm thier bodies that is up to them. Steroids are perfectly legal with a script from a doc. I doubt the people pointing fingers are doctors and if they are doctors they probably don't have a professional view of the athlete's medical file................there is too many variables for these people to make a judgment on these gifted athletes. Thier judgments and accusations are hurting the lives of people that just so happened to get caught doing something all their co workers are doing.

Alisha   February 18th, 2009 7:54 am ET

We all need to get over it. He took them years ago and he said he was sorry. Big deal. Its not like its a big shocker anyway that someone in the big leagues is taking steroids.

Who Cares About This Anymore?   February 18th, 2009 7:55 am ET

I am so sick of this steroid story from anybody. We may as well face the fact most athletes used steroids in the past before the media jumped on the steroid bandwagon. Now the only people that care about this anymore is the media. Get over it, move on.

Jason Stine   February 18th, 2009 7:56 am ET

doug32674   February 18th, 2009 7:58 am ET

I agree that he left more questions to be answered but did we really expect him to be forthcoming? Look at all of the other clowns who have "juiced". Guys like McGwire, Clemens and Bonds who still haven't owned up at all. I'm not a Yankees fan and can't say that I care for A-rod but at least he's not trying to lie his way out of it still. He may not have given answers but at least he isn't ducking media, blaming trainers and lying to congress.

Jason Stine   February 18th, 2009 8:17 am ET

To quote the Gladiator movie "Were we not all entertained" Thats the point isn't it? I say let them use as much steroids as they want. Let's see how far they can go!

DAN   February 18th, 2009 8:25 am ET

a-rod is a typical crybaby – my cousin injected me. who told his cousin to do it ?? why ?? – obviously since this stuff came from the dominican republic it was not purchased here.

when will these crybabies finally grow up and take responsiblity for themselves.

also – why doesn't professional baseball step in and void his contract which they certainly can

Anthony Hubbard   February 18th, 2009 8:27 am ET

This is ridiculous. Why does our country make such a big deal about steroids. there are hundreds of things that are worse. It's just a bunch of uninformed people making uninformed decisions on what is right and wrong even though they don't even know what is going on. I don't even understand why anabolics are illegal when things such as tobacco and alcohol are. The media makes a much bigger deal about steroids than it should be. Most of the things that they say are caused from steroids aren't even true. I personally think A-rod is fine for using, and why not just make 'em legal.

Dave   February 18th, 2009 8:28 am ET

A-Rod is one of the most talented "natural" athletes in history. He would've broke records without the stuff. Too bad, he will always have this on his record...How is this type of poor ethical decision making different than Pete Rose's? I have to go back to my middle class job now...someone has to foot the bill for this country.

Anthony Hubbard   February 18th, 2009 8:29 am ET

oh, by the way EB Smith, just because it's a performance ENHANCER, doesn't mean that it is illegal, or bad.

laman   February 18th, 2009 8:29 am ET

Would everyone just leave it alone. I the think the question should be would you take hgh or steroids if it gurantee you $10 million a year for 4 to 5 years? I would. Let's move on, please.

Tracy   February 18th, 2009 8:30 am ET

With the economy in the toilet...people losing their homes and incomes so they can't provide for their families, I could care less if some overpaid ball thrower got caught taking drugs. If he's guilty, prosecute him; If he's not then LET IT GO

I don't understand why this is news. This country was founded on "advantage" and put any adjective you want in front of that but history does not lie. Goverment, corporations and lindividuals the like have maintained longevity by "using enhancements". This is laughable news because lets face it, will he be required to give all his endorsement money and paychecks back or is this just something else for the American people to wave their finger at then go back to stressing over bills and relationships? Puuuulease. Spare me.

amador cabrera el monte,ca   February 18th, 2009 8:33 am ET

he keeps repeating he was young and stupid and dont remember alot of facts and says it was along time ago only 25yrs old and what hes about 27 or 28yrs old now, come on does he think that we are going to soak up his lies,i dont think so and as a baseball fan he let us and kids down, sorry about his luck but the truth always comes out.

