New music Tuesday: The boss keeps 'Dream'-ing

Posted: 10:00 AM ET

Senior Writer Jeff

For this week’s New Music Tuesday segment, we gave you a taste of Bruce Springsteen’s new album, “Working on a Dream”. His “Born to Run” and “Born in the USA” are considered to be 2 of the greatest albums in rock history. So, here’s a list of my favorite Springsteen albums that don’t start with “Born”. What are your favorites?

ALT TEXT

You know you love him.

5) The Rising (2002)
Springsteen copes with the tragedy of 9/11 and seeing his hometown in shambles. But, somehow, “The Rising” finds a way to be uplifting.

4) The River (1980)
The ideas were overflowing. The 2-record set is a masterpiece of joy and pain. How are the title track and “Hungry Heart” on the same album? Amazing.

3) Nebraska (1982)
Springsteen’s always been a folk singer in disguise. The title track, “Atlantic City”, “Johnny 99” and “Highway Patrolman” are dark, empty, and unforgettable. He decided to make his next album more listener-friendly, and we all know how that went.

2) Greetings From Asbury Park (1973)
His debut album. I still pull out the vinyl every so often to get that 1973 vibe. It has this feeling like.. whoever this Springsteen kid is, he’s going somewhere special, and I want to go, too. I never get tired of “Growin’ Up”, “Hard to Be a Saint in the City” and “Spirit in the Night”.

1) Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978 )
It came right after “Born to Run”, so you know expectations were high. It’s hard to believe looking back 30 years that there really weren’t any hits. “Badlands” and “The Promised Land” are on the short list of my favorite Springsteen songs.

Which Springsteen albums do you love? Any favorite lyrics? Tell us in the comments field below.

I still listen to my vinyl copy of 'Nebraska'. The Starkweather inspired title track and "Mr State Trooper" are wonderfully creepy played at volume on the old format. Some emotions aren't supposed to be cleaned up.

Was looking for the new music Tuesday selection from yesterday, 1/27...it was definitely not Bruce Springsteen...it was an 80's style band, reminiscent of the Cure...Robin even made a comment about it sounding mid-80's...anyone know the name? Thanks!

"You can't start a fire without a spark."

I grew up to that ish back in the day.

Hi Wink–
In addition to Springsteen, we featured "Franz Ferdinand" on Tuesday.
In case you don't know them, they're a fun, high-energy band with an 80s punk sensibility. They're biggest hit so far was back in 2004, "Take Me Out." It's really catchy.
I don't always hear what Robin has to say about the music–sometimes I'm just too busy–but that must be who she was talking about.
Thanks for watching the show!

Those five are great, but I have to also give a nod to "The Wild. The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle."

Side one
"The E Street Shuffle" – 4:31
"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" – 5:36
"Kitty's Back" – 7:09
"Wild Billy's Circus Story" – 4:47

Side two
"Incident on 57th Street" – 7:45
"Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" – 7:04
"New York City Serenade" – 9:55

Wow!!! What a line up!! I can't wait until Sunday for Bruce at halftime. I'll be on the field cheering him on!

Love Robin and Company, I travel a lot, best morning show on TV. Regarding Bruce I pray (Bruce) he selects songs people want to hear and sing too. Instead of the big-head attitude it's my music and I'll play what I want. Like he did at the 105th Harley Davidson Birthday party this summer in Milwaukee, over 200K people came to see him and ended-up disapointed. We watch in shock Bruce beat his strings to songs no-one knows... that was the worst Live Bruce I've ever seen. Bruce you own me one!

Bruce needs to retire. He just doesnt have it anymore!!! I am a fan of his early music but sometimes you just have to move on !!!!!

i think even as bruce ages he is still putting out good music. personally i do believe that his older records are classics that changed rock and roll history but this new stuff isn't bad. it certainly isn't as good but its not bad either

i think bruce's old music is the best but this new stuff isn't bad. i mean it will never live up to "'born to run" or "dancing in the dark" and other great songs by him, but it certainly inst horrible. infact i like it. :)
