Time to eat crow on Favre

Posted: 06:43 AM ET

ALT TEXT

He's back.

Apparently Brett Favre heard you.

Last week we asked you, the viewer, should Brett Favre have come back to football?

After two consecutive losses guided by Favre's pedestrian performances, the question was presented in a "Morning Express" text poll:

70% of you said "no," Brett should have kept his cleats in his closet. The poll garnered one of our largest audience responses.

Then, Sunday the 38 year-old went out and threw for a career-high and Jets' record SIX touchdowns in the Jets 56–35 win over Arizona.

Let me qualify this. Brett Favre is playing in his 17th season. Sunday was his 257th consecutive regular-season start. And, it was the first time he threw for six touchdowns in a game. Did I mention he was 38 years old?

Looks like we were wrong.

And I believe Brett wanted to prove it to us.

Oh sure, the New York Post, New York Daily News and even the Wall Street Journal all said the same thing after a loss to San Diego-that Favre should have stayed retired.

But that's the "media elite" talking. And we know "Middle America" doesn't much care for them (at least that's what Fred Thompson and Fox News tells me). And Brett, being from Hattiesburg, Mississippi and as "Middle America" as they come, probably dismissed those criticisms as uniformed eruditeness.

But when the people say it, like you did in our poll, that's a different story. That's right, I'm saying YOU got into Brett's head and lit a fire under his behind.

Jets, please don't thank me.

And yes, I too said before the season started a Favre comeback was a bad idea and he would overstay his welcome.

Heck, even Robin said it on the air.

Well, Mr. Favre, your table is ready.

Although I'm afraid the crow is no longer on the menu as too many of us were forced to eat it.

I think Favre is a great competitor but, I think the media pays way too much attention to him. Favre is overrated and will most likely not make the playoffs. (You should keep this prediction in your bookmarks so you can reference it later. )

By the way, I think HeadlineNews should have its own hour long sports show with you as host. Tell the big guys I said it was OK. Thanks for the great and entertaining reports every morning.

Brett Farve is not the only Jets quaterback to throw for 6 touchdowns, another quarterback we might now "Broadway" Joe Namath also threw for 6 in one game.

with a pleasant disposition I wonder: "the winning of an American football game requires a team effort; yet the quarterback is often a salient player after a loss. Is this a definition for Monday morning quarterback?" – I Love the enchanting seraphim Robin and the Morning Express Team.

Have a pleasant Day, John

I have this wonderful image in my head that Brett just did the 2 point conversion to prove a further point to the Packers that they messed up. BIG TIME!
For some reason everyone during the debacle forgot he's an amazing player. He'll be throwing a bullet pass on his death bed.

To the person earlier who said Favre is overrated... did you just not read his stats from the game this weekend??? Really? Overrated?
T.O., Ocho Cinqo, there's some overrated players. Brett Favre not being there is why the Packers are not even going to get in the playoffs this year ( I'm a Packer fan too).

Yes, Brett is a great quarterback, But a good quarterback needs the team work to make it happen. I am a Green Bay fan, I always root for the team, not just one player.

I have lived in Wisconsin for 20 something years and have followed the packers and the media. Packer fans traditional have slammed any player who upsets them for any reason. Brett is no exception, 2 years ago when he had a poor season the mobs where yelling " get out of GB brett" and "Retire, you're over the hill" Last season was a good one by almost anyones standards in green bay. Brett was their hero. The game he played almost a week ago showed a bret who was making mistakes and a team not on the same page. The media and green bay slammed him. Yesterdays game show Brett still has what it takes to play. He played welll and it looks like he has the play book down.

Brett has many good years ahead of him and yes it is true it is a team effort not just one player. On another note GB's new QB arron will be raked thru the mud if he isn't able to play this sunday. This is just how things work in gb either your on top or they drag you thru the mud.

I think the Jet fans stick behind their team on both the good and bad days so Brett will be a team of grat true fans for many years to come. Yesterday is a sign of things to come.

Finally, the doubters might shut up!
As a recovering Packer fan in mourning, my heartbreak over Favre's retirement Is eased at last>

My wife and I have been Packer fans all of our lives and Brett Farve was the best thing that ever happened to the Packers and that is saying alot as there has been many many great players, We should have traded Ted Thompson to the Jets so he could wreck there team instead of ours. Rafer you are great, Thanks

Seth   September 29th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I think Brett needs to shave. He is a courageous player.

My son and I have been packer fans (our) whole lives. I still root for the home team but now I have a new team to pull for also. I dont know what I'll do if the pack and Jets ever play each other. But it sure is fun to say to my son, GO JETS.

Louie   October 1st, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Great job Brett!

My wife and I are Chargers fans, and we're almost sorry about the Monday Night Football game, but we supported your decision from the start. Keep the Hall of Fame stats coming!

mike hite   October 2nd, 2008 9:26 am ET

Faver, has got the game down like the back of his hand,he is a playmaker, big time playmaker and has brought tha jets better along with him then without.

Jay   October 2nd, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Dear Robin and Rafer,

I still think the soap opera bit you guys did on Farve was over the top !

"Brett is seeing another team".

I am still laughing about that. That is why I love Morning Express – you .

Also – Is it just me, or is one of Sara Palin's bangs glued to her eyelids ?

Jim   October 5th, 2008 10:36 am ET

You know, you said it on the money about the media elite. They are probly the biggest pains there are. Brett Favre has always been an awesome player and will always be an awesome player. He is still out there when a lot of these other qb's had to retire. And having fun to boot. The media always goes after someone and then it is almost like brainwashing. IF the media says it it has to be true. Well, guess what??? Brett Favre proved you all wrong and he will continue to prove you all wrong. Maybe they wont make it to the playoffs, but already they are looking ten times better than they have in twenty years. Keep it up Brett!!!!!

Robin   October 6th, 2008 9:29 am ET

I never questioned whether Brett could still play football at that high of level. However, I thought he should have remained retired as he could do so much good beyond football. I thought he would make a great example of their is "wonderful" life after football. I also believe the Green Bay Packers where ready to look toward the future. Brett was the "here and now," Aaron Rodgers is the future. I don't necessarily believe the Pack made the wrong choice.