In a recent vacation to the Dominican Republic I was surprised to see so many drugs being sold over the counter that usually requires a prescription in the U.S.A. That's the only part I believe about A-Rod's story.

A Rod is to baseball as priest is to Catholic Church?   February 18th, 2009 8:40 am ET

Does making a lot of money make people Bi-Polar?

Lets see:

Per Arod "I never took Enhancement Drugs".
Per Arod "I took Enchancement drugs but only between 2001-2003".
Per Arod "I took drugs but do not know what it was. My cousin got it out of the country. I only took it twice a month for 3 years. However, I do not really know what it was".

Does he really ecpect us to believe this?

People wonder why this is a big deal. It is because of the coverup that baseball was doing. Sweeping this under the carpet. Like the Catholic Church and the abuses committed by the priests.

A rod is like a priest of baseball....he committed these acts against all of us baseball lovers. Not just him but a lot of them....this is not an Arod thing...this is a baseball thing! It is bigger than A Rod. So, I am not necessarily picking on him.

So what do we do? Nothing about the past unless they lied to Congress and Grand Jury. Baseball is tarnished...period. I am mad for watching it over the past 15 years.....when was the last CLEAN season????

As per Hall of fame? Build a new wing....make it a double-wide trailer....they should not be allowed to hang in the same halls as The Babe or Hammerin Hank.

Jeff Gearding   February 18th, 2009 8:41 am ET

A-Rod and others are guilty of taking steroids which is ulimately used to enhance the outcome of their game. Which is fraud. Baseball does nothing to these players just like football. If this happened under the olympics their career would be over.
So, I say bring back Pete Rose then. Least he bet on his team to win.

Mark Gassino   February 18th, 2009 8:42 am ET

Aroid claims he and his cousin purchased "over-the-counter-Boli". That purchase is the same stuff you can purchase in Mexico at any pharmacy "over-the-counter". Steroids like "Boli" are illegal in the USA. Don't let the "over-the-counter" phrase make it sound as if it is a harmless, legal, purchase.

CJ   February 18th, 2009 8:42 am ET

Speaking from extensive knowledge of Androgenic and Anabolic steroids from a personal and chemists point of view, I can concur from A-rod's statement – it was amateurish. The drug they experimented with is one of the weakest Anabolic steroids as far as potency is concerned and yet is also the safest in terms of side effects which are practically nil. To inject himself only twice a month will result in absolutely NO noticeable gains/benefits to the user. This drug, Methenolone Enanthate (Primobolan Depot) must be taken minimum 3 times A WEEK to begin to start showing any noticeable gains, and even then your gains will not begin to appear until around 3 – 5 weeks of consistent use.
This drug must be taken for about 10-12 weeks to produce any solid gains.
its unfortunate when anyone would choose to go on steroids with the proimise of unprecedented gains or benefits without first doing a large scale inventory of what they are taking and why. It always amazes me that people will simply take someone's hype that the injection of steroids auotmatically will make you a champion. What foolishness to inject something into your body you have no knowledge of, its benefits, side effects, how to administer, legitimacy, etc...

Steroids do not a champion make.

I’m a self employed business owner and it’s down about 65 to 70%. I’m so thrilled that all the Wall Street Crooks & Auto Companies got there money so they can make there house payments!!

But what about people like us, I have not seen anything yet!

What is the stimulus package going to do for me???

lydia camacho,covina,ca   February 18th, 2009 8:47 am ET

he actually believes and thinks that we the fans are going to believe him,he dont have to say anything his face exprections tells us clearly that his lieing through his teeth, for his teamates and maneger supporting him,i will no longer support the n.y yankees,go boston or go angels and down with the cheating steariod using yanks.

Loren Osborn   February 18th, 2009 8:52 am ET

If A-Rod violated provisions of his contract, he should have to pay back the money he got illegally.

