Who doesn’t want to save money for the holidays?

Trying to decide which flat-screen TV to buy can be tough.

Despite the mess in the economy, millions of Americans are still spending, and the purchase that tops most of the lists is a flat-screen TV. If you’re going to fork over that much money, you want to get the most value for your dollar.

Consumer Reports just did a big ranking of plasmas and LCD screens. If you’re looking for one about 42 inches, their favorites were the Panasonic Plasma TH42 PX80U (retailing for between $700 to $1,000) and the LG 42PG20 (from $777 to $1200). Those are pretty wide price ranges so make sure you do some comparison-shopping to get the best deal!

You can also check www.ConsumerReports.org for more details, but you have to be a subscriber to get the full article.

Flat Screen TV's are a great value through U-Bid online at ubid.com and they are bid on by members. Great deals starting at $1.00.

Morning Jennifer....it would seem that folks don't neccessarily wish to talk about purchasing flat screen TV's ( ie. no commentary)....can you blame them?...with credit card interest rates doubling, many feel it foolish to purchase such a high ticket item and make do with their perfectly clear picture present system, as we will...yet I do here that some are going with the impulse buy, I wish them payment success. Our household has gone bare grass roots this season, as have many households...on a sidebar...would someone in media, maybe even you say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" on the air.... I hate to use the word "atheistic"...but look at the facts...when is the last time you heard the phrase, except in old black and white movies...let's show some TRUE holiday spirit....say the words...and by the way Merry Christmas to you and yours, Jennifer...

The Panasonic px80u series is a great value. As a Best Buy employee I am seeing more and more people looking for 120 hz lcds, which means they will be paying more for a set when you can get a Panasonic Plasma at a great price that refreshes at 480hz.. Also I think a larger problem with consumers is that rely too much on hearsay and input that they get from their friends who most of the time dont really know too much!

unemployment will be up in december, because there are many of us in the auto industry are laid off. and a friend of mine will also be laid off because she makes sheer knifes for the auto industry, so for anyone thinks if the auto industry goes down, nothing will happen, you are very wrong, you think the housing industry is bad now, don't give the auto industry a loan, just wait. who is going to pay taxes for the people on welfare, disability, food stamps, etc. we pay taxes too.

merry christmas and god bless
we as a nation will need it

I bought one for us at Walmart. Its a 32 in Vizio LCD it got good ratings and it was an affordable price at just over $500 bucks. It has just as many bells and whistles as a more well known brand such as LG or Panasonic and I thought it looked as good or better than them in the store.

Now that HDTV's are becoming more affordable we have just two problems.
1) decent programming – I watch a handful of channels including yours faithfully – the rest are not worth viewing consistently
2) excessive commercials – to the point the programming now repeats the last segment highlights (very annoying) on the theory you forgot what happened before the last commercial.
Solve these problems and I may be interested

I am replacing my 22 year old Sony 27 inch TV sometime soon. Without more info, I expect the LCD will last a long time as well. The information that would be most helpful would be 1. What model will be less obsolete in years to come? 2. It may be well worth the extra price for a larger and faster, sharper picture. The Sony Bravia 240mhz XBR7 models may be worth the extra money if we expect to have it a long time. Is there a TV Tech guy out there that knows if they high-end models will be coming down in price soon? Are they worth the price difference, given a long viewing period??
Thanks!
dave

I had bought Panasonic Plasma recently which costed $800. Compared other LCD's before having plasma, but finally I end up with panasonic. It has the high clearity. Really it made my decision righ
