If you're lazy... blame your parents?

Posted: 10:28 AM ET

Writer Aimee

Who’s responsible if you’re an unmotivated couch potato? You’ve GOTTA hear about this new study we reported on the show today. It says… laziness could be in your genes!

Scientists at the University of North Carolina found genetic traits that influence activity levels. But, important to note, the study has only looked at mice so far… not humans.

Some of you have been sounding off about the story:

Brett from Texas sent in this email:

“A ‘laziness gene?’ My grandfather is over 70, still exercises, and has 4 sons who have little or no exercise each day. My sister and I also exercise, but my brother doesn't. It's a personal choice. Stating people have a ‘laziness gene’ just alleviates personal responsibility.”

So… what do you think? Could laziness really be linked to your ancestors, or it is ALL YOU?

Everything we are comes from our parents. Our hair and eye color, and yes, even our brains and the way we think. Assuming normal and healthy development, if being lazy makes sense to you, then yeah, there's a reason you think that way.

My parents were hard workers and we are too. No lazy bones in the Herzog family. Oh and by the way, the guy who sang the song you mentioned was none other than Frank Sinatra. Have a good day all.

I don't buy it for one second.... My husband and I are very busy, and for sure not lazy and have always went above and beyond in the work place and at home and it shows . Most of the older generation is the same way as well... My daughter (12) is very lazy and thinks she should be paid/rewarded for everything she does. We did not raise her this way ! My father was a hard worker and my mom was stay at home. Now I have two brothers and one of them is completely useless while the other is not and has several businesses. My husband came from a family of 10 and 1/3 of them are useless and don't work. Go figure. All the while his father worked his rear off and his mom was stay at home. Todays kids and there are alot of them are not into any labor of any sort and will not go out of their way to lift a finger. However, I have seen several that go the distance .. Wendi

Not a chance!! Someone just doesn't want to accept any responsibility for their own behavior if they want to blame laziness on their parents! How irresponsible can you get?!?!?

I have to throw the bull sh** flag on this one, Lets look at the studies that show we have more people that are fat now then in the past. It is not due to a gene, it is due to nothing more than people making the choice to be lazy and not getting off the lazy butts and get out and move a little.

I don't believe there is a "laziness gene". I would agree with Brett from Texas in regard to personal choice, but in addition, children usually follow whatever example is present in family life. It could be exercise, work ethic or even manners. Maybe people are looking for excuses.