DANO   February 18th, 2009 8:54 am ET

If they want to jepardize their health and the millions they earn then they are stupid!

Tom from Philly   February 18th, 2009 8:55 am ET

I think the problem here is we deify young athletes who my be physical giants, but are really undeveloped children in man-bodies. The one thing no one caught was A-rod saying that part of him wished he had gone to college, instead of signing a huge contract at 18. Same with mikey P., spent his whole life swimming, and never got to be a kid or even a normal college student, whose bong hits would not be newsworthy. I though we got over making scandal and excluding people form things in 1992 when both clinton and gore admitted to drug use. We had the whole boquett on both sides this time pill popping coke snorting pot smoking candidates. And by the way the pot smoking presidents seem more responsible to me than the ones who tried to exclude others for having smoked, think about it

amador cabrera,el monte,ca   February 18th, 2009 8:57 am ET

he keeps repeating that he dont remember alot of facts because it was along time ago and he was only 25yrs old,my miece thats 15yrs old knows what steroids do and are so save your lies for your manager and teamates, you are a big! disappointment to your fans and go! boston or go!angels.

C volz   February 18th, 2009 9:07 am ET

For Bob (above) to say he no longer will support the Yankees, well that's plane "stupid" as A-Rod used while a Ranger. And oh, by the way, I believe almost 10% of the players tested at that time were found positive. So where is the outrage to identify these other players? Just the most visible is exposed? Give another black eye to the Yankees? Why?
I'm furious that all the other players weren't exposed...there are alot of players sweating it out right now...bring 'em out! Let there be equal outrage to all of them.

Lynn   February 18th, 2009 9:13 am ET

I do not agree with anyone taking steroids but it seems that people are forgetting that A-Rod had taken them when there was nothing illeagle about it so he don't have to make any comments as far as I'm concerned. People need to just get over it unless there is something showing he had taken them since the league banned them

amador cabrera,el monte,ca   February 18th, 2009 9:16 am ET

he keeps repeating that he dont remember alot of facts because it was along time ago and he was only 25yrs old,my niece thats 15yrs old knows what steroids do and are ,so save your lies for your manager and teamates and for that down with the yankees and go!boston or go! angels.

Chip   February 18th, 2009 9:20 am ET

It cracks me up that with all the problems in this country right now we are so worried about baseball being dirty. As many players that have been caught up in this why is A-rod getting called out so much. If people really have a problem they should protest baseball all togather.

Rob   February 18th, 2009 9:21 am ET

Wonder how much he paid his attorneys to write that statement for him.

Roger Baggett   February 18th, 2009 9:21 am ET

When it comes to baseball today, myself and many other "old-time" baseball fans suffer from broken hearts. America's past time will not be looked at or feel the same again. "Young and Stupid????" Perhaps this same analogy can be used for the state of our economy! Let's all just admit it....we'll be forgiven....then all our countries economic problems will just go away........

Arnie Hauger   February 18th, 2009 9:24 am ET

I feel every homerun A-Rod made needs to be retracted while he was on steroids. This will make the playing field fair and square.

Vonda   February 18th, 2009 9:25 am ET

ARod is thinking I admitted it, I said I was. Stupid kid that should be enough, leave it alone already.

Michael Cummins   February 18th, 2009 9:25 am ET

Its hard to believe ANYTHING that is coming out of his mouth right now.During the Katie Coric interview he assumed he had gotten away with it because he had never heard anymore about the testing, so he CATERGORICALLY DENIED he had ever taken performance enhancing drugs. Now he says well i did but i was young stupid and nieve.Well he is still nieve if he thinks we are going to buy his BS a second time!

Amanda - Leesburg, Florida   February 18th, 2009 9:29 am ET

It's very upsetting, especially as a huge Yankee fan and an equally big A-rod fan. However, I can accept his apology. People make mistakes, and baseball players are human, just like the rest of us. Regardless if he took steroids or not, he's very very talented, and I'd still consider him the best player in the league.
I'm still behind my bronx boy!

I passed the Census test but am not guaranteed this job. There is no jobs here and I am as of the end of this month 3 house payments behind. All my tax return had to pay two months of bills that were at 20 percent. I can't find another job and I am so scared for my kids. Food stamps is only for food and that won't pay the bills. How many suicides do you people think this DEPRESSION will cause ?

What an embarassment for our American culture. And, what on Earth was wrong with those reporters yesterday? No one really rode him with a decent confrontational question. Saying "I was young and stupid" is insulting. I know preschoolers who know that we are not supposed to break the law!

Bill   February 18th, 2009 9:57 am ET

I wish every MLB player would take steroids. I don’t care what they do as long as they don’t die on the field. I go to watch a game, I don’t care what they do before or after the game. Legalize steroids and let them all use them so people can stop whining and crying.

Julie   February 18th, 2009 9:58 am ET

Remeber the old song... "Im Sorry...so sorry...."? Are we going to replace "Take me out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch?

Donna Evans   February 18th, 2009 10:08 am ET

The atheletes that swim in money, to the point that money becomes nothing to them, are surrounded by people that treat them like GODS. The best ones, anyway. They live in a fantasy world where rules and morality are just words on paper, not something that THEY have to live by. When they are caught, even after warnings and lectures to avoid "controversy" for the team-whether it be ridiculous behaviour (going out with Madona while you're still married, telling the press other team players are going out with you're "sloppy seconds"), or steriod use, they claim it wasn't their fault (!).

Their fantasy worlds should come to an end after they are caught doing anything. No second chances-boom, you are banned for a year, or more, no salary, no staff, NOTHING. When they live in the real world for a year, or more, they might appreciate their "other world" a little more. Maybe not. But it's worth a try.

Eileen Stephenson   February 18th, 2009 10:18 am ET

RE: A-Rod – Let's simply stop this media hype of yet-another sports-figure-gone-steriod-wild. It's all the same old story. Sports heros getting paid a huge salaries (while fans are paying big money to purchase stadium tickets and even funding their stadiums) is caught with their pants down for taking drugs. The more the media continues to report on this, the more these types of people become more famous. I'm sick of hearing about these overpaid narcissists. Let's focus on people who are actually contributing 'authentically' to the lives of others, not taking our money and respect, then pissing in our faces.

Do you think he is going to ask for a bailout, to pay for rehab.?

Jo   February 18th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Thank you Mark,

When is someone going to help me? I am a disabled military widow. And I just saw where I could get a whopping $250.00 Is that what the cost of a life is worth now? I think that my late career military husband would be ashamed of the US right now!

Sharon   February 18th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Oh come on A-rod!! Do you think we are all that stupid? You are smart enough to sign mega-million dollar contracts but you inject a substance that you're not sure what it is or what it does or if you're using it right?? For three years??? Young and stupid.....can we all use that excuse when we get caught lying and cheating?? I don't think so. Do madantory drug testing on all athletes in every sport, first time violation – one year suspension, second time – lifetime banishment. I want to see real talent – not drug enhanced freaks. Lets clean up all sports. These enterprises generate enough income to pay these ridiculous salaries – they can pay for the testing.

Floyd Brooks   February 18th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Do you really think the baseball public would be raking A-Rod over the coals if the Yankees had been winning big since he came over from the Rangers? Not on your life. Winning always erases so many ills.

Donna   February 18th, 2009 11:06 am ET

He isnt the only one who has done steriods .and surely won't be the last one.they are in all sports wheather we want to believe it or not. Alex Rodriguez is just got caught.Just like Barry Bonds he will never be looked upon the same again. His record will forever be tainted.

Eileen   February 18th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

**************AMERICANS LET'S ALL BOYCOTT!!!!

STOP ATTENDING THESE PROFESSIONAL SPORTS EVENTS AND LET'S SEE HOW WE CAN ALL DRIVE DOWN THE HUGE SALARIES THESE SO-CALLED 'ATHLETES' ARE GETTING. How many times have we witnessed these high-priced athletes contributing to American standards? Well, there are a few, but not as many as those who are druggies!

IF WE CAN STOP CONSUMING GAS AND DRIVE THOSE PRICES DOWN, THINK OF WHAT WE CAN DO WITH THESE ATHLETES' SALARIES!

It's time to STOP the salaries of these overpaid zealots as well. I sure wish Rush Limbaugh would start thinking about putting his energies into bashing these athletes and their salaries! Now that would be a real subject for RUSH to get going on – and he should be able to give good advice about getting addicted to drugs too!

LET'S ALL BOYCOTT PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL GAMES IN ALL THE DRUGGIES HONORS! WHAT A WAY TO HONOR THEM, RIGHT?

What if they come out with a safe performance enhancing treatment or drug someday? Wouldn't everyone want to take it, or would it be cheating? What about other drugs and treatments that enhance performance but don't have the stigma attatched to them that taking steriods does? Is that cheating too? It would be great if being honest and pure of heart helped you hit homers and get millions of dollars but that's just not how it works. I'm not saying that what he did was right, I just can't say I blame him for doing it.

Brad   February 19th, 2009 6:19 am ET

I was young and stupid once and now fall into the old and stupid group ( by politicians). But I have never had to resort to illegal drugs to live my life. Not even under peer pressure.

Skip   February 19th, 2009 6:59 am ET

Baseball is part of the entertainment industry, IT IS NOT REAL LIFE !!
Why is Congress wasting our time and money investigating entertainers drug use?

Ken   February 19th, 2009 7:46 am ET

How can we argue that we’re not a “Nation of Cowards”, when we allow a coward to depict our newly elected President as a dead gorilla? Then allow him to hide behind the 1st Amendment or satire.

H.J.   February 19th, 2009 7:55 am ET

I have to ask this... Who cares? Why does anyone, especially congress, care if these athletes want to pump their bodies full of steroids. Why are steroids illegal? These are paid entertainers. I find it hard to see a difference between a movie star receiving plastic surgery to make themselves more marketable and an athlete taking steroids for the same reason.

Brett   February 19th, 2009 8:25 am ET

WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have world turmoil, a world economic depresion, and a war going on. WHO CARES about something that happened in 2003. We have more imortant things to worry about than A-Rod possibly taking steroids. I have to worry about getting by month to month on bills...I really don't care what A-Rod does.

Rose   February 19th, 2009 9:26 am ET

You keep comming down on A-rod. Who are the other 103??? Of course you don't care about that and neither does Mitchell because he is on the board for the Red Sox, and you can't tell me that Veritec, Ortiz and Manny where not taking the stuff. Take a look at Veritec's stats last year and look and the size of him comparing to the years before. And how did Oritiz do last year???

I THINK THOSE QUESTIONS NEED ANSWERING TOO.

LEAVE A-ROD ALONE ALREADY IT WAS BEFORE, SO MUCH FOR CONFIDENCIALLATY.

Toni Pugh   February 19th, 2009 9:44 am ET

Why do I care? Is that the only news out there? Does it effect me? Does it change my life? This is his problem. Lets move on.

daniel brain   February 19th, 2009 10:28 am ET

can we please just stick a knife in the a-rod saga i'm so sick of it

dieselis   February 19th, 2009 10:55 am ET

truth quite simply is steroids were extremly good for baseball.when sales needed a jolt, steriods came to the rescue.we'll test you because were not going to hold you accountable.now the games secure box office couldn't be better.the 103 guys that didn't catherize urine and pass here comes the sheriff.i would gander that the number of playeers is well above 50%so get over it our penalize everybody.treat them like regular criminals.starting with the commissioner of baseball who conspired in the first place.he knew did nothing now he wants to punish.then let the owners be charged and fined for conspiracy.maybe some of the fans should be charged, hey they had to know something was up with the alarming football like scores.no then, lets go to football those undefeated dolphins.start with mercury morris and line up all the cocaine users and speed freaks stick an asterisk on that season.last of all congress.if we had a test for common sense.let them take it once a month along with the court and the executive branches.they use some antipartisan medication.

Joe in Kalispell   February 19th, 2009 11:58 am ET

A-Rod admitted he used steroids. The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) regulates five classes of drugs: narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids. Forget discipline by the baseball commissioner, why isn't he up on federal charges?

He has set a terrible example for our youth and as such should be considered an undesirable alien and deported if he hasn't been naturalized.

Janice   February 19th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Mine is more of a question.

All of the jobs being cut are they going to be the ones in the usa or are they cutting jobs that are over seas?

and I hope the answer is over seas

BOB DE LA CRUZ   February 19th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

If ,as he says, these substances were not illegal back then, what is the problem? Now, if he's taken them since it became illegal, then I believe he should be banned from baseball.

Mike Jones   February 19th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Who really cares if fool wants to be know as a cheater

Why don't you concern yourselves with more information topics like job loss. All the big companies are outsourcing American jobs and replacing them with INDIA labor

Michaels Stores actually cut 295 jobs at Irving headquarters. The story being told the company is co-sourcing with Tata but in reality they are outcourcing.
Something that the public is not aware and should be concerned! Your CREDIT information, yes this information is now in the hand of INDIA. Think about it all your personal information is overseas. Good Luck shopping there, use cash or just don't shop there anymore!

Send a message about oursourcing American jobs so that the owners can make a bigger profit.

beagle1   February 20th, 2009 6:45 am ET

Since sports began there have been drug and alcohol issues. The John Madden famous Raiders were known to take pain killers while playing. No one made a big deal out of that.! Bill Clinton even smoked pot but did not inhale! Uhmmm. Did we investigate that? Who cares – play ball!!!

Richard Brooks   February 20th, 2009 8:08 am ET

I think this is a bunch of Hype . He was young and made a bad choice plus at the time he used steroids there was (no) laws in affect at the time Alex Rodrigues was using steroids. I think this Issue should be put behind and everyone move on . Look at his stats , he's not using anymore and hasn't in a long time and his numbers are still outstanding . He might have mad a mistake when he was younger like everyone else has sometime in their life . He has proved to be a outstanding athlete . Lets let it rest and get on with the nations best past time in sports. Thanks , Rich .

MMCCLURE,WI   February 20th, 2009 9:05 am ET

RAFER WE TALKED ABOUT THIS IN THE CHAT ROOM. WHAT I DON,T UNDERSTAND IS THAT A-ROD DID THIS WHEN IT WAS NOT BANNED AND EVERYONE WANTS HIS HEAD, BUT PHELPS KNEW IT WAS WRONG AND EVERYONE STILL LOVES HIM.....NOT FAIR PEOPLE......WE ALL HAVE TO LEARN TO BE MORE FORGIVING.......

I have absolutely no inerest in sports. However I have lived in the Dominican Republic for over ten years on and off, and the truth is anything can be had in most drug stores there without a prescription

cindy   February 20th, 2009 10:31 am ET

I am so sick of hearing about sports stars and their drug issues. i do not approve of my hard-earned money being spent to prosecute these people. Let the sports industry deal with them and use my money for something else. Putting them in jail means I have to pay for them to eat and have a place to live.

Teresa   February 20th, 2009 9:09 pm ET

Jim in Missoula is absolutely correct. Exactly what I was thinking. Major League Baseball knew this was going on, baseball team executives knew this was going on, but they turned their heads the other way and let these ball players take ANYTHING they wanted. Baseball was coming off of a very unpopular strike and they were trying to get the fans back. Now, they want to put asterisks by players that have broken records? If Kirk Radomski (Bases Loaded) is correct, over 80% of the players in baseball were taking some type of drug to enhance their performance. The only thing they should do is fine the athletes that took these drugs and fine the executives that allowed this to happen.

Listening this morning to the program you had a piece about the US Army and the stop-loss program. This is very old news, the army has been saiding the same thing for about 3 years. As was said in a movie a few years back the old Potomac 2 step. Tell the soldiers what they want to hear and string them along.

keep up the good work really enjoy your show.

beth   February 23rd, 2009 9:35 am ET

i know yall are not talking about this right now. B
ut if I can take a 7% pay cut why can't the house, senate, and white house get a pay cut also. If they have I must of missed it. Also, I made mistakes and i had to pay for them. Now I am going to have to pay for others mistakes and what will I get out of the all these pay outs nothing. Something seems unfair about this, I built a new home and I will not be able to get a mortage rate change with out having to pay closing cost again. Something seems wrong about that. I guess there are no rewards for doing things the right way.

sonny   February 23rd, 2009 9:46 am ET

I cant believe they are trying an 11 year old as and adult. but killing a pregnant woman is double murder. I fell for his Father as he has lost two children and girlfriend

James Carrow   February 23rd, 2009 11:19 am ET

As Alex is still a couple of hundred home runs away from the record, I think stealing that test record and leaking it to the press was jumping the gun a bit, on the part of Texas Ranger ownership. We have a guy up here in the northwest who owns a real all-time record, for most hits in a season, and his team owners have not leaked any positive steroid tests, either. I wonder why not? The point is that 'roids are supposed to improve bat speed and power; apparently, they do not improve fielding ability, throwing accuracy, eyesight, or the ability to read pitchers. You know, if only Mark McGuire, Barry Bonds, and Jose Canseco had won 40 Golden Gloves between them, this would be a better story, here. Apparently, they did not, although Barry used to be a decent fielder, and Jose once had a great arm. None of these guys could throw a curve like Babe Ruth, either.

Mikey   February 23rd, 2009 6:19 pm ET

A-rod was a great player well is, and he just made a stupid choice to do drugs. Also he should be able to play because he admites it and will not do it agian. Most players are mad and there hearts are brooken.

stace   February 24th, 2009 6:34 am ET

OH! Maybe that wasn't a needle my cousin was sticking in me, I realy can't remember anything before I was hit in the head with that fast ball!!! Don't all athletes take enhancers to help give their fans a good show... Personally with the money they get now maybe they should?!!

Karen Hughes   February 25th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Hi Robin, All 3 of my sisters kids play baseball, what kind of a so called "rollmodel" are these sports figures? Also the way the economy is there should be a salery cap on all sports figures and all of these large companys who want bailed out, and if they dont spend OUR money that we worked for correctly. Then they should have to GIVE IT BACK! NO MORE PARTIES, NO MORE FANCY TRIPS.
If we the little guy have to cut back they also should have to. Barrack needs to start giving out warnings, if your gonna play with tax payers money, then your giving it back you dont need bailed out. WE DO!! BAIL ME OUT!

wayne   February 26th, 2009 8:47 am ET

He knew exactly what he was doing – naive on his part to think everyone else is naive to this whole issue,

Merle Jones   February 26th, 2009 10:32 am ET

The bailout of these banks , mortgage companies, and the auto industry would be better served. If the people of this nation could receive more of the 700 billion dollars. I don't know exactly how many people are in this country, but if 1.5 million per person was given each with spending conditions for homes, health, education, and financial planning over the next five years. I think that we could do a better job as a stimulus for this country when these corp giants. American really needs to spare its wealth and raises it people like the Arabians so that there is no need for outside countries products, but just their services that way we become in dependant of them. Again we're still playing the reward game, by give the same powers money to hold us down. We are a great people in this great nation, but 10% of the top holds down the 90% on the bottom, will America ever wake up or will we continue to fall like the Romans.

randy   February 26th, 2009 11:10 am ET

"A-FRAUD"(as teammates called him, allegedly) CHEATED!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE. BUT I DONT THINK IT WAS ALL HIS FAULT, YOU GOTTA BLAME THE MLB AS WELL FOR NOT HAVING SOME KIND OF TEST OR FOR NOT HAVING ALL "P.E.D'S" BANNED. IF I HAD THE OPPOURTUNITY TO MAKE $250 MILLION AT THE AGE OF 25 ID BE PRETTY TEMPTED TO PROVE I WAS WORTH IT, BUT IT DOESNT MEAN ID DO IT...ALSO, WE DIDNT HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN WE WERE WATCHING ALL THE HOME RUNS FLY OUTTA THE PARK EITHER.. BUT WE ALL KNOW ONE THING NOW, EVEN THE "BEST PLAYER" IN THE GAME DID IT SO IM SURE THERES PLENTY MORE NAMES OUT THERE..

HANK AARON IS STILL THE ALL-TIME HOME RUN KING!!!

Richard L. Lewis II   February 27th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Rafer....... A-Rod needs to removed from baseball, why you may ask, first I feel he lied. then I ask what does this say to our children and grandchildren go a head and do drugs, enhance yourself with drugs that may kill you then say what I'm sorry... What does he do next, have the cousin that did the drugs with him pick him up from a game when the he was told not to bring him around the game..... you know if that were you or me aor anyone else we would be sitting in jail, why do they get away with this and then spit in the face of the people that want to be just like them the kids.... I'm pissed off really, and feel that he should be taken out of the game... I know that there are others that don't shoot up that would be just as good and maybe even better...What is the teem thinkg...i'm sorry but when I played peewee baseball you had to go by the rules or you were taken out....God forbid that our children follow this rule that a-rod has set for himself.

John Painer   March 2nd, 2009 10:09 am ET

So what if A-rod used steroids. The Yankees still have not made it to the World Series. And it's none of the Congress' business if MLB athletes take steroids.

dieselis   March 2nd, 2009 11:35 am ET

let he who is without sin cast the first stone.entertainers have always had problems of substance abuse.they are not role models the establishment(the people who make the real dollars, whose incomes never get posted)have proped these atheletes up as role models because it boast a better bottom line.they are just people good bad often ugly because of constant pressure to perform.if we could undress the sports world gambling, fixed scores, march madness coached to the last shot wins.its business people should stop making it personal.i grew up in the seventies and the things players got away with makes the boys of summer look like saints.vince lombardi said something like"winning isn't everything it's the only thing"ain't nothing changed.so long as you don't make the establishment look bad.the establishment is seldom punished because they rock the bottom line.they get bailed out.we all answer to a higher authority in the end.

Merle Jones   March 3rd, 2009 7:45 am ET

Well he without sin can also sin,I think that we as a people are so glad to pay to see these great players and pay these fees to attend the sports games so the salaries of these players are beyond measure. Yet we don't get it, we have created the problem by our own need for entertainment, where are the sports teams that children really know where the poor child and his parents can go to a game. There is no real fans just paid reviewers, who'll pay any price for fame or a front-row seat. Asking for the best and the greatest players ever, you have to be superman to be accepted in this world today. This is not only on the sports fields, but also in every walk of life and this is our sin, so why are we passing judgement on what we have created. You get what you ask for, so I'm afraid that one day Rome will fall. May God Bless

cindy   March 3rd, 2009 11:47 pm ET

i agree that it is none of congress' business who takes drugs. i think they could put our money to better use and if they want to talk to or see a famous baseball player they should buy a ticket –at least they can afford to do so.

rich   March 6th, 2009 9:16 am ET

hey Alex don't use the excuse that u were young and stupid!!! Any athlete of any age knows injections with needles into the body should be left to a doctor or medical people. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!
